Cecilia waited until Damian set his phone facedown on the table before she spoke.

They had finished dinner nearly an hour ago, yet neither of them had made any move to leave the living room. Damian had poured himself a drink and settled into the armchair opposite her, his jacket discarded somewhere between dinner and the second call he’d taken from Victor. Cecilia had been half listening while scrolling through photographs Mrs. Everhart had sent from the Children’s Promise Dinner.

Damian didn’t move away.Neither did Serena. His arm was still beside hers, close enough that she could feel the warmth of him, and for one ridiculous second they simply stood there while rain hammered against the windows. Then Serena reached for the fork herself.“You’re in my way.”Damian stepped back. “Better?”“Much.”It wasn’t.She carried her plate to the small dining table and sat down. Damian joined her a minute later with his own food, choosing the chair across from hers rather than the one beside her.Probably wise. For a while, they ate without speaking. The silence wasn’t exactly uncomfortable. That might have been easier. Serena had spent too many nights eating with Damian for silence between them to feel unnatural.Sometimes they’d talked. Sometimes he’d worked while she ate. Sometimes she’d sat barefoot at his kitchen counter stealing food from his plate after insisting she wasn’t hungry. Her gaze dropped to her dinner. She wasn’t doing this tonight.“How was the car?”

By the time Serena brought the SN-R back into the garage, the rain had swallowed the far end of the test track. She killed the engine and pulled off her helmet as Luis approached the driver’s side. Beyond the open garage entrance, what had started as steady rain less than an hour ago had become a silver sheet, driven almost sideways by the wind.“That’s getting ugly,” Nina said from behind the telemetry station.Serena climbed out. “Good thing we’re done.”“You are,” Daniel said. “I still have two hours of data to sort through.”“That sounds like a personal problem.”Daniel gave her a look, and Serena smiled as she handed her helmet to Luis.It wasn’t until she glanced toward the glass observation room above the garage that she noticed Damian. He stood beside one of Street Nation’s senior engineers, his jacket off and his shirtsleeves rolled once at the wrists while the man spoke.Damian looked down at almost the same moment.Their eyes met.Neither of them smiled.Serena looked away

Natalie entered Damian’s office shortly after eleven carrying a package.“This was delivered for you.”Damian finished signing the document in front of him before looking up. “From whom?”“There wasn’t a name. It came by courier.”She crossed the room and placed it on the corner of his desk.Damian recognized the box immediately. His pen stopped between his fingers.Natalie waited, probably expecting some instruction, but Damian gave none. After a moment, she returned to the door.“I’ll let you know when Malcolm arrives.”The door closed behind her.Damian looked at the package. He had expected nothing from Serena after sending the music box. That had been deliberate. No card, no message, nothing that required acknowledgment. He had stayed away from her birthday because appearing there would have been another violation of the distance she had repeatedly asked him to respect. The gift had been different. At least, that was what he had told himself. He pulled the package toward him and

Serena knew something was wrong when Theo refused to tell her where they were going.“You’ve been trying to figure out where we’re going since we left,” Theo said as the elevator climbed.“Because you haven’t told me anything. You said we were having dinner, but this doesn’t feel like dinner anymore.”“We’re almost there.”Serena glanced at the changing floor numbers. “That still doesn’t tell me where we’re going.”Theo smiled but gave her nothing else. The elevator stopped before Serena could question him again, and the doors opened onto a private penthouse washed in warm light. The first thing she saw was her mother standing beneath an enormous arrangement of white and blush roses. Then everyone shouted.“Surprise!”Serena stopped dead as the penthouse erupted around her. Tessa was already laughing, Claire lifted a champagne glass, and Marjorie looked entirely too pleased with herself. People from Ellis Atelier crowded around friends Serena hadn’t expected to see tonight, while Dani

Damian remained behind his desk after Victor left. The office had gone quiet around him, the city beyond the windows beginning to brighten with evening lights as the last of the daylight disappeared between the buildings. You were afraid of her then.Damian leaned back in his chair and stared through the glass. He had spent most of his life making certain fear never had a meaningful place in his decisions. Fear distorted judgment. It made people careless, reactive, willing to surrender advantages simply to escape discomfort.Victor had been right anyway.Serena had terrified him.Not at first. At first, she had been exactly what they agreed she would be. Beautiful, intelligent, entertaining company without expectations neither of them had promised to meet. Their arrangement had rules, an expiration date and enough distance built into it that Damian had never considered it dangerous. Then, somewhere along the way, the rules had stopped containing anything.Serena began leaving earrings

Damian was halfway through reviewing a revised set of figures when Victor walked into his office without knocking. He looked up briefly. “You have an assistant.”“So do you. Neither of them has ever managed to keep me out of a room I intended to enter.”Damian returned his attention to the document. “What do you want?”Victor crossed the office and placed a folder on the desk. “The Arden revisions. Their legal team accepted most of Malcolm’s changes. There are two points they want reconsidered before Friday.”Damian opened the folder and scanned the marked pages. The first amendment was reasonable. The second wasn’t.“No.”“I assumed you’d say that.”“Then why are you here?”“Because assuming what you’ll say and obtaining an answer are generally considered different things.”Damian gave him a look, but Victor merely took the chair opposite him.For several minutes, they discussed the revisions. Damian rejected one, altered another and instructed Victor to have Malcolm prepare the resp
