Damien: Pov.

I arrived at Vanessa’s building a few minutes early and sat in the car with the engine running. The street was quiet. A soft wind moved through the trees lining the sidewalk. I checked the time once, then again, before finally turning off the engine and getting out. My hands felt colder than they should have.

She opened the door looking elegant, her hair soft around her face, a small hopeful smile already in place. The kind of smile that expected something good from the evening.

“You look nice,” I said.

“Thank you.” She stepped out and closed the door behind her. “I wasn’t sure what to wear. I didn’t want to overdo it.”

“You didn’t.”

We walked to the car in silence for a few steps. I opened the passenger door for her. She thanked me quietly and slid in. When I got behind the wheel, the air between us already felt careful.

The drive to the restaurant started politely. She asked about work. I gave short, measured answers. She talked a little about a client she had met earlier in the week, describing the meeting with light detail. I listened and nodded at the right moments. Every so often I felt her glance at me, checking if I was present. I kept my eyes on the road and my voice steady. The silence between her sentences felt longer than it should have. I filled it with small comments that meant nothing.

The restaurant was quiet and expensive, the kind of place where people spoke in low voices. Soft lighting. Low music. Dark wood and white tablecloths. A few heads turned when we walked in. Vanessa noticed the attention and seemed comfortable with it. Her posture stayed relaxed. I felt the familiar weight of being watched settle on my shoulders again. It was a weight I had grown used to, but tonight it felt heavier.

We were seated near the window. She smiled across the table, warm and hopeful.

“This is nice,” she said.

“It is.”

The early conversation stayed light. She asked if I had been sleeping better. I said I had. She mentioned a new project at her company and the pressure that came with it. I asked a few questions and let her talk. On the surface everything looked normal. Two people having dinner. Underneath, my mind kept drifting. I watched her speak and felt how far away I still was from the moment. My body was at the table. The rest of me was somewhere else.

After a while her tone softened.

“I’m glad you called,” she said. “I wasn’t sure you would.”

“I meant what I said.”

“I know.” She looked down at her glass for a second before meeting my eyes again. “I never fully stopped caring, Damien. Even after everything. I kept telling myself I had moved on, but some part of me was still waiting.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. The honesty in her voice made the distance in my chest feel sharper. I gave a small nod and reached for my water. The glass felt cold against my fingers. She continued talking about second chances, about how things could be different this time if we were both careful. The more open she became, the more closed off I felt. My thoughts kept slipping backward to another table, another voice, another version of myself that no longer existed. I hated that the comparison came so easily.

At a quieter moment she leaned in slightly. Her hand rested near mine on the table. Then she moved closer, clearly intending to kiss me.

I froze for a second too long.

I didn’t pull away hard. I also didn’t meet her halfway. The moment hung between us, awkward and incomplete. She stopped, her face close to mine, and then slowly leaned back. The air around the table changed. Something small and hopeful in her expression dimmed.

“I’m sorry,” she said softly, her smile becoming more careful.

“You don’t have to apologize.”

But the damage was already there. The rest of the dinner continued politely. She still smiled. She still asked questions. I still answered. Yet something had shifted. I could see it in the way her eyes checked my face more often, searching for a response I wasn’t giving. My own thoughts kept returning to the emptiness I carried, to the life I had destroyed, to the woman whose smile I still couldn’t fully erase. Every time Vanessa laughed softly at something, I felt the contrast more clearly.

When the evening ended I drove her home. The car was quieter than it had been on the way there. The city lights moved past the windows in long streaks. She thanked me at the door, her voice still warm but more restrained. I waited until she went inside before walking back to the car.

I sat in the driver’s seat with the engine off. The city moved around me in soft lights and distant sounds. I unlocked my phone and stared at the screen for a long time. My thumb hovered over an old photo I still hadn’t deleted. Ava, smiling on an ordinary afternoon like nothing could touch us.

I locked the phone again without opening it.

The emptiness settled deeper in my chest.

For the first time that night I wondered if I was trying to build something new while still standing in the ruins of what I had lost.

