THE TRIUMPH OF THE DAMNED

PATRICK POV

The subterranean corridors of the Silverfang Keep smelled of damp limestone, ancient moss, and the metallic tang of dried blood.

To the rest of the pack, these deep catacombs were known as the Forbidden Vaults—a dark, forgotten labyrinth built into the roots of the mountain where the kingdom tossed its worst traitors, rogue Alpha challenge-seekers, and political abominations. No one stepped down these stone staircases without explicit permission. No light touched these halls except for the flickering, amber glow of resin torches mounted every fifty paces along the damp stone walls.

I walked down the spiraling stairs with light, easy strides. My leather boots clicked against the slick flags in a steady, triumphant rhythm.

For years, my heart had been a hollowed-out cavern, an empty vessel throbbing with the phantom agony of a severed bond. Every sunrise since the border incident had felt like a slow, agonizing suffocation. I had lived as a ghost in my own palace—watching the throne room where I had once publicly humiliated her, sleeping in the chambers where I had paced back and forth while she walked into the arms of High Alpha Adrian.

I had been forced to live with the unbearable truth that I had thrown away a White Healer, a Queen, a legend. I had dropped to my knees in the mud of Stormfang’s courtyard, weeping like a broken thrall, begging for a forgiveness that never came.

But today... today, the universe had finally repented.

A cruel, euphoric smile stretched across my face as I reached the bottom of the spiraling staircase. I adjusted the heavy velvet collar of my obsidian mantle, my green eyes burning in the dim torchlight with an unholy, feverish glint.

"My Prince," the two elite vanguards guarding the heavy iron archway stammered, bowing their heads low, their hands pressed against their sword hilts. "We were not expecting you in the lower cellars."

"Open the high-security ward," I commanded, my voice carrying a smooth, purring cadence that held no trace of the mad rages that usually consumed me. "I have news for our long-term guests."

The guards didn't dare hesitate. They inserted two massive bronze keys into the heavy iron gate, the rusty lock screeching in protest as the reinforced door swung inward.

I stepped through the threshold, my eyes locking onto the dark, sunken iron cages built directly into the bedrock of the vault.

Inside the central cage, three figures sat in the gloom, huddled around a small wooden bench. They were dressed in tattered gray prisoner robes, their hands and ankles bound by silver-lined iron shackles that kept their wolf spirits suppressed to a mere flicker.

My former Beta—Lydia’s father, a broken, white-bearded shell of a man—lifted his sunken eyes. Beside him, his wife, Lydia’s mother, pulled her threadbare shawl closer around her withered shoulders. And in the corner, leaning against the cold granite wall with her knees drawn up to her chest, sat Seraphina.

Years of dark cell imprisonment had stolen Seraphina’s youthful, gilded beauty. Her golden hair was now dull, matted, and streak-marked with gray, hanging in dirty, tangled tendrils around her hollow cheeks. The sweet, pastel-wearing girl who had cheered when her sister’s hair was shorn off with rusty shears was gone, replaced by a bitter, sharp-eyed phantom living in the dark.

"Patrick," Seraphina rasped, her voice dry as dead autumn leaves. She didn't bow. She didn't tremble. She simply stared at me through the rusted iron bars, a cold sneer touching her cracked lips. "To what do we owe the rare honor of the King descending into the pit? Has the guilt finally driven you so mad that you came down here to cut our throats yourself?"

I stopped directly in front of their cage, clasping my hands comfortably behind my back. I looked at the three of them—the broken Beta family who had helped me burn down my own youth out of spite, greed, and envy.

"On the contrary, Seraphina," I chuckled low, the dark sound echoing off the vaulted stone ceiling. "I have never been more lucid in my life. I came down here to share a grand revelation with my loyal court."

Lydia’s father spat onto the damp stone floor. "We are not your court, you mad dog. You threw us down here years ago after you slaughtered your way into Stormfang's supply rooms. You stole our lands, you executed our kin, and you left us to rot while you searched for ghosts in the woods."

"Because you were incompetent parasites," I replied calmly, my green eyes flashing with a sudden, lethal sharpness. "You manufactured black-vein poison in your private lab, sold it to Shadowclaw, and ruined my diplomatic leverage at the border. You made me look like a fool in front of both armies while Lydia stood under Stormfang’s banner in her green robes, looking down at me like I was dirt!"

"She was dirt!" Lydia’s mother hissed, her trembling, scarred hands gripping the cell bars with sudden, vicious hatred. "She was a fat, useless, ungrateful useless Daughter! We gave her life, and she ruined our standing in Silverfang! She made us a laughingstock!"

"And yet... she was the only woman who ever mattered," I whispered, stepping closer until my face was inches from the iron bars. A dark, terrifying ecstasy flared in my chest. "For years, I thought I had lost her forever. For years, I kept her chained in the keystone vault, hoping her spirit would break, hoping she would look at me with the same eyes she used to look at Adrian. But she never did. Her heart remained buried in the grave with High Alpha Adrian."

I paused, leaning my head back, letting out a long, theatrical sigh of absolute satisfaction.

"So I stopped asking for the mother," I grinned, my teeth gleaming like white daggers in the torchlight. "And I took the daughter."

