He wanted to kiss her again, properly this time, but the hospital setting and her current state held him back. Instead, he brought her hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles. "Rest now. I'll be right here when you wake up."

Ericka's eyes fluttered closed. "Promise?"

"Promise." He settled back in the uncomfortable plastic chair, still holding her hand. "I'm not going anywhere."

As her breathing evened out into the steady rhythm of sleep, Dominic watched her face. The harsh overhead lights cast shadows beneath her eyes, highlighting the exhaustion etched into her features. Had he done this to her? His chest tightened at the thought.

His phone vibrated in his pocket. A text from his advisor: Where are you? The meeting started 15 minutes ago.

Dominic typed a quick reply without taking his eyes off Ericka: Family emergency. Need to reschedule.

It wasn't exactly a lie. Over the past three years, Ericka had become his family in all the ways that mattered. The thought of losing her, of coming home to an empty apartment with no sticky notes, no off-key singing in the shower, no shared meals, made his stomach clench painfully.

A doctor pulled back the curtain, clipboard in hand. She spoke in hushed tones, explaining that Ericka's blood pressure had dropped dangerously low due to dehydration and exhaustion. She'd need to take it easy for at least a week.

"Are you the boyfriend?" the doctor asked, eyes flicking between them.

The question caught Dominic off guard. "I'm her..." he hesitated, then straightened his shoulders. "Yes. I'm her boyfriend."

The word felt right on his tongue. Natural. As if he'd been saying it for years instead of seconds.

The doctor nodded, giving him discharge instructions and a prescription for iron supplements. Dominic listened carefully, committing every detail to memory. He wouldn't let Ericka down again.

Hours passed as he sat beside her bed. He answered emails one-handed, never letting go of her fingers. Nurses came and went, checking vitals, adjusting the IV. Through it all, Ericka slept, her face gradually regaining some of its colour.

When she finally stirred, the afternoon sun was streaming through the small window, painting golden rectangles across the hospital blanket.

"Hey," she murmured, voice thick with sleep. "You're still here."

Dominic squeezed her hand gently. "I told you I would be."

She blinked, taking in her surroundings. "What time is it?"

"Almost four."

"Your advisor meeting..."

"Rescheduled," he said firmly. "You're more important."

The smile that spread across her face was worth every missed meeting, every class he'd have to make up. Dominic helped her sit up, adjusting the pillows behind her back.

"The doctor says you can go home soon," he told her. "But you need to rest for a few days. No classes, no late nights studying."

Ericka grimaced. "My Victorian Lit paper is due Friday."

"I'll email your professor. Explain the situation."

"You don't have to take care of me," she protested, but the words lacked conviction.

Dominic brushed a strand of hair from his face, "I want to take care of you," he said softly. "Let me. Please."

Ericka studied his face for a long moment, searching for something. Whatever she found there seemed to satisfy her, because she nodded slowly. "Okay. But I'm warning you, I'm a terrible patient. I get grumpy when I'm stuck in bed."

"I've seen you during finals week. I think I can handle it."

She laughed, a weak sound but genuine, and Dominic felt something warm bloom in his chest. He'd missed that laugh, even though it had only been a day without it.

The discharge process took another hour, including paperwork, final checks, and pharmacy pickup for the iron supplements. Dominic handled most of it while Ericka sat in a wheelchair, despite hospital policy, despite her protests that she could walk just fine.

"This is ridiculous," she muttered as he wheeled her toward the exit. "I fainted once. I'm not an invalid."

"Humour me." He paused at the automatic doors, the late afternoon sunlight warm on their faces. "The car's just over there. Think you can make it?"

Ericka rolled her eyes but accepted his help standing. She was steadier on her feet now, the IV fluids having done their work, but she still leaned into him as they walked. Dominic wrapped his arm around her waist, telling himself it was purely for support.

The drive home was quiet. Ericka dozed against the window, her breath fogging small circles on the glass. Dominic kept glancing at her, reassuring himself she was still there, still breathing, still his.

When they pulled into the apartment complex parking lot, Ericka stirred. She looked up at the building, and Dominic saw something complicated cross her face.

"Having second thoughts?" he asked, trying to keep his voice light.

"No." She turned to look at him. "I'm just... this morning I thought I'd never see this place again. I'd already said goodbye in my head."

The admission made his throat tight. "I'm glad you didn't get the chance to leave."

"Are you?" There was a hint of vulnerability in her voice, a need for reassurance that cut him to the quick.

Instead of answering with words, Dominic reached across the console and cupped her face in his hands. Gently, giving her every opportunity to pull away, he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers.

This kiss was different from last night's. There was no desperation in it, no years of suppressed longing bursting free all at once. It was soft and sweet and full of promise. When he pulled back, Ericka's eyes were bright with unshed tears.

"Does that answer your question?" he murmured against her lips.

