Callie's POV

I must have made a sound, because Theo turned around.

He saw me standing at the back door on my crutches, and for one second his face looked like a boy who had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Then he said something quiet into the phone and hung up.

"Callie," he said. "How long have you been there?"

"Long enough to hear you cancel my husband's meeting with the president of Meridian Group," I said. "Theo, what was that?"

He put the phone down on the kitchen counter and r

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    The Staircase

Callie's POVThe whole ballroom watched Kendra come down those stairs. Nobody spoke. The music kept playing, soft and silly, like it hadn't noticed anything was wrong.Mason's arm went stiff under my hand."I didn't invite her," he said quietly. "Callie, I swear. I told her to stay home.""She's wearing my mother's lace," I said. My voice sounded very far away. "The pieces you let her keep."He looked at the sleeves of her gown, and I watched him finally understand what he was seeing. His face went gray.Kendra reached the bottom of the stairs and walked straight across the dance floor toward us. People stepped out of her way. A few of them lifted their phones. She stopped in front of me, close enough that I could smell her perfume, and smiled like we were old friends."You look nice, sweetie," she said. "Blue was always your color. White is mine.""Take it off," I said quietly. "Those sleeves belonged to my mother.""Your mother's dead," Kendra said, still smiling. "She doesn't need

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    One Last Time

Callie's POVI read Mason's message four times. Then I showed it to Jules. She stopped laughing at once. "Absolutely not," she said. "He wants to walk into that ballroom with you on his arm so the whole city thinks he's a good husband. He wants to use you one more time.""I know," I said."So you'll say no."I looked at the message again. I'll sign the divorce papers. Five weeks ago, I would have done anything just to hear those words from him. Now they were the only thing standing between me and the rest of my life."I'm going to call Margaret," I said.Margaret listened without saying a word. When I finished, she was quiet for a moment, and I could almost hear her thinking."It's not a bad trade," she said finally. "One evening of smiling for cameras, and you're free months before any judge would free you. But we do it my way. Everything in writing. He signs the papers before the gala, and I hold them. The moment the night is over, I file them. If he breaks one rule, I file anyway a

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    No Spending Limit

Callie's POVMeridian Tower was the tallest building in the city. I had driven past it a thousand times and never once gone inside. The man from head office walked me through the glass doors with the police officer one step behind us. People in the lobby turned to stare at the woman on crutches being brought in like a criminal. I kept my chin up, but my heart was pounding so hard I could hear it.I called Theo from the elevator. It rang and rang. No answer. The meeting room was on the thirtieth floor. It had a long black table and a wall of windows, and it was already full.Kendra was sitting at the far end with Brittany Cole beside her. Next to them was a young man with a camera and a little microphone clipped to his shirt. And standing by the window, in a gray suit, looking very uncomfortable, was Mason."What is he doing here?" I asked."Kendra called me," Mason said. He didn't quite look at me. "She said you were being arrested.""I said she might be," Kendra said sweetly. She put

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    Office of the President

Callie's POVI sat on the edge of the bed in the guest house with the silver box on my knees and the receipt in my hand until the sun went down.Office of the President.I thought about every strange thing from the last few weeks. Margaret Shaw, who never lost a case, taking mine for a favor. Dr. Price fixing Danny's heart in two days. Marco and his garden table. The detective calling Theo, sir. The men in dark suits nodding at him like he was their boss. And now a card that paid two hundred and eighty thousand dollars in one second. When Theo's kitchen light came on across the garden, I picked up my crutches and went over.He was standing at the stove in an old gray sweater, stirring a pot of soup. He smiled when he saw me in the doorway. Then he saw the receipt in my hand, and the smile slowly went away."I bought a dress today," I said."Jules told me," he said. "She sent me a video of Kendra's face. I've watched it nine times.""It cost two hundred and eighty thousand dollars, The

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    The Black Card

Callie's POVBy eight o'clock in the morning, the story was on every news site in the city. Hale Ventures Money Frees Man Arrested at Estranged Wife's Home.Mason called at nine. For once, I picked up."I didn't pay that bail," he said before I could speak. He sounded like he hadn't slept either. "Callie, I swear to you. I don't even know who Rafe Dunn is.""He's Kendra's ex-boyfriend," I said. "They lived together until four months ago."The line went quiet. I could hear him breathing."I know," he said finally. "She told me this morning. She was crying so hard she could barely talk. She says he's been stalking her for months, and she was too scared to tell anyone. She thinks he went after you to hurt her." He let out a long breath. "She's terrified, Callie. She hasn't stopped shaking."I closed my eyes. Of course she had a story ready. She always did."And the money?" I asked. "Two hundred thousand dollars out of your company account. Was that Rafe too?""My bank is looking into it,

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale     She Told Me You'd Be Asleep

Callie's POVI didn't hear my phone ring. It was in the bottom of my work bag, under the new sketchbook, on silent. Jules and I had been working late at the Whitmore Grand, choosing fabric for the chairs, and by the time I saw the missed call, it was almost nine o'clock at night. There was one voicemail. From Diane.I almost didn't play it. Then I pressed the button and held the phone to my ear."Callie, it's me." Her voice was shaking so hard I barely knew it. "Please listen. Don't go home tonight. Don't go to that guest house. I heard her on the phone. Kendra. She told a man called Rafe to come tonight after Theo goes to bed. She said to make it look like an accident." There was a long breath, like she was crying. "I'm so sorry, my girl. I'm so sorry I didn't believe you. Please call me back."I sat down on one of the old restaurant chairs because my legs wouldn't hold me.Jules took the phone out of my hand and listened. When she was done, she put it down on the table very slowly a
