The Anniversary Gift

Callie's POV

Five years ago today, I married Mason Hale in a small white church with my hands shaking so hard I almost dropped the ring. Tonight I wanted him to remember that girl. I wanted him to remember how much she loved him, because she still did.

I started cooking at noon. I made his favorite things, the ones his mother never thought I could get right. Beef Wellington, roasted potatoes with garlic and butter, and the lemon tart he used to eat straight from the pan when we were first married and too poor to own nice plates. I set the table with the good china we got as a wedding gift and had never used. I lit two tall candles and put a small box next to his glass. Inside was a watch with the date of our wedding engraved on the back.

At six, I put on the blue dress he once said he liked. At seven, I checked my phone. There were no messages.

At eight, I sent him a text. "Dinner is ready. Are you on your way?"

He didn't answer.

At nine, I called. It rang five times and went to voicemail. I told myself he was in a meeting because Mason was always in a meeting. Hale Ventures was his whole life, and I had learned a long time ago that I came second. I just hoped that tonight, for one night, I could come first.

The candles burned down to half. The potatoes went cold. I sat at the end of the long table and listened to the clock in the hallway, and every time a car drove past, I sat up straight and looked at the door.

At a quarter to ten, the doorbell rang.

I almost ran. I fixed my hair in the mirror by the door, pulled in a breath, and opened it with a smile already on my face.

It wasn't Mason.

A young woman stood on my porch. She was pretty, with long dark hair and a soft pink coat, and she was holding a white envelope with a red ribbon tied around it. She looked at my dress, then past me at the candles on the table, and she smiled like she knew a joke I didn't.

"You must be Callie," she said.

"I am," I said slowly. "I'm sorry, who are you?"

"My name is Kendra. Kendra Lowe." She held out the envelope with both hands, like it was a present. "Happy anniversary. I brought you a gift."

I didn't take it at first. Something about her voice made my skin go cold. "I don't think we've met," I said. "Do you work with my husband?"

Kendra laughed softly. "You could say that. Please, just open it. I came all this way."

I took the envelope because I didn't know what else to do. I pulled the ribbon loose and opened the flap. Inside was a small black and white photo, the kind they give you at a doctor's office. In the middle of all the gray was a tiny shape, curled up like a bean.

At the top, printed in white letters, was a name. Kendra Lowe. Eleven weeks.

I stared at it. I read the name three times. Then I looked up at her.

"Why would you give me this?" I asked.

"Because it's Mason's," Kendra said. She put one hand on her flat stomach and tilted her head. "I thought you should hear it from me. He's been trying to find the right time to tell you, but Mason is so soft with people. He hates hurting anyone. So I decided to help him."

For a second I couldn't breathe. Then I laughed, because it was the only thing that made sense. "This is a joke," I said. "Did someone pay you to do this? Is this one of his business rivals trying to upset him?"

"It's not a joke, Callie."

"My husband would never do this to me," I said. My voice was shaking now, and I hated it. "You don't know him. He works until midnight every night. He doesn't have time for anyone, not even me."

Kendra's smile grew wider. "Where do you think he is right now?"

I didn't answer her. I couldn't.

"He's at the Grand Marlowe Hotel," she said. "Room 1408. He gets a suite there every Thursday. He told me to meet him there tonight after I came here." She stepped closer and lowered her voice like she was being kind. "If you don't believe me, come with me. We'll go together. You can ask him yourself."

"I'm not going anywhere with you," I said.

"Then sit here and wait," Kendra said, and she looked past me again at the table. "Wait with your cold dinner, like you've been waiting for five years. He won't come home tonight, Callie. He never planned to."

I wanted to slam the door in her face. I wanted to call Mason and hear him laugh and tell me she was crazy. Instead, I looked at the photo in my hand. Eleven weeks. Eleven weeks ago, Mason had gone on a business trip and come back smelling like a perfume I didn't wear. I had told myself it was nothing. I had told myself a lot of things.

"Fine," I said. "Let's go."

Kendra's car was parked at the end of our drive, a white sports car with the engine still running. She got in behind the wheel. I sat in the passenger seat, still in my blue dress, still holding the photo so tight that the corner bent.

She drove fast. The rain had started while we were inside, and the roads were black and wet under the street lights. Kendra hummed along to the radio like this was a fun night out with a friend.

I looked out the window and thought about our wedding day. Mason had cried when I walked down the aisle. His best friend Theo had handed him a tissue and laughed at him. I held on to that memory now like it could save me, because if that man had cried for me once, maybe he couldn't do this. Maybe she was lying.

"You know, he never talks about you," she said. "Not once. When I asked him if he loved you, he said you were easy. That's the word he used. Easy. You cook, you clean, and you wait. You never ask for anything."

"Stop talking," I said.

"I'm just being honest with you."

"I said, 'Stop talking!'"

She turned to look at me and smiled. She didn't look at the road. She didn't see the red light, and she didn't see the truck.

I did. I screamed her name, and then the whole world turned white.

