Chapter 2

Author: Going Round
When I opened my eyes again, I was lying on a hospital bed.

My chest was covered in thick bandages, and even the slightest movement sent a sharp pain shooting through my body.

This was Zachary's doing.

After I fell, he took advantage of the chaos and drove the dagger straight into my chest. He'd never intended to let me live.

"Mr. Fuller is awake, Ms. Quinton!"

A nurse's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. Moments later, Wendy hurried into the room. When she saw me lying in bed, her lips parted, but she couldn't utter a word.

As I stared at her side profile, I lost myself in thought for a moment. When she was quiet, she really did look like my first love, Zara Langston.

Five years ago, Zara had thrown herself into harm's way to save me from being hit by a runaway truck. As a result, she ended up losing her life.

Countless nights, I'd wondered what could've happened if she hadn't saved me that day. If she were still alive, perhaps I wouldn't be stuck in this fake engagement, forced to endure Wendy's sickening betrayals.

After a short while, Wendy finally broke the silence.

"You should consider yourself lucky. The dagger missed your heart by three inches—"

I cut her off with a cold laugh. "Stop lying to yourself, Wendy. You know perfectly well that Zachary was the one who stabbed me!"

Not willing to meet my gaze, she argued, "You brought this upon yourself by insulting my grandfather and me! Zachary acted in the heat of the moment. You're completely fine now, so don't even think about pinning the blame on him."

She walked over to my bed and looked down at me condescendingly.

"I don't mind postponing the marriage registration by a few days, but you and I are getting married no matter what."

I quietly scanned my surroundings and didn't respond.

This was the same hospital Edward had stayed in after his condition worsened. Even if I had no intention of marrying Wendy, I still needed to show her the truth.

Zachary had killed her beloved grandfather. They insisted on being together even though he'd killed her father. In that case, I'd wanted to see just how strong their love really was.

"Have you visited your grandpa yet?" I asked.

Wendy froze. Before she could answer, Zachary walked in.

"What kind of lies are you trying to spin now, Colin?" he sneered. "Wendy just video-called Edward this morning. He's doing perfectly fine. Spare me your fake concern."

My heart sank. Edward had stopped breathing a week ago.

I'd already uncovered the truth three days earlier.

Initially, Edward had only been hospitalized for high blood pressure. But Zachary had bribed the surgeon to deliberately induce a stroke during surgery, leaving Edward in a vegetative state. Then, in the middle of the night, he'd pulled the plug on Edward's ventilator himself.

"We have no reason to lie to you. I even recorded the call." Wendy pulled out her phone impatiently.

On the screen, Edward looked as cheerful as usual. In a warm voice, he said, "Once you're married to Colin, make sure you build a happy life together. That way, I'll finally be able to rest easy."

Everyone else might've believed the video. But with my computer science background, I immediately noticed something was wrong.

The video Wendy had just shown me wasn't real. It had been digitally generated.

Zachary knew Wendy all too well. On top of that, he was very familiar with Edward's usual tone and mannerisms, which had allowed him to fool her completely.

I set the phone down on the table. "If I remember correctly, Edward is staying at this very hospital. If you had the time to video-call him, why didn't you just visit him in person?"

"The doctors told us Grandpa is in a critical stage of recovery and can't have any visitors," Wendy replied, her eyes darting around nervously. "Besides, he said we could visit him after we've registered our marriage!"

I knew exactly what Zachary was doing. He'd already figured out that Wendy and I would never make it to the registration office. That was the only reason he dared to make Edward say those words in the "video call".

"You're his granddaughter. If anyone should be allowed to visit him, it should be you," I told her.

Then, I pressed on. "You haven't seen him in almost two months. Even if they won't let you into his hospital room, you can still look at him from the doorway."

"Don't listen to him, Wendy," Zachary snapped before Wendy could respond. "Your grandpa is being treated by the most renowned specialist in the country. Colin's just trying to stir up trouble because he doesn't want to marry you!"

"I'm stirring up trouble?" I scoffed.

I turned to Wendy. "Go to his room right now. If Edward is willing to see you, I'll go to the city hall with you immediately."

Wendy looked torn. She tugged at Zachary's sleeve and lowered her voice.

"I really miss Grandpa, too. Could… Could we at least go and sneak a glance at him from the doorway?"

Zachary let out an exaggerated sigh. "I was trying to spare you the truth. Fine then. You'll have to find out eventually."

Wendy hesitantly followed him toward the door.

Just before he shut the door behind him, Zachary turned around and flashed me a taunting smile.

I felt slightly uneasy.

Less than ten minutes later, the door to my hospital room flew open. Wendy stormed inside, her face flushed with rage.

"Colin! Why did you transfer Grandpa to another hospital? There's no one in the intensive care unit!" she roared. "You're so desperate to get out of marrying me that you won't even leave my sick grandfather alone? You're despicable!"