Both men groaned, but their protests lacked conviction. Ericka knew them too well."Fine," Maxwell conceded. "But I'm making popcorn, and I get the recliner.""Deal," Ericka smiled triumphantly. As Maxwell cleared the breakfast plates, Dominic helped Ericka to her feet. She swayed slightly, still weaker than she wanted to admit. Without hesitation, he scooped her up in his arms again."What are you doing?" she protested, though her arms automatically wound around his neck."Taking you to the couch. Doctor's orders." He carried her to the living room, settling her gently onto the sofa and tucking the throw blanket around her legs. "Comfortable?""I could get used to this," she admitted, snuggling into the cushions."Good. Because I plan on spoiling you for the foreseeable future."From the kitchen, Maxwell made exaggerated gagging noises. "I changed my mind. Horror movies. At least then I'd have an excuse for feeling nauseous."

Back at the apartment, Maxwell emerged from the bathroom, hair damp and clothes changed. He paused in the doorway, observing his sister and best friend at the kitchen table. The way they sat, Ericka leaning slightly into Dominic's space, his hand resting casually on her knee, spoke of an intimacy that had always been there, just beneath the surface. It was strange to see it so openly displayed after years of watching them dance around each other.A part of him wanted to be annoyed. This would complicate things, change the dynamic between the three of them. But the larger part, the part that had watched his sister cry over this man, the part that had listened to Dominic's circular reasoning about why he couldn't act on his feelings, felt only relief."So," he said, dropping into the chair across from them. "What's the plan for today? Because I drove four hours to make sure my sister wasn't dying, and now I'm stuck here until at least tomorrow."Ericka rolled her

"Oh God." Dominic buried his face in his free hand.“Well, your mother isn’t much better,” Erick said, “after all, our mothers are friends and well, when we went Christmas shopping, she joined us about ten minutes in to see how things were going.” She paused again, “She kept offering to buy me clothes and other items to get you to wake up. The shopping bags are still in the corner. I still have to unpack them.”Dominic's head snapped up, his eyes darting to the corner of the living room where, sure enough, several shopping bags sat tucked behind the armchair. He'd walked past them a dozen times without registering what they were."My mother bought you clothes to... seduce me?""She didn't use that word exactly," Ericka said, her cheeks flushing. "She said something about 'helping you see what's right in front of you.' There's this blue dress she insisted would 'bring out my eyes.'"Maxwell was laughing so h

"And I looked at you, really looked at you, and I thought, 'That's us. That's exactly what we've been doing.' Three years of pretending, of making excuses, of hiding behind that contract." He shook his head. "Something just... snapped. I couldn't do it anymore. I had to know what it would feel like to kiss you, even if it ruined everything.""It didn't ruin everything," she said softly."It almost did. If you hadn't collapsed, if Marcus hadn't texted me..." He couldn't finish the thought. "You would have been gone. I would have come home to an empty room and a cancelled lease, and I never would have known..."Ericka reached up, pressing her fingers to his lips. "But that's not what happened. I'm here. We're here."He kissed her fingers, then captured her hand in his. "Promise me something.""What?""Promise me you'll never disappear like that again. If something's wrong, if you're hurting, tell me. Even if you think I'm the one who caused it. Especially then.""I promise." She shifted

"I didn't exactly plan it," she mumbled, leaning into his touch despite her protest. Her gaze drifted to Dominic, who stood awkwardly by the couch, hands shoved in his pockets. "Did you two...?""Have a chat?" Maxwell finished. "Yeah, we did."Dominic watched the siblings, noting the familiar way they communicated, half-sentences, meaningful glances, the shorthand of people who'd grown up together. He'd always envied that, being an only child himself."And?" Ericka pressed, folding her arms across her chest. The sleeves of Dominic's hoodie fell past her fingertips, making her look smaller, more vulnerable.Maxwell glanced back at Dominic, one eyebrow raised. "And we've reached an understanding.""What kind of understanding?" Suspicion laced her tone."The kind where I don't murder your roommate for being an idiot," Maxwell said, his voice lighter than his words. "Though the jury's still out on that one."Dominic cleared his throat. "I was just explaining to your brother about... us."

"Shit," he whispered. He glanced at the clock: 6:47 AM. Trust Maxwell to arrive early. Carefully, Dominic extricated himself from Ericka's embrace, replacing his chest with her pillow. She murmured in protest but didn't wake.He ran a hand through his sleep-mussed hair and pulled on a t-shirt. There was no time to shower or even brush his teeth. Maxwell wasn't known for his patience, especially when it came to his sister.Dominic padded through the apartment, his mind racing. What would he say? How could he explain that yes, he'd kissed Ericka, then pushed her away, then found her in the hospital, and now they were... what? Together? It sounded ridiculous even to him.He opened the door to find Maxwell, six feet of barely contained fraternal concern, his dark hair, the same shade as Ericka's, dishevelled from the drive. A duffel bag hung from his shoulder, suggesting he planned to stay."Where is she?" Maxwell demanded, pushing past Dominic into the apartment."Sleeping," Dominic repl

Ericka's expression softened. "Yours," she whispered. His bedroom was messier than he would have liked, clothes draped over the desk chair, textbooks stacked haphazardly on the nightstand, the bed only half-made from his restless night. But Ericka didn't seem to notice or care as he lay her gently

She nodded, a watery smile spreading across her face. "Take me home, Dominic."They made their way upstairs slowly, Ericka leaning on him more heavily as the exertion caught up with her. Inside the apartment, everything looked the same as it had that morning, the yellow sticky note still on the fri
