Chapter 3

작가: Jo Wren
"Oh—where did I put the gold pocket watch?" Before I could even finish, he stood up. "The one my father passed down to me, the one I showed Nico before. Gabe's gotten curious about it, so I'm letting him keep it for a few days."

He didn't wait for an answer. He went straight to the study and took the gold watch out of the safe.

He grabbed his keys, and before I could say another word, he was already out the door.

The door shut behind him with a bang.

His shape flickered past the window, and then he was gone.

I stood there, staring at the closed door for a long time.

Then I said the sentence he'd never let me finish, alone, to myself.

"Actually—my son and I don't need you anymore."

Two days left before we were gone for good.

Near midnight, once I'd finally finished packing, I lay down, worn straight through.

My phone lit up. A message from Dante.

[Gabe loves the watch. Won't even take it off to sleep. Bianca said to tell you thank you.]

It was already midnight, and my husband was texting me to pass along another woman's gratitude.

The anger simply wouldn't come.

The ending was already written, no matter what I did.

I opened the thread and typed back.

[No need to thank me. I wasn't the one who gave it to him.]

[Also—Nico really loves that watch. Make sure you bring it back.]

I sent it and closed my eyes. I didn't stay awake to see how it landed on his end.

At eight the next morning, Dante came home early—rare for him.

He stepped inside, started shrugging off his coat, and stopped dead at the sight of the suitcases lined up in the living room.

"That's a lot of luggage for a trip."

He strode into the bedroom without bothering to take off his coat, his composure cracked.

I was dressing Nico and didn't turn around. "We're going somewhere far."

He looked straight at our son instead, and something in him eased once Nico nodded back at him.

He set his coat aside and pulled three tickets to the amusement park from inside his jacket.

"Haven't you always been upset that I never took him to the amusement park?" He fanned the tickets out, pleased with himself. "I bought tickets for today. The three of us, together."

For a second, I genuinely doubted I'd heard him right.

The amusement park. I'd asked him about it once, and he never agreed.

Why was he suddenly buying tickets today?

Then I thought of the message from last night, still sitting unanswered, and it clicked.

He hadn't brought the watch back. This was his way of making it up to Nico instead.

I didn't answer. I kept buttoning Nico's shirt.

Nico could barely contain himself, staring at me intently. "Mom, I want to go!"

I was about to answer when Dante added something behind me.

"There's just—one condition, if we go today. Bianca found out we're retaking the family portrait, and she's worried Gabe will hear about it and get upset, so... let's push the portrait back again."

Guilt was written all over his face as he said it.

Nico went still. I watched the light drain slowly out of his eyes.

"Oh..."

He dropped his head and said nothing else. His eyes had gone red.

Dante didn't notice. He kept going.

"It's just one small thing Bianca asked for. I thought about it—shouldn't matter much. We'll skip it this time. There's always a next time." He turned to Nico. "Right, buddy?"

He had no idea that by tomorrow, we would be gone for good.

He thought he was buying time. He was just running out of it.

But neither Nico nor I said a word about it. We just nodded.

"Okay."

"Sure."

Dante's whole face relaxed, relief written across it plain as day. "I'll go tell Bianca now. We'll meet at the park at three."

He turned to leave. Near the door, he glanced back.

"My Donna. My son. Nobody is better to me than you two."

Neither of us answered that either.

The second the door closed behind him, Nico slid off the bed and pulled an already-packed backpack out of the closet.

"Mom. I don't want to see Don Amato again. Can we leave early?"

  • Too Late, Don Amato   Chapter 11

There was a time when it was Nico and me chasing after him. When would he come home? Could he spare even an hour for his son? Did we hold any place in his heart at all?Now it was reversed. He was the one chasing after us.But we didn't look back anymore. On holidays, I took Nico traveling. In winter, we went to see the snow in the Alps.In summer, we surfed the Mediterranean. On breaks, we toured old castles across Europe.Somehow Dante always got hold of our itinerary and quietly followed along. When we waited at the airport, he'd be sitting not far off. When we ate breakfast at the hotel, he'd be watching from two tables away. When Nico went skiing, he trailed behind at a distance, terrified the boy would fall. One time, Nico really did fall.Dante practically sprinted across the snow to reach him.But Nico had already scrambled up on his own, brushing the snow off his coat."I don't need help, Don Amato."Dante's outstretched hand froze in midair. In the end, he could only speak qu

