Grant's POV

"Who let that into my office?" I said.

The silver laptop sat in the middle of my desk on the fifty-second floor, and Owen stood next to it with both hands behind his back. It was early on Friday morning, and he had clearly been waiting for me.

"Please don't touch it, sir."

"I'll touch what's on my own desk."

"It's Juno Whitlock's laptop. It was here when I came in. There's a card."

"Juno's," I said. I didn't like hearing him say Whitlock.

The lid was dented at one corner, and the sil

Juno's POV"Hold the chair still," Grant whispered. "If I fall off this thing, my mother will want to know why I was in your room."I held the chair. He stood on it in his socks, in front of the dresser by my door, with a small screwdriver between his teeth and the old mirror tipped forward against his chest. He had come up the back stairs late in the morning with a shopping bag from an electronics store on Broadway. Margaret had gone to the florist about her party. Sloane was at the office. Agnes was in the kitchen, and I had asked her to bang a pot if anybody started up the back stairs. The bath was running in the little bathroom off my room, with the door wide open, so the microphone in the smoke detector would hear water and nothing else. Before he touched anything, I showed him what I had worked out the night before. From my pillow, my phone's camera showed the purple dot in the smoke detector. From the door, it showed nothing at all. The little light sat beside the lens, and bot

Juno's POV"Left what?" I whispered.Agnes shook her head. "I don't know, Mrs. Juno. She went in with a little box under her arm, smaller than a shoe box. She came out with her hands empty. That's all I saw."Below us, in the kitchen, the cook called for Agnes. Agnes touched my arm once and went down.I stood on the back stairs and made myself breathe. Then I walked up the rest of the way and opened the door of my room like any woman going in to get her laptop.Everything looked the same. The bed was made, just as I had left it before my shower. The red dress box sat on the chair, turned to face the wall. My two suitcases stood in the corner, zipped shut. The laptop was on the little desk by the window, where I had left it.I didn't search. If Sloane had left something in this room, it was something that could see me or hear me, or both. A woman who knew she was being watched would search. A woman who didn't know would pick up her laptop and leave. So I picked up my laptop. And while

  • Too Late, Mr. Ellison: The Wife Who Built His Empire   Chapter 55: Served at Breakfast

Juno's POVRonan had opened my email. He hadn't answered it.On Sunday night, I sat on the bathroom floor again with the water running in the bath and the burner in my hand and read the line under my email for the tenth time.Delivered. Opened one minute later. One minute. Wherever he was, he had picked up his phone as soon as it buzzed. Then he had read my email about the loan on page one hundred and twelve and put the phone down again and sent nothing back. Not a question. Not a thank you. Not one more ugly line.I had spent all of Saturday night on this floor, reading his message. You're in his house. I hope he's worth it.I had wanted to write back so badly that my hands shook. He isn't. He never was. I'm here because his mother has my mother's name in her safe. I had typed the first two words and deleted them. If I told Ronan why I was in this house, Margaret had promised me, the confession would be in the newspaper that same day. And Ronan was not a man who would hear something

Ronan's POVI wanted my message back the second I sent it.Ronan Sayer: You're in his house. I hope he's worth it.There is no way to take back an email once it has gone. The message sat at the top of my sent folder, already on its way to the burner in her pocket.I put the phone face down on my desk and opened the top drawer. The page was in there. Page five of the Calder Street contract, clause eleven circled in red so hard the pen had torn through. On the morning after the party I had swept up the glass from my floor, every piece, and found the page lying in the middle of it with one corner ripped and a footprint on it. Mine. I should have thrown it out with the glass. I had put it in this drawer instead, and I didn't know why, and I hadn't looked at it since.I looked at it now. Then I shut the drawer.Dominic's reports were still open on my laptop. I hadn't answered one of them in two weeks, but I had read every word, most of them twice.Dominic, Halvorsen Security: Sat Dec 12. M

Juno's POV"I don't like ginger," I said.It was the first lie that came into my head, and it was a bad one. I heard how bad it was the second it was out.Grant didn't move. He sat with one hand flat on the tablecloth and looked at me. I had seen that look on his face a hundred times at this table, when a banker told him something he didn't believe."You drank it every day for five years," he said."I was polite for five years. You never noticed that either."Across the table, Sloane put her phone face down beside her plate."Five years of ginger, and not one word of complaint." She smiled at me. "Our Juno. Such lovely manners. Mother will be so hurt."That was the danger. Not Grant. Sloane. Before I stood up with that cup, I had checked the hall door. I had checked Sloane, bent over her screen. I hadn't checked Grant at all, because in all the years we were married, Grant had never once watched what I did with a cup of tea. I had forgotten he had eyes. Now he was watching me, and Slo

  • Too Late, Mr. Ellison: The Wife Who Built His Empire   Chapter 52: The Red Dress

Grant's POVJuno looked at the photo for three seconds. I counted them. Then she turned Sloane's phone face down on the tablecloth and slid it back across the table. "Merry Christmas, Sloane," she said, and picked up her dessert fork.My mother was still telling us which church door to use. Sloane laughed and put her phone away. Nobody else at that table saw anything.I was sitting next to her, and I saw her hand shake. The fork shook all the way to her mouth, and she put it down again without taking a bite.It hit me harder than Sayer's fist had on her stairs. Jealousy. I had never been jealous over my wife. I had never needed to be. She was mine, and while she was mine no other man ever looked at her, because I never let anyone see her. Now she sat at my right hand for the first time in two months, and her hand was shaking over him.I wanted to take Sloane's phone and throw it at the wall. I didn't. Ellisons don't throw things at the dinner table. I cut my pie into small pieces and
