Boom.

Hudson felt like he'd been struck by lightning. His voice was so dry it was almost a whisper.

"...What did you say?!"

"Miss Bianca just messaged me. She said to have you call her after you hang up, that she has her adoptive parents under control."

Dimitri's voice was rushed. He paused, then sighed.

"It seems you really did wrong Miss Liriel. She must be heartbroken."

Hudson's throat worked, but no sound came out. After a long silence, he finally managed a hoarse command.

A month later, Dexter and I were on our honeymoon, traveling the world.I was sunbathing on a beach.Beside me, Dexter was mixing drinks, his face sour. He was glaring at Hudson, who was a short distance away."That shameless old bastard! Why is he stalking us on our honeymoon!"I was used to his grumbling. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively, "You're my husband. Who cares about him?"That one sentence was all it took. Dexter's face lit up, and he happily went to get me some cut fruit.A moment later, my phone buzzed with another message from Hudson:[There's a gala at the hotel tonight. I brought a set of jewelry that would go perfectly with the gown you had made the other day.]I didn't reply.I just got up and walked back to the hotel. Not long after I got back to our suite, a hotel employee knocked on the door with the jewelry set.I was about to refuse when I saw Hudson standing in the distance. His eyes were full of sorrow, his smile bitter."Just think of

Inside the hallowed, ancient castle. The wedding march began to play.My face covered by a veil, I held my dress and walked down the aisle toward Dexter. The officiant stood between us, reciting the vows.Until he asked:"...does the bride take the groom?"In the next second, a deep, urgent voice cut through the quiet."She doesn't."The guests erupted in murmurs.I instinctively looked toward the voice and my heart leaped when I saw it was Hudson. He had lost a lot of weight; his tailored suit hung loosely on his frame. His leg seemed to be injured; he was leaning on a cane for support. He looked at me, his handsome eyes filled with love and regret."Liriel, I'm sorry.""I was wrong. I thought that by letting you go, letting you see the world and meet people your own age, you would understand what love really is. So when things happened, I would always blame you. It wasn't until the truth came out that I realized how foolish I was. The person I thought I was repaying a debt to was an

Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. Intensive Care Unit.Hudson slowly opened his eyes. The person beside him was instantly ecstatic. "Don, you're finally awake?!"...The biggest news in Chicago was the upcoming Thorne family wedding. The groom was the young Thorne Don, the one who had miraculously survived a kidnapping at age seven and had shown no interest in women for the sixteen years since. For nearly two weeks, the Chicago media had been digging for details about the bride. But besides the fact that she was a woman, all other information seemed to be on lockdown. The entire underworld was buzzing with curiosity about the future Mrs. Thorne. Finally, the wedding day arrived. The driveway of the lavish castle was lined with luxury cars and reporters from every major news outlet. The vast lawn had been planted with thousands of Fines de Claire roses, a symbol of "devotion to one person only.""I heard... the Thorne Don has been in love with his wife since they were seven!" a reporter f

The presentation was a huge success.I took my team out for a celebratory dinner.Afterward, I was outside waiting for a cab when Dexter's car pulled up."Miss Liriel, care for a ride?"Dexter grinned, his eyes sparkling under the streetlights. Before any of my colleagues could see, I quickly jumped into the passenger seat.As the car moved smoothly through the streets, I closed my eyes, pretending to rest."So when exactly is this husband of yours going to be made public?"Dexter's voice, full of mock complaint, broke the silence. He started listing my "suitors.""The project lead brought you coffee today. The department head smiled at you for way too long and asked you to play tennis this weekend!"Because I wanted to prove myself, I hadn't announced my status. I even made a point of disagreeing with him in meetings. This wasn't the first time he had complained.Seeing his pouting face, I tilted my head, a small smile playing on my lips, and decided to tease him."Well," I teased, "w

With all the intel gathered, Hudson and his men stormed the Brooke family's secret compound.Capo Rossi's real daughter, Elena, had been kept there. The Brooke family was caught completely off guard and quickly taken down.Hudson saw Elena. She was pale and thin, her skin almost translucent from lack of sunlight, her body covered in scars. She stared at him, her eyes wide. "Are you here to take me home?"Hudson had one of his men drape a coat over her shoulders and nodded gently. "I'll arrange a place for you. You will inherit your father's estate. No one will ever hurt you again."This time, he wouldn't be foolish enough to use his own marriage as a bargaining chip.A look of gratitude washed over Elena's face.Hudson was about to get in his car when he realized his ring was gone. The ring Liriel had given him, her declaration of love. He had taken it to the best jeweler, but it still had fine cracks in it.Even so, Hudson wore it like a treasure, waiting for the day he could show Lir

"It's not like that, Hudson! I was at home then, how could I have ordered him to do something like that?"Bianca was stuttering, terrified, but still denying everything.Hudson just stared at her, his expression cold and unreadable.Bianca's eyes were red. She tentatively tugged on his sleeve, tears streaming down her face."Hudson, I really didn't tell her bodyguards to leave. Please, believe me..."But Hudson, who would normally have pulled her into a comforting embrace, slowly pulled his sleeve from her grasp. His voice was glacial."Whether it was you or not, I will investigate everything. Including how Liriel got hurt."The coldness in his eyes sent a shiver down Bianca's spine. She looked down, hiding her guilt and unease, but didn't dare show any weakness. She forced a smile."Hudson, before you investigate, can you please get my parents out of jail? They're old, I'm worried..."Hudson straightened the cuff she had wrinkled, his tone puzzled."Why would I get them out? The evide