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    Chapter 38: Get Out

Ava: pov.I stood by the window with my arms crossed and watched them in the living room.Lucas was laughing.Real laughing. The sound went straight into my chest and stayed there. My little boy, the same one who used to hide behind my legs whenever any man came too close, was sitting on the floor showing Damien a drawing from school. Damien was down on one knee, holding the paper carefully like it mattered.“This is me and Mommy at the park,” Lucas said, pointing with his small finger. “And that’s Lily. She was scared of the big slide so I held her hand.”Damien’s mouth moved into a small smile. “You draw really well, buddy.”Lily sat on the couch behind them. She held her favorite doll tight against her chest. She still would not go near him. Every time Damien turned his head in her direction, she looked away and pressed her face into the pillow.Good.At least one of them still remembered.I hated how natural he looked with Lucas. Like he had always been here. Like the last five ye

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 37: THE BLACKWOOD NAME

Vanessa: PovVictoria’s sitting room was designed to impress without effort.Everything in it looked chosen once and never questioned again. Pale furniture. Heavy curtains. A tray of tea already poured before I arrived. This was not a place for casual conversation. It was a place where women were measured.Victoria sat with her back straight and her hands folded loosely in her lap. She did not rise when I entered. She only looked at me once, slowly, from shoes to face, and then nodded toward the chair across from her.“Sit,” she said.I sat.For a moment neither of us spoke. The quiet was intentional. Victoria used silence the way other people used raised voices. It forced you to fill it, or endure it. I chose endurance.“You’ve been doing well in public,” she said at last.“Thank you.”“That was not praise.” Her eyes stayed on me. “It was an observation. Doing well is the minimum now.”I kept my expression calm. “I understand.”Victoria lifted her cup, took a measured sip, then set

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 36: HIS SON

Vanessa: Pov.The room was quiet enough to hear the city under the windows.I sat on the edge of the couch while Nathaniel closed the door behind him. He looked careful, the same way he always did when we met like this. Hidden. Controlled. As if one wrong detail could collapse everything.“You’re late,” I said.“I had to be careful.” He set his phone face down on the table. “Damien asked where I was.”“And?”“Client issue.”I nodded once. Clean answers were useful. They always had been. In Damien’s world, suspicion grew from small inconsistencies before it ever reached the truth. That was why every meeting like this had to look ordinary from the outside and remain airtight on the inside. For a moment neither of us spoke. My hand drifted to my stomach before I forced it back down to my lap. The pregnancy was still early, but it already changed the shape of every decision. Secrets this heavy did not stay manageable forever. They pressed against ordinary moments until even silence felt

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 35: THE MAN WHO WATCHES

Julian: Pov. I stood by the window longer than I needed to.The city moved below me like it always did. Cars. Lights. People who went home thinking the day had ended cleanly. I did not think like that. My days did not end. They stacked. One on top of the other. Quiet. Careful. Aimed.Damien Blackwood.I said the name in my head the way other people said a prayer or a curse. Slowly. Clearly. With full intention. You think this is over. You think your family can take what they want, bury what they damage, and keep walking like the ground never shifted under anyone else. You think a polished life and a public engagement mean the past has been settled. You are wrong.I will make you pay for everything. Not with noise. Not with a scene that gives you time to prepare. I will take my time. I will move in places you do not watch. I will pull at the things you trust until they start to loosen. And when you finally feel it, you will not know where it began. That was the point.I turned away f

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 34: ONE YEAR LATER

Ava: Pov. One year changed more than I expected. The apartment was louder now. Toys lived permanently under the couch and beside the television. Tiny shoes lined the wall near the door. Lily could run from the living room to the kitchen without falling. Lucas followed close behind, slower but determined, always trying to catch up to his sister. Their voices filled the mornings in ways that still surprised me every time I stopped long enough to notice. I stood at the counter cutting fruit while they played near the couch. Short bursts of laughter mixed with small arguments over the same toy. There was a time when mornings felt heavy and uncertain. When every hour was about survival and holding things together with both hands. Now they felt full. Busy. Alive. The difference sat quietly in the room like something I had earned. My phone buzzed with a client message confirming an event for the following weekend. I replied quickly, then checked the rest of the schedule. Bookings sat

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 33: CHECKING IN.

Adrian: Pov.I sat in the car longer than I should have. The lights in Ava’s apartment were still on. I had already told myself twice to leave. Both times my hand stayed on the door handle instead of the keys. The street was quiet. A soft wind moved past the window. After a while I got out, locked the car, and walked toward the building before I could change my mind again. At her door I paused. For a second I almost turned back. Then I knocked. There was a short delay before the door opened. Ava stood there in a simple top and soft pants, hair loosely tied back. Surprise crossed her face first, then something milder. For a moment neither of us spoke. The quiet stretched just long enough to feel noticeable.“Adrian?” she said.“Hey.” My voice came out steadier than I felt. “I just… came to check on you and the twins.”Her expression softened. She stepped aside. “Come in.”The apartment looked lived-in and warm. Toys were scattered near the couch. A small blanket hung over the armrest.
