Blood trailed down each step of the staircase in Hawthorne Hall.
“Bitch, how dare you use that bastard child in your womb to force Henry to break up with me?” Rose Carter’s face twisted with ferocity, her eyes wide and bloodshot, her shrill voice dripping with malice. She twirled the knife in her hand, its cold gleam sending a shiver through Margaret Walker. The blood running along the blade was Margaret’s, spilled from the wound Rose had inflicted on her arm moments ago. “That child, and you, should have died long ago.” As Rose spoke, the knife came to a halt right in front of Margaret’s abdomen, making her tremble uncontrollably as cold sweat broke out across her skin. Instinctively, she clutched her stomach. “Rose... don’t do this...” “The baby is innocent.” “If you really kill my son, you’ll spend the rest of your life in prison...” Margaret’s voice was hoarse with fear, yet her words only drove Rose further into madness. “Bitch, you still dare to threaten me? Damn you!” Rose snarled and lunged forward, stabbing again. Blood burst from Margaret’s right arm once more, leaving a streak of crimson across the hallway. Margaret cried out in pain, clutching her arm as panic overtook her. Her heart pounded wildly in her chest, cold sweat soaking her back. “Rose, calm down. I really didn’t force Henry to leave you.” “I only said that if he had cheated on me, we would divorce.” “However, because he was worried it would affect the cooperation between our two corporations, he knelt down and begged me to forgive him.” “And he even promised to cut off all ties with you.” Margaret tried to explain, hoping to calm Rose down, though the situation itself was utterly ridiculous. She was Henry’s wife, yet she had to explain herself just to soothe the emotions of his mistress, his ex-girlfriend. After hearing her, Rose clearly had no intention of letting her go. Her gaze turned vicious to the extreme. “Are you feeling proud of yourself?” Rose sneered. “Showing off that Henry still loves you, that he willingly abandoned me because of you?” “You bitch, Henry doesn’t love you at all.” “The only person he has ever loved is me. He only married you for the cooperation between the two corporations.” Rose lifted the knife, her voice dropping lower. “He doesn’t even want to go back to you. It’s just that divorcing you right now would give his uncle the chance to drive him out of the company!” “It’s all because of you, and that bastard child.” Rose gritted her teeth, biting her lip viciously. “As long as you die, Henry and I can finally be happy together.” She let out a cold, sinister laugh as she stepped forward. “Your parents are probably waiting for you and that bastard child in hell.” “Say your final goodbye to this life.” With a sharp thrust. Before Margaret could even react, the knife plunged straight into her abdomen. A searing pain tore through her body, forcing her to collapse, trembling violently. “Die, bitch!” Rose viciously drove the knife into Margaret’s heart once more, then let go of the handle and shoved her forward with force. Losing all balance, Margaret fell down the staircase. Bang. Bang. She tumbled down several steps in succession, her bones feeling as if they were shattering, blood staining each step a deep red. Blood flowed not only from her arm and abdomen, but also from beneath her, soaking through the dress she wore. Darkness clouded her vision, her breath growing faint, and she could feel a life slipping away from her body. Her son... No... it couldn’t be... Struggling, Margaret raised a trembling hand to her stomach and saw bright blood. Her breathing became so faint it was nearly imperceptible, the blood loss worsening with every second. Her vision blurred more and more. Click. At that moment, the door opened. Henry had just stepped inside and was startled by the scene on the staircase. Margaret’s eyes lit up, as if she had found her last glimmer of hope. Then. “Ah, Henry, it hurts so much.” Rose suddenly collapsed to the ground, her eyes glistening with tears as she clutched her leg. She blinked up at Henry, her voice soft and pitiful. “Margaret pushed me... it hurts... I’m bleeding...” She spoke in a fragile tone, and Henry ignored Margaret, immediately rushing to Rose’s side. “Henry... help... our son...” Margaret gasped, using the last of her strength to reach out toward him, clinging to that fragile thread of hope. If Henry took her to the hospital, perhaps their son could still be saved. She looked at Henry with desperate hope, and he looked back at her, hesitation flickering in his eyes. His lips pressed together as he was about to step toward her, only to be stopped by Rose, who clung to him, pleading softly, her voice growing weaker. “Henry, can you take me to the hospital?” Henry tore his gaze away from Margaret and carefully helped Rose to her feet. “I’ll take you to the hospital.” He said it calmly, without sparing Margaret a single glance as she lay in a pool of blood. As if she were nothing more than a stranger. Without another thought, Henry turned and lifted Rose into his arms. The last glimmer of hope in Margaret was shattered, leaving only despair behind. She went still, staring at the man she had loved for six years, her heart breaking into pieces. The man who once missed an important board meeting just to come home and take care of her when she was sick. The man who had shed tears at their wedding, solemnly promising to love her for a lifetime. The man who had smiled like a child when he learned she was pregnant, vowing to become a good father. That same man had not only betrayed her but also abandoned her after his mistress pushed her down the stairs. Her vision dimmed further, her breathing growing heavier. Margaret suddenly felt as if her entire life had been nothing but a cruel joke, built upon Henry’s lies. Regret surged within her like a rising tide, making her chest ache. Tears slid silently down her beautiful face. “Henry, goodbye.” Her voice was so soft it was almost inaudible. “If there is a next life... I will make you and Rose pay.” And this time, Margaret would never be foolish enough to love Henry again.Margaret awkwardly averted her gaze, pretending she hadn’t heard anything.