When I received the news that Zachary had been sentenced to life in prison, I was sitting beside Zara's grave, laying down a bouquet of her favorite peonies.I'd stopped caring about what happened to Zachary ages ago. I'd only put up with Wendy and her little charade for so long because of Zara. Before she died, she'd clutched my hand weakly and said, "I gave my life to save you, Colin. For my sake, please make the most of the life you've been given. I won't be around for much longer. You shouldn't spend the rest of your life being trapped in the past."Zara and I had both grown up in a small town in the south. Neither of our families had much money, but I'd always done well in school. After I placed first on the city's high school entrance exam, Edward, who was visiting the area, noticed me and offered to sponsor my education. She'd blush whenever she looked at me, but she'd never once admitted that she liked me. Still, I'd promised her that once I was successful, I'd stay by her

"I can't believe you're asking me that." I let out a cold scoff. "Have you forgotten? The Shaw family and the Quinton family used to be business rivals."I continued, "When you were six, your family stole the Shaw family's biggest project. The loss drove their company into bankruptcy. Then, his parents abandoned him and fled overseas to escape their debts. You think he'd love you after what happened? If anything, he hates you!"He hates your family for destroying his. That's why he wants to destroy yours in return and find a way to take over your company. "Fortunately for him, you just happen to be a lovesick fool. He keeps telling you he loves you and wants to marry you, but he really just thinks you're easy to manipulate. All he has to do is sweet-talk you into handing everything over, and everything the Quinton family has ever owned will be his."I watched the color drain from Wendy's face and added cruelly, "Honestly, he doesn't even need to marry you. All he'd have to do is a

Philip didn't waste any time. As soon as he entered the room, he told us everything Zachary had made him do. By the time he was done, Wendy was trembling from head to toe."No… It can't be…" she murmured. "Zachary loves me so much. Why would he hurt Grandpa?""Dr. Lawson has presented you with the truth." I watched as she desperately clung to her delusions, my voice laced with contempt. "You're the one who's in denial and making excuses for a murderer in the name of love.""That's not true!" she cried, her eyes bloodshot. "He loves me dearly. What would he gain by lying to me? You must've made a mistake!"Philip sighed. Glancing at me, he began hesitantly, "About the secret I said I'd tell you… Perhaps I should tell you now."Turning back to Wendy, he continued solemnly, "Your father, Samuel Quinton, was treated in the psychiatric department of our hospital years ago. My childhood friend is the head of that department. He told me that your father's schizophrenia wasn't caused by

I left the cemetery without looking back, but I had no intention of letting things slide. Zachary and Wendy would pay for everything they'd done to me, one way or another.Their relationship was built on lies. And once those lies came to light, the love they claimed to share would crumble in an instant.…The next day, I intercepted Dr. Philip Lawson, Edward's attending physician, in the hospital's inpatient wing. The moment he recognized me, panic flashed across his face. He hurriedly waved me off and tried to walk away. "I have a surgery to perform. I don't have time to deal with other patients right now.""You're quite the busy man, Dr. Lawson." I caught him by the wrist. "You deliberately killed a man on the operating table, and now you're running off to harm another unsuspecting patient?"He stopped dead in his tracks, and the color drained from his face. Then he shot me a wary look and lowered his voice."What do you want?""I don't mean you any harm," I said with a fa

Wendy's hand froze in midair. Trembling uncontrollably, she turned around and stared at Harold in shock."What did you just say?" she asked.Harold shakily handed her a folder. "Ms. Quinton, these are the hospital records, the death certificate, and the cremation documents. Everything is in here."Wendy snatched the folder from him and flipped it open with shaky fingers. As her eyes scanned the medical records, her lips began to quiver."This is impossible… Grandpa only had high blood pressure. He'd always been in good health. The doctors said it was normal for someone his age. How could this happen?"When she saw the death certificate, she started to sob even harder. "Dr. Lawson was recommended to us by Zach himself! He told me Grandpa would get better!"When Wendy looked up again, her eyes were clouded with confusion. "Wait—Zachary handled the paperwork? Why didn't he tell me? He told me that Grandpa was getting better every single day…"As she trailed off, her entire body

I froze for a moment. Then, I yanked the IV needle out of my hand and stumbled toward the door."The ICU is upstairs! You're going the wrong way!"But I wasn't going to the ICU. I was going to the morgue. Family members had to claim the body before it could be released. So, Edward's body still had to be there.Only one nurse stood by the entrance of the morgue. I shoved past her and rushed inside."What are you doing, sir?" she exclaimed in disbelief before hurrying after me.The moment she saw me reaching for one of the body drawers, she cried out, "Sir, this is illegal! If you keep this up, I'm going to have to call the police!"I shook off her hand and yanked open drawer number 35. But to my dismay, the drawer was empty."Where is he?" My voice trembled. "What happened to the body in drawer 35?"The nurse frowned. "Drawer 35? The patient's family claimed that body three days ago and had it cremated. Are you related to that young woman?"Young woman?By the time Wendy rus
