Iris’s POV

I hadn’t seen Rowan since the kiss incident two weeks ago. Or maybe it was more accurate to say that I had been avoiding him. Though I knew that he had been avoiding me too. We both knew it was easier not to cross paths.

Every time I thought about it, my stomach tightened with a feeling that was not unpleasant. Instead, it left me uneasy, and restless, so I needed to keep busy to shake off the heat that memory brought up.

So I focused on training.

Lucas watched me closely as I slammed my fist into the training dummy again and again. It wasn’t a normal dummy, it was made for werewolves. It was heavy, strong and rough, like punching a tree. Each punch tore at my knuckles. I could feel my old wounds from the previous day opening again.

“Again,” Lucas said flatly, his arms crossed.

I grit my teeth and forced another punch. My arm shook from the impact, and my knuckles were probably about to start bleeding again.

Pain shot up my wrist, but I ignored it and hit again. And again.

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 193

Iris’s POVThe Alpha King was tall, probably in his sixties but thanks to his powerful werewolf gene, he still looked very strong and commanding. His hair was silver, his face had some wrinkles, due to his age, but his blue eyes were sharp and alert. He wore deep purple and gold formal robes in deep purple and gold, and a crown sat on his head. The power radiating from him was incredible. I could feel it even from across the room. This was someone who had ruled for over fifty years, someone who commanded respect from every Alpha.Everyone in the room stood immediately, bowing their heads in respect. The King walked slowly down the aisle between the tables, his eyes scanning the crowd. A kind smile was on his face as he nodded to various Alphas and Lunas. When his eyes landed on our table, he paused. He looked at Rowan, then at me, and his smile widened slightly. The King’s steps slowed as he approached our table.“Alpha Rowan,” he greeted, his deep voice carrying warmth and respect.R

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 192

Iris’s POVZara’s face went pale, taking a step back. Eric stepped forward quickly, his hands raised.“That’s enough, Zara,” Eric snapped. “Let’s go inside now.”Rowan ignored them, turning back to me instead as his expression softened immediately. “Come on,” he said gently, guiding me toward the open doors.I nodded, staying silent. My legs felt shaky as we walked through the massive golden doors, leaving Eric, Zara, and Tiffany behind us in the hallway. As soon as we were inside, I felt like I could breathe again. But I was still shaking, trying to hold myself together.“I’ve got you,” Rowan murmured, his arm tightening around my waist. “You did so well, Iris. I’m so proud of you.”“I almost broke,” I whispered. “For a moment, I almost—”“But you didn’t,” Rowan interrupted gently. “You didn’t allow them see you break.”Shane and Jasmine caught up to us, both looking furious.“That woman is vile,” Jasmine hissed.“She’s going to pay,” Shane added darkly. “One way or another.”“Not he

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 191

Iris's POVFrom the shock on Zara and Tiffany’s faces, it was clear they hadn’t been expecting to see me here. They looked like they hadn’t expected to see me alive. Eric probably hadn’t told them about our encounter at Rowan’s pack weeks ago.Zara tried to hide her shock, but she couldn’t. Her eyes widened before she schooled her expression into something more neutral. But I had seen the flash of surprise and disbelief that I was standing here.“Well, well,” Zara said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. She looked me up and down, her lip curling slightly. “Iris. What a surprise. I didn’t realize they let just anyone attend the Alpha King’s ball these days.”The insult was clear. She was implying I didn’t belong here, that I wasn’t good enough to be in attendance.Inside, I was shaking. My heart was pounding so hard every instinct screamed at me to run and get away from these people who had caused me so much pain. But outside, I remained calm and steady. I lifted my chin slightl

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 190

Iris's POV My heart clenched. I had spent the whole day hoping to avoid them, and now there was nowhere to hide.Time seemed to slow down. My vision blurred as I stared at them. Eric was in a black tuxedo, looking as polished as always. Zara was in a red dress that was far too revealing with her hand possessively on Eric’s arm. Tiffany looked older than the last time I had seen her, she was wearing a dress that matched her mother’s.It became hard to breathe. My hands started to shake as all the meditation, all the preparation, and everything Lucas had taught me, all seemed to fly out of my head. Then I felt Rowan’s arm tighten around my waist.“Breathe,” he murmured quietly, loud enough for only me to hear. “Just breathe, Iris. I’ve got you.”I forced myself to breathe. I inhaled through my nose, held for four seconds, then exhaled through my mouth. We were still walking forward, getting closer to the doors, and getting closer to them.Eric hadn’t noticed us yet. He was saying somet

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 189

Iris’s POVThe moment we were alone, I kicked off my shoes and collapsed on the bed with a groan.Rowan lifted an eyebrow in amusement.“My feet are killing me,” I complained. “I’m so exhausted from all those introductions.”“We have about two and a half hours before we need to get ready for the ceremony,” Rowan said, sitting beside me. “You should rest.”“I don’t think I can sleep,” I admitted. “I’m too anxious.”“Then just close your eyes and breathe,” Rowan suggested. “Like Lucas taught you.”I nodded and closed my eyes, focusing on my breathing. We stayed like that for a while, and I felt some of my tension ease.“Better?” Rowan asked after a while.“A little,” I admitted, opening my eyes. There was a knock at the door, and palace staff entered with our luggage. They placed everything carefully in the bedroom, then bowed and left.I must have dozed off at some point because the next thing I knew, Rowan was gently shaking my shoulder.“Iris,” he said softly. “It’s time to get ready.

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 188

Iris’s POVAs we drove through the Alpha King’s territory, I looked out the window, watching everything. Rowan’s pack was the second largest after the Alpha King’s pack, so the difference in size wasn’t much. Some pack members stopped to watch our car pass.“It’s impressive, isn’t it?” Jasmine said, looking out the window too.“Very,” I agreed. After about fifteen minutes, we arrived at the palace, and it was really a palace. It was a massive castle with towers and balconies, surrounded by beautiful gardens. It looked like something in a fairy tale.“Wow,” Jasmine breathed.“Yeah,” Shane muttered. “It’s breathtaking.”The car stopped at the main entrance, and palace staff immediately rushed forward to help us out. Rowan exited first, then turned to help me down.As I stepped out of the car, I felt every eye turn toward us. There were other Alphas and their mates arriving as well, they were all dressed in formal attire.Rowan kept his arm firmly around my waist as we walked toward the
