Chapter 5

Author: Golden Age
"What do you mean your feelings don't matter? You're the daughter I raised for 20 years. You're the apple of my eye!" Clara said.

The janitor who'd watched the whole thing looked at me with open pity.

I smiled at him.

Then, I unzipped my backpack and took out the documents I'd prepared ahead of time.

Without sparing them another glance, I turned and walked toward the doors of the hall.

Hugo took a few strides up the steps and grabbed my arm.

"Where do you think you're going?" he asked.

I looked at him calmly. "To get the papers done," I replied simply.

He thought I was making a scene.

"How can you do it if we don't go in? The papers need our signatures. It's too late either way. Why insist on going in?"

I didn't struggle. Instead, I just pulled my arm free and walked through the door.

Clara tugged him back. There was a trace of disdain in her voice. "Forget it. Leave her. She can't get it done without us anyway. She's just throwing a tantrum. Don't indulge that.

"She grew up in the countryside, so she never learned anything good. All she picked up was how to throw tantrums to get attention. She needs to learn how our family does things."

Hugo listened to her and stopped blocking me.

He just stood there, ready to watch me fail.

I stopped and turned to face them.

"Indulge me? When was I ever indulged?" I asked. "Did you indulge me all those years I suffered in Ivana's place?"

I looked at them. My voice wasn't loud, but every single word I spoke was clear.

I continued, "Is wanting to go home to my birth parents just a tantrum to you? Ivana can't bear to leave you, so she can keep stalling, and you just go along with it.

"But what about me? Do I not want my birth parents at all?"

Hugo and Clara froze.

They opened their mouths.

It seemed to be the first time they realized that all I wanted was to join their family properly.

Not sparing them another glance, I walked up to the counter and passed them the documents.

"Hi. I'm here to finalize my legal placement," I said.

The clerk took the file and flipped through it. Then, she asked the usual question, "Is the legal guardian here to sign? Both parties have to confirm in person."

I didn't answer her right away.

I looked back one last time at Hugo and Clara standing outside.

The clock in the hall ticked forward.

"It's 4:58 pm. They're about to close," I said calmly, looking at them. "I'll ask one last time. Are you still going to do the papers?"

With everyone watching, they hesitated.

That was when Ivana turned her head. Her shoulders trembled.

She sniffled and wiped her tears.

Clara froze in place.

She looked at Ivana, then at me.

The little doubt that'd just risen in her vanished at once.

"Vana's already crying like this…"

Clara sighed and looked away from me. She then changed her answer.

"Be good. We'll wait until next time."

I turned back without any surprise.

There was nothing left to say.

It was 4:59 pm.

Hurried footsteps sounded outside.

Victoria and Eugene rushed through the door and came straight to my side. They passed their IDs through the window.

"Sweetheart, we're here," Victoria said.

Turning to the clerk, she said, "List her under our legal guardianship."

Clara said, "Even after our real daughter suffered so much out there, and we'd only just brought her back, we never let you suffer the slightest grievance. We were afraid it'd upset you."And this is how you saw us? All that sweetness was just a lie?"Ivana rolled her eyes. "You were fools. Who else is there to blame?""Get out!" Hugo shouted, his anger exploding. "Get out! Get out of here right now! From now on, you're not our daughter anymore! I won't leave you a single dollar!"Ivana clenched her jaw and shot us a look full of hatred. Then, she turned and stumbled out.The front door stayed open, and the living room went quiet again.Only Hugo's heavy breathing and Clara's muffled sobs could be heard. After a while, Clara lifted her head and looked at me, her face full of tears."Yve… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry… We were fools. We didn't see that ingrate for what she was."Will you forgive me? Come home with us. From now on, you're our only daughter. We'll give you the best of