The silence that fell over the dark vault was absolute.

Seraphina’s eyes widened slightly, her posture stiffening against the icy granite wall. Lydia’s father slowly stood up from the wooden bench, his chains rattling in the gloom.

"What... what did you say?" Seraphina whispered.

"Alora," I purred, savoring the taste of the name on my tongue. "The daughter of High Alpha Adrian and White Healer Lydia. The secret twin. The girl they smuggled out through the rear chute years ago while the fortress burned. I found her. My elite vanguards pulled her from her hiding place in Oakridge, brought her across the border in chains, and locked her in the high eastern tower."

I took a deep breath, beating my hand over my chest, feeling my heart hammer with dark, manic joy.

"She looks exactly like her," I rasped, my green eyes fixed on Seraphina's pale face. "She has her mother's skin, her mother's sharp jaw, her mother's sacred, origin-light. When I looked into her eyes, it was as if time itself had collapsed. The Goddess has finally given me my second chance. Even if Lydia’s mind is broken beyond reach in the keystone vault... her bloodline will sit on my throne."

"You are insane," Lydia’s father choked out, stepping back in horror. "She is Adrian’s blood! She is a High Alpha’s daughter! She will burn your palace to the ground!"

"She will do no such thing," I barked, a harsh laugh bursting from my throat. "She is isolated. Her brother—that pathetic, brute boy Alexander is dead, bleeding out in the mud of Oakridge where my scouts cut him down. She has no army. She has no protectors. In thirty days, when the Blood Moon rise, I will force the royal crown onto her head, bind her to my altar, and claim her as my Luna."

I looked at the three of them, my smile widening until it turned into a feral, monstrous grin.

"And I want you there to witness it," I declared softly.

Lydia’s mother gasped, clutching her throat. "What?"

"I am releasing you," I announced, turning to the guard commander behind me. "Unchain them. Clean them up. Give them dark silk garments fit for a disgraced Beta household, and assign four heavy guards to watch their quarters. In thirty days, on the night of the royal wedding, my noble Beta parents and my dear sister-in-law Seraphina will sit in the front row of the grand hall. You will watch me take what should have been mine years ago. You will watch the daughter of Lydia Blackthorn bow before my throne."

The guard commander immediately stepped forward with the cell keys, unlocking the heavy iron door of the cage. The rusted iron shackles fell to the flagstone floor with three loud, metallic clangs.

Lydia’s father collapsed onto his knees, rubbing his raw, bleeding wrists, weeping in disbelieving gratitude. Lydia’s mother dropped to her hands and knees, kissing the hem of my mantle in desperate, cowardly submission.

Only Seraphina remained standing.

She slowly walked out of the open cell, her gray-streaked, matted hair falling around her gaunt face. She did not kneel. She did not weep. She looked down at her parents groveling on the cold stone, then lifted her dark, hollow eyes to meet mine.

A slow, terrifying smile crept across Seraphina’s face—a smile devoid of warmth, filled with years of festering, venomous malice.

"So..." Seraphina cooed raspy, her voice laced with dark, cruel amusement. "The battle actually passes down to the young generation."

She took a slow step toward me, her eyes flaring with the same toxic envy that had made her take shears to her sister’s hair years ago.

"Too bad, Lydia," Seraphina whispered, a dry, raspy chuckle bubbling up from her chest as she looked toward the ceiling, as if speaking directly to her captive sister three floors below. "You were always a coward. You always ran. You ran into the woods, you ran to Stormfang, and you let yourself be chained in the dark."

Seraphina turned back to me, her dark smile turning lethal, her eyes burning with cold anticipation.

"Now... let us see what sense your little daughter inherited from you."

The crimson wax seals marking the border posts were all in place. Every piece on the board was under my absolute control.Yet, a subtle, irritating prickle lingered at the base of my neck—an uninvited phantom itch that I couldn't quite shake.A sharp, hurried knock rattled the heavy oak doors of my study."Enter," I commanded coldly, not taking my eyes off the border map.The heavy doors swung open, and Lord Sterling rushed into the room, his long robes rustling against the flagstones, his pale face slick wit

PATRICK POVThe autumn wind carried the heavy scent of roasted meat, spiced wine, and the metallic tang of sweat and iron across the grand training court of Silverfang.I sat back in my carved obsidian throne on the high marble balcony overlooking the yard, nursing a silver goblet of aged spiced wine. Below, dozens of elite warriors clashed broadswords and iron-studded shields, their harsh grunts and the loud ringing of steel echoing against the granite walls of the inner keep. Lord Sterling stood at my shoulder, clutching a thick parchment ledger containing the names of fresh mercenaries and border recruits brought in from the northern ridges.None of them impressed me. They fought like clumsy bears—heavy, predictable, and devoid of true lethality."My Prince," Sterling murmured, leaning down slightly. "The guard rotations for the eastern wing have been doubled as you ordered. However, the guard commander remains uneasy. The girl’s presence in the high tower is causing quiet unrest a

A heady, intoxicating warmth roared through my veins—a sensation I hadn't felt in years. For so long, my existence had been defined by a quiet, gnawing failure.
