Chapter 7

Author: Sarah Lane
I glimpsed the message and shoved the phone in my pocket, carrying the water cup back to the desk.

Blair asked me, “What’s up? You look pale.”

“Nothing.”

“Did you see the news?” She yielded to curiosity, “Liam…isn’t he your…?”

“Ex-boyfriend.”

“Aren't you going to check on him?”

“Why would I?”

Blair was astounded for a moment.

“He is just injured, not dead. Even if he died, it wouldn’t matter to me.”

Blair stared straight at me before breaking into a smile, “You truly don’t love him anymore.”

The illustration showed Lyra stood on a seaside cliff, wearing a white dress and smiling broadly. Neither Liam nor other was in sight. But, Lyra seemed well by herself.I put down my phone and felt released with a knowing smile. It turned out everyone would eventually move forward.Years later, I took a winter trip to the snow-capped mountain that was farther and higher than the one where Liam had proposed to me.I’ve been wondering why I came to climb it. Perhaps I hoped a towering peak would offer the clarity to finally let it go.It was a nice day. Sunlight glinted off the snow, casting a dazzling white glow. I climbed to the top all by myself, and sat down on the ground to catch my breath. The mountaintop was empty, silent. A gust of biting wind howled past and I wept. I gazed out rolling mountain ridges and inhaled deeply. “Sophia.” I turned. A man in a dark-colored windbreaker stood a short distance away. When he took off his glasses, I recognized him, Liam. He’s gotten a bit

Even if he died, it wouldn’t matter to me.”Blair stared straight at me before breaking into a smile, “You truly don’t love him anymore.”I didn't answer. Everyone thought I was just being stubborn and refusing to admit I still love Liam. Only I knew it was the truth.‌ When love is gone, it’s just gone. It was pouring rain the day I worked late. Stepping out of the office building, I forgot my umbrella and stood under the awning, waiting for the downpour to stop. A black car pulled over by the roadside. I found Liam in the driver’s seat when he rolled down the window. His right hand was wrapped in a thick white bandage, suspended i

Standing in the doorway, this thirty-year-old man wept like a kid.“Sophia.” Liam trembled, “How could you bear to leave me alone? Why are you giving up at this moment? I sneered, “Liam, stop lying to yourself! Don’t you realize you and Lyra have crossed the boundary? Can’t you see how she has been manipulating you? You just don’t want to let her go! You are the one who left me firstly.”I slammed the door, shutting out the world. A moment later, a thud echoed from the hallway, like a fist slamming into a wall.Mom stepped out of the kitchen, “Your Dad bought a new house in Luminara. Would you like to move there?”I hesitated, and then nodded. The plane landed at 4 p.m and Dad arrived early to pick us up. He helped me load the suitcase into the trunk, and glanced at me briefly in the rearview mirror.“I’ve lost weight.”“No, I haven’t.”He started the car, “It doesn’t matter. Dad will take care of you.”My nose twitched. I didn’t know what to say. Half a month later, I got an offer

Liam heavily panted, saying in a hoarse whisper, “Sophia. Are you leaving? Where are you going?“We’ve broken up. Wherever I go is none of your business.”Liam stepped into the elevator, blocking my path as he reached for my suitcase. “I can explain the bet.”I took a step back, “I don’t need it.”“Please, just let me finish.” He suddenly raised his voice, ‌his eyes glistening with tears, “That was a bet from seven years ago. At the very beginning, I chased after you on a whim, out of spite. But, it didn’t stay that way. I later realized I truly love you, Sophia!”"Liam." I cut him off coldly, “The way you love is really unique.”He bit his lip hard, unable to utter a word. The elevator arrived at the first floor. As the doors slid open, I pulled my suitcase forward, but Liam grabbed my wrist instantly. “Sophia, give me one more chance. Please.”“It has been seven years. How many chances have I given you?” I stared straight into his eyes. “Whenever you bickered with Lyra, exchanged g

There is a howling gale on the mountain top. The world suddenly fell silent when I gave my answer. Everyone was shocked. Liam knelt in the snow, the ring box suspended in midair. He looked blank when hopes were dashed, as if he hadn’t quite caught what I’d just said. “Sophia…what did you say?‌Liam’s voice trembled as he asked again.I stared at him, “I said no.”‌Liam’s storm pants were wet with snow as he kneeled on one knee for a long while.“Sophia.” Liam swallowed hard, “Don’t tease me. There are so many people watching…Behind me, friends’ smile froze.“I said I don’t.” I repeated every single word clearly and forcefully.Liam’s face finally darkened. It was not anger but confusion. He was confused that “why I’m still not satisfied when he has done everything for me?”“Sophia I know I haven’t been perfect, but…”“Liam!A shrill came from the path. Everyone turned to look. Lyra had somehow made her way up. Draped in the bathrobe and put on slippers, she hobbled through the snow i

  • Too Late, I Walked Away   Chapter 3

Early morning, Liam pulled me out of bed as if nothing has happened yesterday.“Sophia, it’s time to head out. It’s a sunny day for a hike.”There was no sign of displeasure last night on his face. It seemed that his figure rushing out of the door was nothing but my delusion.“Don’t worry. Lyra won’t come with us.” He paused as if he took it granted, “I’ve made full preparations for her. She can pamper herself with hot spring, ski resort and fine food at the foot of the mountain. I didn’t want her getting bored down there and coming up to cause trouble.”Liam even thought about the way for her to kill time. How thoughtful he was!The path up the mountain was steep. Liam walked ahead of me, occasionally turning around to lend me a hand. But he was absent-minded. Lyra’s messages came one after another. He replied to Lyra while talking to me, “Are you tired? We can take a break.”His phone rang before we finished less than half of the journey. It was Lyra, her voice trembling with tears.