Ivana said, "I'll never go back to the Fitzroys again."Tears kept falling as she spoke. Before, Hugo and Clara would've rushed over to soothe her. This time, they only stood there.Hugo looked at her for a long time. Then, he said in a low voice, "Vana, maybe… maybe you should move out for a while."The air went still. Ivana froze. She looked at him in disbelief. "Dad?"Clara bit her lip. "Vana, stay in the other apartment for a while. Come back after Yvette cools off," she said.Ivana suddenly smiled. "I knew it. I was right."She slammed the gift box onto the floor. "You used to say over and over that I'd always be your daughter. Turns out, it was all a lie! Now that your real daughter is back, you're kicking me aside after all."Clara hurried to explain, "It's not like that. It's just for now—""For now?" Ivana said, cutting her off. "You're telling me to move out now. Are you going to give her my room, too? What about the shares and inheritance? Are you going to hand th

I didn't say anything. I just kept eating. The ribs were savory and a little sweet. The chicken soup was rich and hot. Every bite was warm.No one brought up Hugo or Clara at that meal. No one brought up Ivana either.Everyone steered around the people and things that'd ruin it for me.Hailey told me funny stories from college and complained that the cafeteria food was bad.Kate cut in now and then to ask me about my plans. She told me that if I ever needed any books, I could come to her anytime.Off to the side, Eugene sat with a smile, pouring tea and water for everyone.I sat between Victoria and him, listening to Hailey and Kate laugh. My stomach was full, and my heart felt at peace. The next morning, after I went home with them, my phone rang right after breakfast. One word lit up on the screen—"Dad."I stared at it but didn't answer. Once the call ended, I changed the contact name to "Hugo".The ringing had barely stopped for three seconds before it started again.T

I tightened my hold on Victoria's hand and calmly spoke to Hailey. "They didn't come. This is my aunt and her husband. But now they're my adoptive mom and dad."Hailey wasn't stupid. She remembered Clara's dismissive attitude over the phone. Then, she thought of the last three months.I'd gone to do the papers again and again, full of hope, only to come back disappointed each time. She understood at once. Her eyes went red.She closed the document and pulled me into a tight hug."Yve, thank God," she said. "I don't care whose legal family you're part of, as long as they treat you right. No one wants to go back to a family that plays favorites!"Kate sighed when she heard that and walked over to pat me gently on the shoulder. She then looked at Victoria and Eugene and asked a few simple questions."Is the paperwork all done? Did it go through in the system? They didn't make another scene, did they? They didn't give her a hard time?"Victoria looked at her with genuine gratitu

Water dripped onto the leather seats. Clara immediately started complaining from the back of the car."Yvette, why didn't you wipe off with a tissue before you got in? These seats are expensive. They're hard to clean once they're stained."Don't you have any manners? Look at Vana. She keeps herself so clean."Ivana was wrapped in the oversized coat, leaning against Clara. Her voice was soft and sweet."Mom, don't blame Yvette. She probably just hasn't ridden in a nice car before. She doesn't know what to do."Hugo snorted coldly and hit the gas. He drove us home.Back at the house, Clara bustled around making tea for Ivana, terrified she'd catch a cold.I went back to the cluttered guest room alone.Clara even made me wait to shower until Ivana was done. She said she was afraid there would not be enough hot water for her."What are you thinking about? You look like you're miles away." Victoria's voice pulled me out of the memory. She took the bottle from my hands. Then, she

"Fine. Fine! Yvette, you think you're all grown up now? If you insist on going with your aunt, then don't come back to this house!" Hugo shouted.Clara's eyes went red as she turned on me. She snapped, "Yvette, how can you hurt us like this? We're your birth parents!"I looked at them calmly."My heart was worn away in those nine waits. If you can't let Ivana go, then keep her and live your lives. As for me, I have a home now," I said.I didn't deal with the looks on their faces after that. I didn't even glance at Ivana, who was standing outside.Instead, I turned to Victoria and Eugene."Aunt Vicky, Uncle Eugene, let's go. Hailey and Ms. Warren are still waiting at the restaurant."Victoria nodded and took my hand."Let's go eat. We're celebrating you finally joining our family," she said. The three of us walked out of the office side by side.I didn't even spare Hugo and Clara a glance. The moment the car door shut, the noise outside was cut off.Eugene started the car an
