Chapter 2

Author: Autumn Leaf
The ramen suddenly tasted stale, and it made me nauseous.

I dumped them into the trash and cooked myself a proper four-course dinner with soup.

From now on, I wanted to take better care of myself too.

By the time Gina came home, it was almost midnight.

Mike was supporting a half-drunk Gina as they walked through the door.

"Perry, Ms. Harlington had a little too much to drink tonight. Please take good care of her."

I reached out for Gina, but she pushed my hand away.

"Go away!"

She turned to face Mike and winked at him flirtatiously. "Mike, have a few more drinks with me."

Mike leaned close and whispered into her ear. "Ms. Harlington, don't rush. I'll have another drink with you tomorrow."

His breath brushed against her ear. She leaned weakly against him.

Her ears were one of her most sensitive spots, and Mike knew exactly how to take advantage of that.

The sight in front of me made my heart ache.

I pulled Gina away from him.

"Mike, you can leave now."

I wrapped an arm around Gina. Her familiar scent made my head spin.

After helping her onto the bed, I looked at her flushed, alluring face from the alcohol.

I lost control and kissed her.

Gina instinctively kissed me back, but then she suddenly opened her eyes. When she realized it was me, she shoved me away.

She seemed to sober up a little, and her expression changed. "What are you doing? I don't feel well today."

With that, she pushed herself up and went into the bathroom.

I sank onto the bed and felt totally numb after Gina shut me down like that.

Ever since Mike became Gina's secretary, she had refused to get close to me.

By the time Gina came out of the shower, most of the alcohol had worn off.

She glanced at the dishes on the table before smiling sarcastically.

"Well, look at you. You made yourself such a nice dinner. I was worried you hadn't eaten, so I brought you some food. Guess I was worried for nothing."

She glanced at a crumpled plastic bag by the door after saying that.

I had assumed it was just a bag of trash she had forgotten to throw away.

When I opened it, I found some cold shrimp and crab inside.

I was allergic to seafood, and I had never eaten these things before.

Gina became impatient when she saw me frown.

"I brought you food out of kindness. Why are you making that face?"

I clenched my fist and said coldly, "I'm allergic to seafood."

Gina glanced at the food in the bag, and an odd expression appeared on her face. She quickly explained, "Mike likes seafood, so that's what we ordered tonight.

"You've already eaten anyway. If you don't want it, just throw it away."

I recalled the time I had accompanied Gina to a business dinner and accidentally eaten a dish containing shrimp.

My entire body became swollen, and I went into shock.

Gina had been furious. She had chewed out the client and specifically instructed everyone around her never to order seafood whenever I was eating with them.

She had once loved me with all her heart, but now, someone else had become the person she cared about.

Gina ignored me and closed the bedroom door. She shut me out.

We had made it through the seven-year itch together, but I never expected our marriage to fall apart at the ten-year mark.

Staring at the closed bedroom door, I fell deep into thought.

Gina and I had been college classmates. We fell in love at first sight at our college's orientation party.

Even back then, Gina had already shown an exceptional talent for business.

While everyone else was busy playing video games and out shopping, she had already started her own business on campus with her sharp business instincts.

By the time we graduated, everyone else was struggling to find a job.

Gina had already founded her own company.

I admired her ambition and supported her quietly from the sidelines.

One day, she complained to me about how difficult it was for a woman to build a career on her own and how she constantly ran into one problem after another.

Without hesitation, I quit my promising job and returned to help her.

I never wanted money or recognition. All I wanted was for her to achieve her dream.

Gina's lips moved a little, but in the end, she said nothing. The moment I boarded the plane, I finally said goodbye to the city where I had wasted ten years of my life. I might never come back. After returning to the company, I felt years younger.Everyone joked that I'd secretly gotten plastic surgery.I raised the thermos in my hand and pointed to the lemon slices floating inside."Maybe lemon detox really works."Eve covered her mouth and giggled. She was the one who had given me the lemons."Mr. Camelot, you're not getting any younger. You need to start taking better care of yourself."Thinking about what she'd said, I realized she was right. I really did need to take better care of myself. Before leaving work, I messaged Eve and asked her out to dinner. She replied with a cute sticker.[Sure!]The sense of freedom I'd been missing for so long made the dinner especially relaxing. After the meal, we took a walk together along the street.Eve asked with a playful smile

