Chapter 2

Author: Eirlys
My unprecedented obedience cracked his cold facade.

He didn't take the handkerchief.

A flicker of panic he couldn't hide crossed his eyes.

"Liriel," he said, his voice softening unconsciously, "your wounds haven't healed. Go back to your room and rest."

I looked at him and curved my lips into a small, empty smile.

"Of course, Uncle Hudson."

I turned, my back ramrod straight, and walked out of the hall under everyone's gaze.

It wasn't until I was in the empty garden, the night wind on my face, that I realized I was shaking from head to toe.

I bit my lip so hard I tasted blood, and the tears I'd been holding back finally broke free.

"Liriel!" My best friend, Anna, came running after me in her heels.

She pulled me into a hug, her voice laced with pain. "Why didn't you fight for him? This isn't you! You know if you make a scene, Hudson will always give in!"

I buried my face in her shoulder and closed my eyes, a bitter taste in my mouth.

Fight?

Last time, egged on by those comments, I crashed the party.

I successfully ruined the engagement and got my wish: I married Hudson.

I thought I'd finally found happiness. But on our wedding day, Bianca was kidnapped by enemies after her inheritance.

She called Hudson again and again, begging for help, but he was at our wedding. He didn't get a single call.

She was killed. The ransom was never paid.

Hudson was devastated. Consumed by guilt, he started to hate me.

"If you hadn't been so selfish and jealous, if you'd let me marry her and protect her, Bianca would still be alive!"

He had roared at me, looking at me like I was the enemy.

After that, he refused to see me.

Not even when I was pregnant with his child. Not even when I had a nervous breakdown, fell down the stairs, and miscarried in a pool of my own blood.

He was still cold. "You owed Bianca that."

In the end, I took the remains of our unborn child, poured gasoline all over the Volkov estate, and lit a match.

The pain of the fire is still seared into my bones.

This time, I won't make the same mistake.

I'm letting him go. And I'm letting myself go.

I wiped my tears and pushed Anna away gently.

"I'm fine, Anna. I'm not in love with him anymore."

I walked to the second-floor study and knocked on the old Don's door.

The old man sat behind his desk. Seeing my pale face, he let out a deep sigh.

"My dear child, you've been wronged."

I walked to him and dropped to my knees.

"Godfather, I heard the Family is considering an alliance with the Thornes in Chicago." I looked up, my gaze steady. "I'll do it. Send me."

The old Don was shaken. He sighed, looking at me.

"Liriel, Dexter Thorne is a wild card. A different kind of animal. You don't have to do this just to run from Hudson..."

"No, I'm serious," I cut him off. "The Volkov Family raised me for ten years. This is the only way I can repay you. And I want a change of scenery. A new start."

The old Don was silent for a long time. Finally, he opened a drawer, pulled out a thick file, and handed it to me.

"This is the five-hundred-million-dollar trust fund your parents left you," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I've added another five hundred million from my personal account. A gift."

"Take it. Go to Chicago. Live a good life."

I looked at the file, my eyes blurring with tears again.

I bowed deeply.

"Thank you, Godfather," I choked out. "Thank you for everything these past ten years."

"Get up," the old Don said, helping me to my feet.

"Godfather, I have one more request," I said, taking a deep breath. "Please, keep the marriage alliance a secret from Hudson. For now."

The old Don nodded. "Alright. I promise."

I took the file and turned towards the study door.

I gripped the handle and pulled it open.

In the dim light of the hallway, a tall figure stood silently by the door.

My heart skipped a beat.

Hudson was leaning against the wall, his tie loosened, a half-smoked cigar between his fingers.

Through the haze of smoke, his voice was dark and rough, heavy with a suffocating pressure.

"...What are you keeping from me?"

A month later, Dexter and I were on our honeymoon, traveling the world.I was sunbathing on a beach.Beside me, Dexter was mixing drinks, his face sour. He was glaring at Hudson, who was a short distance away."That shameless old bastard! Why is he stalking us on our honeymoon!"I was used to his grumbling. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively, "You're my husband. Who cares about him?"That one sentence was all it took. Dexter's face lit up, and he happily went to get me some cut fruit.A moment later, my phone buzzed with another message from Hudson:[There's a gala at the hotel tonight. I brought a set of jewelry that would go perfectly with the gown you had made the other day.]I didn't reply.I just got up and walked back to the hotel. Not long after I got back to our suite, a hotel employee knocked on the door with the jewelry set.I was about to refuse when I saw Hudson standing in the distance. His eyes were full of sorrow, his smile bitter."Just think of

Inside the hallowed, ancient castle. The wedding march began to play.My face covered by a veil, I held my dress and walked down the aisle toward Dexter. The officiant stood between us, reciting the vows.Until he asked:"...does the bride take the groom?"In the next second, a deep, urgent voice cut through the quiet."She doesn't."The guests erupted in murmurs.I instinctively looked toward the voice and my heart leaped when I saw it was Hudson. He had lost a lot of weight; his tailored suit hung loosely on his frame. His leg seemed to be injured; he was leaning on a cane for support. He looked at me, his handsome eyes filled with love and regret."Liriel, I'm sorry.""I was wrong. I thought that by letting you go, letting you see the world and meet people your own age, you would understand what love really is. So when things happened, I would always blame you. It wasn't until the truth came out that I realized how foolish I was. The person I thought I was repaying a debt to was an

The presentation was a huge success.I took my team out for a celebratory dinner.Afterward, I was outside waiting for a cab when Dexter's car pulled up."Miss Liriel, care for a ride?"Dexter grinned, his eyes sparkling under the streetlights. Before any of my colleagues could see, I quickly jumped into the passenger seat.As the car moved smoothly through the streets, I closed my eyes, pretending to rest."So when exactly is this husband of yours going to be made public?"Dexter's voice, full of mock complaint, broke the silence. He started listing my "suitors.""The project lead brought you coffee today. The department head smiled at you for way too long and asked you to play tennis this weekend!"Because I wanted to prove myself, I hadn't announced my status. I even made a point of disagreeing with him in meetings. This wasn't the first time he had complained.Seeing his pouting face, I tilted my head, a small smile playing on my lips, and decided to tease him."Well," I teased, "w

"It's not like that, Hudson! I was at home then, how could I have ordered him to do something like that?"Bianca was stuttering, terrified, but still denying everything.Hudson just stared at her, his expression cold and unreadable.Bianca's eyes were red. She tentatively tugged on his sleeve, tears streaming down her face."Hudson, I really didn't tell her bodyguards to leave. Please, believe me..."But Hudson, who would normally have pulled her into a comforting embrace, slowly pulled his sleeve from her grasp. His voice was glacial."Whether it was you or not, I will investigate everything. Including how Liriel got hurt."The coldness in his eyes sent a shiver down Bianca's spine. She looked down, hiding her guilt and unease, but didn't dare show any weakness. She forced a smile."Hudson, before you investigate, can you please get my parents out of jail? They're old, I'm worried..."Hudson straightened the cuff she had wrinkled, his tone puzzled."Why would I get them out? The evide