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    His Table

Callie's POVI called Mason that night. It was the first time I had called him since the hospital. He answered on the fourth ring. I could hear a TV in the background and Kendra laughing at something."What?" he said."Did you tell her the name?" I asked. "Noah. Did you tell Kendra the name I picked on our honeymoon?"There was a long silence. Then the TV went quiet, like he had walked into another room."Yes," he said. "I told her. It's a good name."I held the phone so tight that my fingers hurt. "That was my father's name, Mason. That was supposed to be our son.""We never had a son," he said. His voice was flat and cold. "Five years, Callie, and you never gave me a child. Kendra did it in five months. So I don't think you get to keep the name."I couldn't speak. I just sat there on the edge of the bed in the dark."And stop going around town selling things," he went on. "People are talking. It makes me look bad."Then he hung up.I didn't sleep. I lay awake and stared at the ceili

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale     Declined

Callie's POVThe video went up at nine in the morning. By ten, two million people had watched it.Kendra sat on a white couch in soft light, with no makeup on and her hair pulled back like a tired young mother. One hand rested on her stomach. Her eyes were wet."I didn't want to say anything," she said to the camera, and her voice shook. "But I can't stay quiet anymore. Someone made a fake recording of my voice. They used a computer to make it sound like I paid a poor woman to lie in court. I would never do that. I'm just a girl who fell in love, and now I'm being attacked every single day while I'm carrying a baby." She wiped her eyes. "Please, just leave us alone."Under the video, there was a short statement from Hale Ventures.Mr. Hale believes the recording is fake and stands fully behind Ms. Lowe.I read the comments until my hands went cold. They called me a witch. They called me sick. They said I paid Paula myself and that I used my rich boyfriend's money to do it.Margaret ca

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    Sunday Lunch

Mason's POVFor five years, Sunday lunch at my mother's house had been the easiest part of my week.I never had to think about it. I would arrive at one o'clock, and the table would already be set. There would be roast chicken with lemon and thyme, my mother's favorite, and the little potato pie that Callie only made on Sundays. Callie would kiss my cheek at the door and take my coat. My mother would be laughing with her in the kitchen. I would sit down, eat, check my phone, and leave by three.I never once asked who cooked it.This Sunday, Kendra and I arrived at a quarter past one because she changed her outfit three times. She came up the path in white heels and a short cream dress, holding a paper bag from a deli downtown."Your mother will love this," she said. "It's the most expensive salad they have."My mother opened the door before we rang. She smiled at Kendra, but her eyes went past us, down the path, to the street."Where's Callie?" she asked.I had my answer ready. "She's

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    The Witness

Callie's POVMargaret's office was on the top floor of an old brick building downtown. There were no plants and no pictures on the walls, only books and a long wooden table and a view of the whole city. She put a single page in front of me."The witness is Paula Greer," she said. "She says she cleaned your house three days a week for the past three years. She says Theo came to the house many afternoons while Mason was at work, and that she saw the two of you together in ways that made her very uncomfortable."I read the name twice. I couldn't breathe."Paula?" I said. "Paula wouldn't do this. She was there the day I found out my mother's lace had been ruined in the wash, and she sat with me in the laundry room and helped me fix it. She brought me soup when I had the flu. She loved me.""People do strange things when someone puts enough money on the table," Margaret said.Theo was standing by the window with his arms crossed. "I have never once been in that house without Mason," he sai

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    The Sapphire Ring

Callie's POVI didn't sleep again that night. I sat on the couch with the lamp on and looked at the photo of Kendra in my wedding dress until the screen went dark in my hand.I didn't reply. I knew that was what she wanted. She wanted me to cry, to call her names, and to send her something she could show Mason so he could say, look how crazy she is.At seven in the morning, my phone buzzed again. This time it was a close photo of a woman's hand resting on Mason's chest. On her finger was a ring. A dark blue sapphire, set in old gold, with two tiny diamonds on each side.He picked this one out just for me, the message said. Did he ever do that for you?I stared at that ring, and my whole body went cold.I knew it. I knew every tiny scratch on it. It was not a ring Mason had picked out for anyone. It belonged to Diane's mother. On the day of my wedding, Diane had taken it off her own finger and pressed it into my hand and said, "This is for the daughter of this family." I had kept it in

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    It Fits Me Better

Callie's POVBy ten o'clock, the story was everywhere. My phone would not stop buzzing. I turned it face down on the couch, but I could still hear it, over and over, like a fly hitting a window. When it finally went quiet for a minute, I picked it up and saw a name I had not expected.Diane Hale. Mason's mother. For five years, Diane had been the closest thing I had to a mother since my own died. Every Sunday I cooked lunch at her house. When she had her knee surgery, I stayed with her for three weeks. She used to hold my face in her hands and tell me I was the daughter she never had.I answered with a shaking hand. "Mother?""Don't call me that," she said. Her voice was ice. "I saw the pictures, Callie. The whole city saw them. My son has been through hell this week, and you were already running to his best friend.""Mother, please listen to me. It isn't what it looks like.""I loved you like my own blood," she said, and her voice broke. "I will never forgive you for this. Never."Sh