Sensing that I was hinting at something else, Gina finally gave up.Tears glistened in her eyes, and her voice trembled despite her efforts to hold it steady."I've been so tired all these years. I never dared to stop, not even for a moment. I was afraid of getting old. I was afraid of dying."Then Mike came along and made me feel young again. He knows how to make me happy, so I always wanted to be around him. But I never had real feelings for him. You were always the one I truly loved."I listened to Gina's tearful confession without feeling any emotion whatsoever.People always seemed to learn how to cherish something only after they'd lost it.What good did that do now?I said calmly with a blank expression, "Gina, our story is over. Let's part on good terms. Don't make this any uglier than it needs to be."After a long silence, Gina finally wiped the tears from her face and said one word with difficulty, "Okay."When I finally heard her agree to the divorce, I let out a si

I pushed Gina's hand away and shouted, "How many times do I have to say it before you'll leave me alone? Don't you understand plain English?"I want a divorce!"Can you understand that now?"I never expected Gina to disregard my dignity so completely that she would come to Liam's company and demand that he hand me over. She had never respected me. She had never even seen me as an independent person. For years, I had indulged and spoiled her, and it had made her believe she was my master. The thought itself was hilarious. My shouting left Gina stunned. Her cheeks immediately turned red.She lowered her gaze and said softly, "Perry, I was wrong. Please don't divorce me.""No. The way you're acting now is making me sick of you. Please leave. Don't interfere with my work."I rejected her without hesitation. After everything she'd done, what right did she have to ask me for forgiveness?Seeing this, Liam also decided it was time to end the conversation."Show her out."Gina ha

Eve laughed at what I said and promised that she would give it her all. After seeing Eve off, I happened to come across another post from Mike.[Gina's the best boss ever! Not only did she bring me along on this trip, but she also bought me a ton of stuff. I wouldn't mind working for her forever.]There were two photos that showed two plane tickets for the trip home and a pile of luxury shopping bags.Gina commented under the post.[Who's to blame when you're such a good boy? Of course I have to spoil you. You're totally unlike someone else who does nothing but make me angry. He's not worth it.]I liked the post and closed the app.Gina should find out soon enough that I had left. The next morning, I was jolted awake by a call from Gina."Perry, I've been away from home for a few days. Where have you been?"Her tone was as pushy as ever, but I caught a hint of panic in it."You thought I'd fall apart without you, didn't you? Well, let me tell you something. Not only am I doi

She was silent for a moment before speaking dismissively. "Perry, don't be so childish. Do you really think threatening me with divorce is going to accomplish anything? Who's going to want you after you leave me? You're a middle-aged man who is practically at the bottom of the social ladder."I smiled calmly. "Don't worry about that."Even now, Gina still thought I was joking.I was barely in my thirties, yet in her eyes, I was already no different from some old man waiting to retire. All these years, my entire life had revolved around her, so she assumed I couldn't survive without her.It was truly ridiculous. After becoming a bachelor again, I felt an exhilarating sense of freedom I hadn't experienced in years.I went to the mall and bought myself some new clothes. I also signed up for a gym membership near my new place. It felt like I was starting my life over, and I decided that this time, I would take good care of myself. When I returned to the office, Liam looked at me w

"Perry, it seems like you've learned some new tricks. When threatening me with your resignation didn't work, you started threatening me with divorce."Fine. Whoever refuses to get divorced is a loser anyway."With that, Gina stormed off.I let out a long sigh. It really was time to end this.I packed my bags as quickly as possible and booked the earliest flight to leave this place.I headed to Jerome City, where Liam was based. Before boarding the plane, I sent the divorce agreement to Gina and switched off my phone. When I got off the plane, Liam was already waiting for me at the airport."Hey buddy, it's been years. You look a lot more worn out than I expected."Seeing how sharp and energetic Liam seemed in his expensive suit, I couldn't help but feel a little ashamed of myself.Money really did seem to make the man. We were the same age, yet Liam looked years younger than me.I shook my head and let out a sigh.Liam patted me on the shoulder. "What's done is done. From n