  • Too Late, Don Amato   Chapter 10

In all our years of marriage, he had always been the untouchable Don—proud, unbending, towering above everyone. It was the first time I had ever seen him like this: shattered, desperate, stripped down to nothing. But the second Nico's name slipped past his lips, every trace of pity inside me died, and my gaze turned to ice."You're only thinking of Nico now?"Dante opened his mouth. Nothing came out.Soft footsteps sounded behind me.Nico had followed me out.He looked at Dante begging so desperately, his face very quiet.Dante seized on him like a drowning man grasping at straws, waving frantically through the gate."Nico.""Dad's here.""Talk to your mom for me, please?""Dad doesn't want to be apart from her."He thought Nico would relent. After all, Nico used to cling to him more than anyone. The moment he came home, Nico would run and wrap himself around his leg, calling "Dad" over and over. But this time, Nico only stepped half a step back, closer to me.Then he spoke calmly."Do

  • Too Late, Don Amato   Chapter 9

The words drove into Dante's chest like a blade. He stared at the screen, motionless, for a long moment.Bianca was still laughing."So you really didn't know.""Dante, you're pathetic.""Your wife and son don't want you anymore, and here you are, playing daddy to someone else's kid like a fool."Dante turned abruptly and started for the door.Bianca called after him."Where are you going?"Dante didn't look back.Bianca's voice went sharp."You think if you go running after her now, she'll just forgive you?""She stopped wanting you a long time ago!"Dante's footsteps faltered.Only for a second. Then he strode toward the exit even faster.Bianca snatched the water glass from the bedside table in a blind rage and hurled it after him.It shattered violently against the doorframe. In that same instant, Gabe began convulsing on the bed.His face turned from pale to blue, and the heart monitor shrieked into alarm.A nurse rushed to his side."Severe drug toxicity! He's gone into arrhythmi

  • Too Late, Don Amato   Chapter 8

Dante shot to his feet.Even hating Bianca as much as he did in that moment, the thought of a child in danger dragged him out the door on pure reflex. In the hospital room, Bianca sat keeping vigil at the bedside.Gabe's small body was sunken into the mattress, his face bloodless, ghost-white.The oxygen mask fogged with every weak, ragged breath. An IV line was taped to the back of his hand. The heart monitor emitted a sharp, urgent rhythm of beeps. The doctor had just given him an emergency injection, but he was still trembling, limp and frail.Dante had his hand on the door when Gabe's voice drifted through from inside."Mommy, I did what you said. I swallowed it...""Will Uncle Dante come sit with me now?"Dante's hand froze on the cold metal handle.Bianca lowered her voice, a trace of twisted satisfaction in her tone."He will.""Dante can never say no to us.""As long as you're suffering like this, as long as you cry, he'll come running."Gabe gasped for air, his voice thick wit

  • Too Late, Don Amato   Chapter 7

Around nine that night, Dante arrived home.As he unlocked the door, he was still clinging to one last shred of hope.Maybe Elena had just taken Nico to a friend's house.Maybe she was only giving him the silent treatment.Maybe...But the instant the door swung open, that final illusion shattered. The entryway was empty. The shoe cabinet, once crowded with Elena's and Nico's shoes, now held only his own.The living room was stripped bare. The oversized wedding portrait on the wall was gone. The photo of the three of them at the beach was gone. The three matching mugs on the coffee table were gone.Dante walked into the master bedroom and yanked open the wardrobe.Every single hanger of Elena's clothes had vanished. The vanity was wiped bare—she hadn't left behind a single bottle of anything. He rushed into Nico's room next.Nico's small bed was made, neat and immaculate. His backpack was gone. His toys were gone.Even the crayon drawing Nico had taped up himself—"Our Family Trip to th

  • Too Late, Don Amato   Chapter 6

Dante drove toward the amusement park.If he could just drive fast enough and get there on time, maybe he could make up for everything he'd cost them. But the road was jammed solid, traffic stretching as far as he could see.He called Elena again and again. No one picked up.Assuming she was still angry, he started texting instead.[Elena, Gabe's fine. I'm on my way to the park right now.][Don't leave. I'll be there soon.][I'm not breaking my promise. I'm really coming.]He sent message after message. None of them got a reply. He called Nico too. Nico's phone was off.Elena had never once left his texts unanswered before.Nico's phone had never once been turned off. This was the first time.Dante's pulse quickened, a bad feeling spreading through him.He suddenly thought of what Elena had said yesterday."We're going somewhere far."At the time, he'd assumed she only meant a trip with Nico.Thinking back on it now, her voice had been too calm.Too calm for anger. It sounded more like
