Nina smiled and said softly,

“It doesn’t hurt, Mom.”

She was trying hard to pretend everything was fine. She was afraid Lucia would feel even worse if she showed pain.

These days, Lucia’s tears appeared only for the two children. She wrapped her arms around them and lifted them gently.

“Have you been eating?” she asked.

“Yes!”

Nina clung tightly to Lucia’s neck. Her affectionate dependence was enough to irritate Lorenza just by watching.

Lucia carried the children to the dining room and sat down.

Lorenza spoke calmly,

“Lucia, Nina said earlier that she needed someone to feed her. She’s not a baby anymore. She should be learning to eat by herself.”
