Nina smiled and said softly,

“It doesn’t hurt, Mom.”

She was trying hard to pretend everything was fine. She was afraid Lucia would feel even worse if she showed pain.

These days, Lucia’s tears appeared only for the two children. She wrapped her arms around them and lifted them gently.

“Have you been eating?” she asked.

“Yes!”

Nina clung tightly to Lucia’s neck. Her affectionate dependence was enough to irritate Lorenza just by watching.

Lucia carried the children to the dining room and sat down.

Lorenza spoke calmly,

“Lucia, Nina said earlier that she needed someone to feed her. She’s not a baby anymore. She should be learning to eat by herself.”

Nina immediately lifted her head.

“I said that only when I’m sick. You misunderstood.”

Lorenza looked awkward.

“Oh
 right.”

Lucia said nothing. She simply picked up the spoon, ready to feed Nina.

But Nina took it from her.

“I can do it, Mom.”

Leonardo frowned. He didn’t understand why Nina had insisted on being fed earlier.

Once again, he th

Carolina Valencia was stunned by Lorenza. She wondered if this was the kind of person people referred to as “a tough one.” Lucia didn’t bother with pleasantries. She looked straight at Lorenza and said flatly, “Well, you’ve seen me now. Time to leave.” The only reason she had allowed Leonardo Marchesi into her home was to show him that leaving him wasn’t the end of her life. If anything, she was going to thrive. “We came all this way, and you’re not even offering us a meal?” Alexa said, clearly displeased. “Leonardo, you really need to teach her some manners. This is unacceptable.” Lucia replied coolly, “I didn’t hire any maids, so there’s no one here to cook for you.” Alexa scoffed confidently. “Don’t you know how to cook? And if not, your two friends could help. Hospitality matters in a respectable household. You don’t want people gossiping behind your back.” Even Carla Dougherty, who was usually gentle and quiet, couldn’t hold back. “Lucia still has her grandparents. Sh

The memory struck Leonardo Marchesi without warning, softening his expression. He looked at Lorenza and said gently, “I really should thank you for giving me two beautiful children.” Lorenza lowered her head. “I loved you so much back then. Having your children was all I ever wanted.” A trace of sadness shimmered in her eyes. Leonardo pressed his lips together. “I’ll have a caregiver stay with you later.” Lorenza froze. Was Lucia’s baby the only thing on his mind now? At People’s Hospital, as soon as they arrived, Leonardo made sure Lorenza was admitted to the orthopedic department. When he turned to leave, Giulia pursed her lips and said, “Leonardo, Lorenza’s injury looks serious. You’re not staying for her checkup? That would really hurt her feelings.” Lorenza tugged at Giulia’s hand. “Giulia, I’m fine.” Then she looked up at Leonardo and smiled gently. “Go on. Go see Lucia. See if she’s pregnant or just feeling unwell. I’ll be okay.” Something in Leonardo’s chest e

“Goodnight, Mom!” Nico giggled. Lucia held back her tears and said softly, “Alright. Goodnight.” She waited until the children were fast asleep before quietly ending the video call. She missed them terribly. But as much as she had every right to be angry with Leonardo, she knew she had no standing to compete with Lorenza. What she didn’t know was that, just outside the children’s room, Leonardo had been standing there the entire time. The hallway was quiet so late at night, and the children’s voices carried clearly. The door wasn’t soundproof—so that adults could hear if anything went wrong. Lucia’s gentle voice as she told the children a bedtime story stirred memories in Leonardo. Lucia had always been quiet, gentle, and smiling. She had treated him the same way. Even now, no matter how late it was, she never turned the children away when they needed her. Leonardo suddenly began questioning himself. Was Lucia really worse than Lorenza? Driven by a sudden impulse, he hea

Nina shook her head and said,“I’ll take the shots at home, Dad. I don’t want to stay here. It smells awful.”Leonardo Marchesi’s heart ached at the sight of her like this. After hesitating for a long moment, he finally gave in and agreed to take her home. This time, her injury had truly shaken him, so he took it seriously. He had already handed all his work over to his secretary and subordinates.Still, there was an upcoming meeting at San Celestino that he couldn’t avoid. Before that, he wanted to spend proper time with the children.Back home, Nina was resting in her room while Nico quietly sat by her side.Tina entered carrying a bowl of soup, but Nina immediately turned her face away.Tina set the bowl down and left with a polite smile. As soon as she was gone, Nina said,“Dad, I don’t like this nanny. She’s mean. I want Ms. Ana.”When Tina was mentioned, Leonardo replied,“She used to be your mom’s nanny. She’s very reliable. You’ll get used to her in time.”Nico frowned.“But

Lorenza froze for a second, then picked up the book cover. She stuttered, “B-But look how clean and neat these are.” Ana gently said, “Ms. Nina and Mr. Nico prefer covers with patterns.” Lorenza shot her a subtle glance, thinking that Ana and Davide really had no sense of their place. Smiling, Lorenza said, “I know you’ve worked hard taking care of the children, and I appreciate it. But as a nanny, it’s best to stay quiet when your boss is speaking. Otherwise, the children might pick up bad habits like interrupting adults.” Nina immediately jumped to defend Ana. “Ms. Ana is very kind to us.” “Mom said that all the household staff are part of the family and should be respected,” Nico repeated what Lucia had told them. Although the kids no longer resisted Lorenza as openly as before, there was a growing distance in their eyes. To them, Lorenza was an outsider. She had driven Lucia away along with Leonardo Marchesi, and now she was even scolding Ana. Their dislike f

Lorenza seemed uneasy about leaving Leonardo with Lucia. She slowly made her way down the stairs on her crutch. “Leonardo, don’t be mad anymore. This whole mess ruined Lucia’s birthday. It’s all my fault for being so careless,” she said. Lucia cast her a glance, then turned to Leonardo with a smile. “What do you think my relationship with them is?” “That’s something you should explain to me,” Leonardo replied, ignoring Lorenza. Lucia met his suspicious gaze. “If I told you I’ve known them since we were kids, would you believe me?” Leonardo’s eyes widened. Childhood friends? Lorenza immediately asked, “You’ve known who since you were kids?” Neither Leonardo nor Lucia responded. Lorenza leaned toward Leonardo. “Leonardo? What are you two talking about?” She couldn’t stand not knowing and was determined to get to the bottom of it. She worried that Antonio’s earlier words might have made Leonardo suspicious, which explained her intense curiosity. For the first time, D