“Margaret...”The sudden silence made Christopher let out an unconscious sigh.“I know you heard that.”Margaret continued to ignore him, though a faint blush crept onto her face. For the first time, she didn’t coldly refute him when he brought up marrying her.“Okay, darling. If you don’t want to, then forget it.”“Let’s just consider that I didn't say anything.”Christopher murmured helplessly.Ding.The elevator doors opened, and Margaret rushed out immediately. She was afraid that if she stayed even a second longer, Christopher would notice the flush on her cheeks. As soon as she stepped out, she saw Christopher’s henchmen already there. They were restraining the assassin from earlier, silently waiting for Margaret and Christopher to arrive.“Knock on the door.”“Or better yet, break it down and go in.”Christopher calmly pulled Margaret slightly behind him to avoid any trouble, then spoke coldly. His hench
Margaret shoved him backward with all her strength, her elbow striking sharply against his face.As the man staggered back in pain, she seized the opportunity and ran forward as fast as she could, not forgetting to cry out to the reception.“Help me! He’s a kidnapper!”She shouted in desperation, then fled frantically, not daring to linger for even a second. Her heart pounded as if it might burst from her chest; her lips parted as she gasped wildly for air.Bang.A gunshot tore through the air, aimed straight at Margaret. However, she had been warned by Cole once, so she ran in a zigzag pattern.By sheer luck, she avoided the bullet and kept running without stopping. But the shot struck the hotel doors instead, shattering the glass. Shards rained down in front of her, scattering at her feet, glinting with a cold light. With the gunshot, the hotel lobby descended into chaos. The reception staff screamed, scrambling wildly to find cover.Several nearby guests also ran in all directions,
“Don’t move, or I’ll shoot your friend.”Seeing Emily, pale with shock, about to rush forward to save her, the man in black let out a cold laugh. The icy barrel of the gun was pressed straight against Margaret’s forehead, forcing Emily to stop in her tracks at once.Margaret couldn’t stop herself from trembling slightly. What on earth was happening? She swallowed unconsciously, lowering her voice in an attempt to negotiate.“Hey, who exactly hired you to come here?”“How much did that person pay you? I can give you double, just let me go.”Emily’s eyes lit up, and she immediately followed along.“That’s right, we have plenty of money. If you let my friend go, we can give you double, triple, or even ten times the amount.”A cold, mocking laugh escaped the man in black. His voice turned harsh.“Shut up. Do you think money can solve everything?”He pointed the gun straight at Margaret’s throat.“Say one more word, and I’ll make sure you can never open your mouth again for the rest of you
Emily spoke, but Margaret didn’t expose her. She merely let out an “oh,” as if she truly believed it.Yet the look in her eyes still shimmered with amusement.Emily shot her a glare, then awkwardly looked away. What had happened earlier wasn’t important, so Margaret had no intention of bringing it up. She calmly said she was tired and wanted to head back first, asking if Emily was leaving as well.Emily lifted her head, blinking as she glanced at Caleb before smiling softly.“Alright, I’ll go back with you.”“Come over to my place tonight. It’s been a while since we stayed together and had a proper chat.”Emily spoke excitedly, but Margaret hesitated, glancing toward Caleb.“Then your boyfriend...”After all, Margaret had assumed that Emily and Caleb would be spending the night together. However, Emily waved it off casually.“Caleb will obviously go back to his own place. Besides, he has a business trip to Italy tomorrow, so he needs to pack tonight.”Margaret let out a small sound of
“Don’t be so cold, darling. I’m very rich, I’ve got plenty of money. I’m definitely richer than your boyfriend.”“So leave him and be with me.”The man’s heated gaze lingered on Margaret as he spoke with complete confidence. Margaret struggled to free herself, then quickly moved away from the chaotic scene. She understood clearly that once he had said that much, he was no longer in control of his behavior. Arguing with a drunk was nothing but foolish.“Honey, don’t go. Whatever amount you want, I can give it to you.”“Spend one night with me, I’ll give you a hundred thousand dollars, how about that?”Seeing Margaret walk farther away, nearly out of sight, the man shouted loudly to draw attention. Even amid the deafening music, his voice still carried, successfully attracting the gazes of several patrons in the bar.At this point, not reacting would be foolish.Margaret stopped, turned around, and signaled for the bodyguards who had been lurking at a distance to step forward. Then, jus
Christopher truly did exactly as he had promised. The very next day, news of his return to the headquarters of Sebastian Corporation in the U.S. spread widely across the media and reached Margaret’s ears.Hearing this, she let out an unconscious sigh of relief. For now, not seeing him again was for the best. She would treat everything that had happened as nothing more than a dream. As for her, she would continue pursuing her original goal.“Margaret, what are you spacing out about again?”Cole’s voice sounded at just the right moment, laced with displeasure. He shot her a glare, his tone rising.“I’m asking you, why did you hide the fact that you were pushed off a cliff and ended up this badly injured?”“You’re all grown up now, so when something dangerous happens, you don’t need to tell your family anymore, is that it?”“You don’t take anyone seriously now?”With each word, Cole’s anger grew. By the last sentence, a cold, mocking smile appeared on his lips, his usual expression when
