Chapter 3

Author: Chelsea
His tone softened considerably, offering a few words of genuine concern.

"Let me know as soon as it's finished. I'll come pick you up tonight."

Though my heart was still aching over my father's destroyed legacy, I managed a quiet reply into the receiver.

He then added, "Scarlett is coming over tonight. She wants to apologize to you."

I squeezed my phone. "Do not let her show her face anywhere near me today."

A brief silence hung on the other end of the line.

"Fine."

At twelve-forty in the afternoon, as our car glided down the winding coastal highway, the driver suddenly glanced into the rearview mirror.

"The car behind us has been tailing us for a while."

I turned around to look through the rear window and spotted a sleek silver-gray sports car glued to our back bumper.

It was Scarlett.

She began aggressively flashing her high beams, signaling for us to pull over.

I motioned for the driver to ignore her, but in the next second, she swerved directly into our rear end. The heavy collision jolted the entire vehicle violently, and I spun around in sheer shock and fury.

"Has she completely lost her mind?!"

The driver slammed the gas to pull away, but Scarlett accelerated and rammed into us a second time. The force was even harder, and it nearly sent our car scraping directly against the steel guardrails.

Inside the trunk, the specialized security briefcase snapped off its mounting rack and crashed brutally against the interior wall. Forced to a halt on the shoulder, the driver hit the brakes, and I immediately threw my door open and sprinted to the back.

My heart sank as I popped the trunk and opened the case. The hardware authenticator inside was cracked straight through, its power display light completely dead.

The driver hastily reconnected the wiring and tried several times to restart it, but there was no response.

I was left utterly speechless. The final deadline for the signing was less than an hour away.

Scarlett stepped out of her car behind us.

"Eliana!" she called out, rushing over with frantic steps.

My voice trembled with a rage so deep it barely sounded like my own. "What on earth do you want?!"

Scarlett squeezed out a few tears, her voice breathy and frantic. "You refused to forgive me and wouldn't even see me! I didn't know what else to do!"

Then, switching into a clumsy, theatrical routine of repentance, she sobbed, "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have gone into your father's archive room that night."

I had no patience for her pathetic performance. Turning straight to the head bodyguard, I commanded, "Report this incident to the High Council immediately. Have the family elders handle it."

Her fake weeping instantly cut off. "Report it to the High Council? You can't report this to the elders!"

Scarlett's face went ghastly white.

"The five families' joint summit starts tomorrow. If the elders find out I attacked the donna's vehicle over a personal grievance, they'll strip me of my representative seat!"

Rage burned through my veins. "That's your problem!"

In a panic, she reached over to grab the damaged security case. "I'll pay for it! I'll get someone to fix it right now!"

"Don't touch it!"

She ignored me and reached in anyway, snagging her wrist against a jagged edge of the broken metal casing. Blood welled up instantly, spilling over her arm.

When Dario pulled up to the scene moments later, his eyes landed on me first.

"Did you hit your head? Are you feeling nauseous?"

A lump formed in my throat, and tears threatened to spill. But before I could speak, Scarlett whimpered from behind him.

"Dario..."

He turned around. The moment he saw the blood staining her wrist, he instantly pulled off his suit jacket and pressed it firmly against her wound.

The family security detail gathered around, asking if they should submit the dashcam footage to the Council.

"Submit it," I ordered immediately, only for Dario to stop me.

I stared at him in utter disbelief. "She rammed my car twice on purpose."

"If that footage gets sent out, the Council will find out everything."

Scarlett looked terrified.

"I just wanted her to pull over. I didn't mean to destroy her project!"

Dario turned to me. "Can the authentication still make the deadline?"

With tears brimming in my eyes, I shook my head in utter defeat.

"I'll secure you a new shipping route," he promised softly.

A bitter, humorless laugh burst from me. "I've spent two full years negotiating the San Luca Port. You think you can just hand me a replacement?"

"I'll hand over the next legal route at the South Port to you directly."

"I want San Luca!"

"It's gone, Eliana!"

His words ignited the last spark of fury in me. "You know it's gone, yet you're still standing here protecting the perpetrator who ruined it?"

Before Dario could reply, Scarlett suddenly doubled over, dry-heaving by the side of the road.

The private physician rushed over and quickly examined her, suspecting a mild concussion and urging that she be transported to the clinic immediately.

Dario stood silent for a long moment. "We'll discuss this later. I need to get her checked out first."

My eyes burned with anger, and tears streamed uncontrollably down my face. "What about my project?"

"I will handle it."

"The Port Commission only waits until two o'clock."

"The hardware is broken, Eliana. Standing here isn't going to fix it."

I stared at him, unwilling to yield. "I'm still going to the commission. It's my responsibility."

Dario didn't stop me. Reaching out, he gently wiped away my last tear with his thumb, then turned and walked away. Once again, I was left standing alone.

By two o'clock in the afternoon, I arrived at the Port Commission offices. The authentication window had already been closed, and the lucrative San Luca seat was officially awarded to a rival family that very afternoon.

