Chapter 4

Author: A Little Water
Noah ransacked my house the entire day but still didn't find me.

Just then, Amelia called him.

After he hung up, he left two burly men behind to keep watch. He then got into his car and drove off.

Before driving off, he gave one last order.

"Remember, if you see Victoria, bring her back to me no matter what it takes. I'm going to peel off her skin and give it to Amelia for the transplant."

With that, he sped away.

I didn't want to follow Noah. Yet, for some reason, I couldn't leave him. It felt like some invisible force had tied me to him, dragging me along whether I wanted to.

I ended up going with him to Amelia's ward.

She was lying in bed, visibly annoyed. Her once beautiful face was now twisted and frightening from the acid burns.

Noah handed her a plate of washed fruit. He then poured her a cup of warm water, wiped her face, and tended to her with meticulous care.

I could only shake my head with a bitter smile. He had never done any of this for me.

Back then, I was the one looking after him, and all I got in return was coldness and disdain.

His love, or the lack of it, was painfully obvious.

Amelia was his first love, his unreachable dream girl from the past. Thinking back on everything, I couldn't help but sigh.

When Amelia finished eating, Noah instinctively took the pits she spat out.

She frowned and snapped, "Noah, I'm getting fed up! What's going on with the face transplant? How much longer do I have to wait? Just looking at myself makes me sick!"

Noah shook his head.

"I went to Victoria's parents' place today. I searched everywhere, but she vanished without a trace. Her parents even tried to fool me by taking me to some grave and claiming it was hers.

"I didn't buy it, so I told the guys to dig it up. And guess what? There were only a few bones in the coffin, probably from some stray dog. Did they really think I'd fall for that?"

I saw a flicker of panic flash across Amelia's face.

"Darling, stop looking for her, okay? We'll figure something out."

She reached out and gently stroked his cheek. Her voice was soft, almost hypnotic.

"You know how much I care about appearances. Look at me now. I can't live like this. I saved your life, remember? You owe me. Please help me…"

There was something chilling about her at that moment. It made Noah shudder.

I let out a cold laugh.

Everyone else might be in the dark, but Amelia knew full well I was already dead. All she wanted was to trick Noah into giving her his skin.

Noah gave her a slight nod.

"Don't worry. I'll make sure you get a new face."

The next morning, after feeding Amelia breakfast, Noah headed back to my house.

The two burly men from yesterday rushed over when they saw him. They said they hadn't seen me, but they found a document that might be important.

Noah took the file with a doubtful expression.

The moment he opened it, he froze in shock. It was my death certificate.

I didn't know this woman, but I had a pretty good guess who she was.Her son had likely also been deceived by Amelia. The middle-aged woman blocked the path of the guards, pointing at Amelia."Officers, this woman's involved in human trafficking. My son had just graduated when he met her. He was good-looking and bright. After going on a trip with her to Valoria, he went missing. For years, I've been investigating this quietly, afraid of tipping her off. "I finally discovered that she's a trafficker who sold my son to Valoria. And those missing college boys over the years? She's the one who sent them there. I've uncovered everything. Please rescue these children. My son is likely dead, but there are many others still enduring unimaginable torment!"The crowd murmured around her."Oh my goodness, is she talking about all those missing male students from top universities? Was it Amelia again?""This is terrifying. It's true that the devils walk among us. A monster like her deserve

Noah's cheek quickly became swollen, but my parents acted as if they didn't see it. They took Oliver into the room and shut the door.He stayed there, kneeling on the ground well into the night. When he finally left, his steps were unsteady. He kept muttering apologies to himself.I sighed. What was the point of all this now? That night, I found myself drifting in front of Noah again. He had somehow found the photos of us from before and placed them on the dining table. He lit candles and prepared a lavish dinner. They were all my favorite dishes.Back when I was alive, he never once cooked for me. Now, he'd made so much of the food I liked. For a moment, I felt a strange sense of relief. So he did know what I liked to eat."Honey, I know you love these, so I made them for you. I read online that when someone is murdered, and the killer isn't punished, their soul won't rest."Noah reached out to touch the air."Honey, you're here with me, aren't you? I miss you so much…"He

Noah crouched down, sobbing uncontrollably.I sighed. Why was he crying over me when I was already dead?Amelia pled guilty and was taken into custody. A few days later, she was brought to court.I followed along, drifting with her.Amelia was sentenced to death. The day before her execution, they asked if she had any last wishes. She said she wanted to see Noah one last time. Despite his reluctance, Noah went to see her. After such a long time apart, Amelia had become much thinner, her scars more grotesque.Noah's tone was harsh. "Is there anything left to say between us?""Of course there is." Amelia's amber eyes glinted with mischief."I'm going to die. There are still things I need to tell you."She paused for a moment."Do you know why I had you undergo limb-lengthening surgery? It's because you resemble my dream guy by 80%. The final 20% was because you were too short. Only by having the surgery could you look like him."Noah stared at her in disbelief."So, you neve

As soon as Amelia was wheeled out of the examination room, she was surrounded by a group of police officers. They showed their badges and said sternly, "Ms. Amelia Duffy, we need your cooperation regarding a murder case from one year ago.""Me? I'm just a regular person. I don't know how I could possibly help you. Just look at my face…"The officers ignored her explanation and cuffed her on the spot. She and Noah were taken to the police station. Amelia was locked into the interrogation chair. The room was cramped and dim, with a single spotlight aimed straight at her face. One officer questioned her coldly, "Did you kill Victoria a year ago?"Amelia's eyes darted. Instead of answering, she shot back, "You're the ones accusing me of murder. Shouldn't you be the ones providing evidence rather than me proving my innocence?"I figured she was speaking with such confidence because she was certain there hadn't been any evidence left behind that night. If there had been, she wou

Noah frowned, clearly in disbelief. He stepped forward and snapped at the police. "Are you sure you've got the right person? Just because there's a body floating in formalin, you're saying it's Victoria? It could be someone else. That woman's cunning. This might just be another trick to avoid donating her skin to Amelia!"The officer's expression turned cold. He said sternly, "Mr. Carlson, this wasn't a casual judgment. We have strict identification procedures. I suggest you show some respect to the deceased."Noah still wanted to argue, but the officer's sharp gaze shut him up.Nearby, the janitor trembled as he added, "I-I was just cleaning when I saw someone floating in a big jar. It scared the hell out of me. I called the police right away. I never imagined I'd run into something like this…"I hovered off to the side, watching everything unfold. I never thought this would be how I showed up again. And even now, Noah was only thinking about getting Amelia a new face. My li

Noah roared, "Watch your mouth, old hag. Amelia is the woman I love, not some tramp. Got it? She's my first and only love! Apologize. Now!"However, my mom refused to apologize.Noah pressed his foot down harder on her chest. Still, she stayed silent. He grew more agitated and turned to Oliver. He waved the knife in front of Oliver again. "You old hag, either you apologize now, or I'll kill this little bastard right in front of you!"Panicked, my dad fell out of his wheelchair and scrambled over. He gripped Noah's ankle in a desperate attempt to take the pressure off my mom's chest."Noah, we were wrong. Amelia isn't a tramp. If there's any shred of conscience left in you, let them go. You want an apology, right? I'll do it! I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry!"As soon as my dad apologized, Noah finally lifted his foot off my mom's chest. She dropped to her knees and broke down in tears."Noah, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'll kneel and apologize. I shouldn't have called Amelia a tram