Two years of relentless hard work, gone in an instant.

That evening, my phone chimed with a text from Dario.

[Come home. The lawyers are already here.]

The moment I stepped out of the harbor, Scarlett blocked my path. She looked shockingly gaunt, her clothes hanging loosely on her frame."Eliana, give me five minutes."I came to a stop. She reached into her coat and pulled out a small box, opening it to reveal the brass nameplate that had fallen off my father's model ship."They found it while restoring the vessel. I never dared to give it to you until now."When I didn't reach out for it, Scarlett's eyes quickly welled up with tears."Dario hasn't seen me in six months. I was removed from the core operational team, and the other four families refuse to let me participate in formal negotiations ever again."My expression remained calm. "None of that has anything to do with me.""I know." She lowered her head, taking a long moment to compose herself before speaking. "I admit it. I fired that shot on purpose."I wasn't surprised. "I know."Scarlett lifted her tear-streaked face.I looked her dead in the eye. "Your marksmanshi

Over the following days, he managed the family's business remotely while trying every possible way to get me to sit down and talk with him.Every day, gifts arrived for me ranging from exquisite, rare Ecuadorian roses to priceless handcrafted art pieces. Later on, I began receiving small trinkets and toys I had loved as a child, a continuous stream that went on for an entire month.Eventually, I officially secured a legal shipping partnership route running from Quebec to Northern Europe. On the day of the contract signing, the partner hosted a celebratory dinner. As I stepped out of the hotel, I spotted Dario once again. He stood at the back of the crowd, waiting until everyone else had dispersed before walking over."Congratulations."I gave a nod. "Thank you."He handed me a large envelope.Inside lay the permanent title deeds to the old shipyard, the ownership certificates for all of my father's private archives, and an official statement of liability issued by the Falcone fa

By now, I had successfully finalized an independent shipping contract at a small harbor in Quebec. When I stepped out of the office, snow was falling softly, and a black sedan was parked along the curb.Dario was standing by the vehicle. He had grown noticeably thinner, wearing only a leather jacket, without a bodyguard in sight. He looked starkly different from the solemn, imposing Don he usually was.The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. "Eliana."I came to a stop, my face composed."How did you find me?"His dry, cracked lips curved into a sudden smile—a look of relief at finally finding me."It took me two months," he rasped, swallowing hard before continuing. "You switched ports three times and used your father's old connections. I almost thought you had completely vanished."I said nothing.Dario reached into the car and pulled out a wooden box. When he opened the lid, inside lay the scale model ship Scarlett had shot through. The snapped keel had been pieced back toget

There were no cameras inside the east wing archive room itself, but the hallway camera had captured everything. At 5.42 a.m., Scarlett had walked out of the room. There wasn't a single trace of panic on her face, and her steps were calm and steady.Dario stared at the screen, all color draining from his face.Mike placed the estate's security log for that night onto the desk. "Before and after the gunshot, no strangers entered the east wing, and none of the perimeter alarms were triggered."Dario remained completely silent. Sitting across from him, Scarlett's eyes slowly welled up with tears. "I've already explained this to you, Dario. My apartment was targeted that night, and my nerves were completely shot."Dario lifted his eyes to meet hers. "You've been with me for eight years. You can hit a moving target from twenty meters away. That ship model was less than three meters away from you. Are you honestly telling me your shot strayed by accident?"Scarlett's face stiffened. "

"We're over?"He repeated the words in a low murmur, his fingers tightening around the slip of paper."Since when does she decide when we’re over?"He quickly dialed my number, only to hear the automated voice of an operator informing him that the line had been disconnected. The color finally drained from Dario's face. He immediately called his underboss, Mike."Go to the West Port shipyard, and bring Eliana back."Half an hour later, Mike called back, his tone nervous. "Don, the donna isn't here. The captain said she boarded a cargo vessel before dawn."Dario snapped upright. "Where did she go? Which route?""It wasn't a ship under Falcone's name. The vessel exited Sicilian-controlled waters last night, and its port of destination was altered at the last minute."A deadly silence settled over the living room."Find her," Dario commanded, his voice dropping into a chilling register. "Check the airports, the harbors, and every network in the family. Bring her back to me."Mik

Two documents lay flat on the mahogany table. Dario didn't bother beating around the bush."Sign them."I flipped through the pages. The moment my signature went on those lines, the accident would be officially classified as a minor rear-end collision. The family elders would never learn that Scarlett had intentionally ambushed the donna's car, allowing her to retain her seat as an official representative at the Five Families Summit.I slid the papers back across the table. "I'm not signing."Scarlett's eyes instantly welled up with tears as she stared at me. "Eliana, I know I ruined San Luca. But I've waited eight years for that seat! If word of this reaches the elders, they will never let me step inside that conference room again."Dario spoke up, too. "San Luca is already lost. Ruining the seat she spent eight years waiting for won't bring your project back. Besides, I will compensate you. South Port's shipping routes, two main warehouses, and a fully legitimate logistics fir
