LYDIA POV

The bell above the watchtower tolled relentlessly, its brass rhythm pounding against my skull like a war drum.

Outside the courtyard, the news was spreading like wildfire: fifty of Silverfang’s elite warriors, led by Prince Patrick Silversson, were massing at the eastern border, threatening to burn our border towns to ashes if I was not handed over immediately. But inside the stone gates of Stormfang’s healing hall, a far deadlier war had already begun.

"Move them to the old isolation cellars! Lock the heavy iron doors!"

Elder Marcus, the senior physician who had served Stormfang for thirty years, stood in the center of the main ward, shouting orders at the trembling junior omegas. He was a tall, lean wolf with silvering hair and eyes full of panic. "They are spewing black blood! If this fever touches the upper ranks, the pack is finished! Burn their clothes, lock them in the dark, and let nature take its course!"

"Touch them and you will answer to me!" My voice sliced through the chaos, clear, sharp, and backed by a sudden surge of commanding presence that made two guards freeze in their tracks.

I stroled into the ward, my deep green Head Healer’s robes swishing against the stone floor, the silver embroidery on my cuffs catching the light. Behind me, Maya and three other young assistants carried armfuls of fresh silver-salve, boiled bandages, and crushed moon-lily leaves.

Elder Marcus turned on his heel, his face flushing dark red with anger. "You! You are a discarded Beta’s daughter from Silverfang! You have been here for two weeks, and now you dare countermand my orders during a biological crisis?"

"I countermand your orders because your orders are murder, Marcus," I said, walking straight up to him without flinching. "Locking plague patients in a damp cellar with no ventilation will kill them within six hours. This is not a natural fever. This is an engineered Shadowclaw toxin—black-vein disease. It suppresses the wolf's immune system and rots the internal organs from the heart outward."

Marcus sneered, his eyes dropping to my roughly trimmed dark hair. "And what would a fat, discarded girl know of Shadowclaw warfare? You got lucky with one guard! You cannot cure a plague with party tricks! Alpha Adrian threw away forty thousand gold pieces on a fluke, but I will not let you sacrifice our people to hide your incompetence!"

The ward went dead silent. Dozens of eyes—sick omegas, panicked nurses, and stationed guards—shifted between us. A month ago, back in Silverfang, those words would have crushed me. The insult, the reminder of my weight, the dismissal of my worth would have sent me shrinking into the shadow of the nearest wall, weeping while my sister laughed.

I didn't shrink. I took a step closer, tilting my head up to meet his furious glare.

"I am Head Healer Blackthorn, appointed directly by Alpha Adrian," I said, my tone ice-cold and unshakeable. "You hold no authority over these halls. If you step between me and my patients again, I will have the guards throw you into isolation for obstructing emergency care. Now, get out of my way or pick up a basin of clean water."

Marcus gasped, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish. He looked around the room, expecting someone to support him, but the junior healers had already moved to my side. Maya set down her armful of supplies, standing firmly behind me. Marcus let out a harsh, defeated growl, turned on his heel, and stormed out of the hall, slamming the double doors behind him.

"Maya," I commanded, turning toward the rows of cots. "Separate the patients by symptom progression. Stage one goes near the eastern windows for fresh air. Stage two, with black veins reaching the jaw, stays in the center. Bring me the silver-salve and moon-lily concentrate immediately."

"Yes, Head Healer!" Maya called out, her voice filled with newfound confidence as the team scrambled to execute my orders.

I turned to the first cot.

A young boy, no older than ten, lay writhing under a stained blanket. The black veins on his neck were thick and raised like corded rope, pushing toward his jaw. His skin was burning hot to the touch, his breathing a wet, ragged gasp. Dark blood oozed from the corners of his lips.

I knelt beside him, rolling up my green sleeves.

‘You can do this’, I told myself, taking a deep, steadying breath. You are no longer the girl in the basement. You are the White Healer.

I pressed my palms flat against the boy's chest.

"Hold him," I told the nurse beside me.

I closed my eyes and reached into the center of my spirit. The hollow scar where the mate bond used to be throbbed with a dull ache, but right beside it, the white fire roared to life. It wasn't just a flicker this time; it was a fountain of liquid light, hot, pure, and hungry to restore what had been broken.

White light erupted from my hands, spilling over the boy's chest and illuminating the dark hall.

A gasp went up from the surrounding healers.

The light sank into his skin like warm oil. Beneath his flesh, I could feel the microscopic battle waging—the shadow-toxin eating away at his blood cells, resisting the light with a greasy, dark magic. I gritted my teeth, pushing more of my energy into his body.

‘Purify,’ I commanded the light in my mind. ‘Cleanse it. Out.’

The black veins on his neck flared, then began to recede, shrinking back down his chest like melting shadows. The heat in his skin broke, replaced by a cool, healthy sweat. The boy let out a long, quiet sigh and his thrashing stopped, his breathing turning deep and peaceful.

I pulled my hands back, trembling slightly. Sweat dripped down my temple, stinging my eyes.

"One," I whispered, wiping my forehead with the back of my sleeve before immediately standing up and moving to the next cot. "Next patient."

For four straight hours, I moved from cot to cot.

I didn't stop to rest. I didn't stop to drink water. Every time the white light poured from my hands, a piece of my own stamina was ripped away, leaving my muscles leaden and my mind dizzy. The wound at my side—the pale scar left by the poisoned arrow—pulled and burned with a sharp, throbbing pain, but I forced myself forward.

Twelve wolves were purified. Twenty wolves stabilized. The air in the ward, once heavy with the stench of decay and death, began to clear.

Just as I finished stabilizing an elder she-wolf, the heavy doors of the healing ward burst open once again.

Alpha Adrian stepped inside, accompanied by his top military lieutenant, Commander —a giant of a wolf whose muscular frame usually commanded awe. But now, Commander was leaning heavily on Adrian’s shoulder, his head drooping, black veins creeping furiously up his neck, already reaching his eye socket.

"Lydia!" Adrian’s voice cracked through the room, laced with rare, raw urgency. "He collapsed at the border post. The toxin hit him harder than the rest—he was sprayed with a concentrated dose from a hidden trap."

"Bring him here! Quickly!" I shouted, clearing a large wooden table in the center of the hall.

Adrian and two guards hoisted the massive commander onto the table. He was already in convulsions, his eyes rolled back, black blood spilling from his nose and mouth. The poison had nearly reached his brain.

"He doesn't have minutes," Adrian said, his gray eyes locking onto mine, dark with concern—not just for his lieutenant, but for me. He took in my pale face, my shaking hands, and the dark circles under my eyes. "Lydia... you look like you're about to faint. Can you do this?"

"I have to," I snapped, placing both hands squarely over the Commander heart.

I didn't just summon the white light—I forced it out.

A blinding column of brilliant white fire erupted from my palms, so intense that Adrian had to step back and cover his face. The power roared through my veins like a freight train, tearing through my body, draining my spirit to the very bone.

The dark magic inside The commander fought back violently. It screeched against my light, a foul, sentient corruption that tried to push its way into my own fingertips. I gritted my teeth so hard I tasted copper in my mouth.

"You... will... not... take... him!" I screamed, pouring every last drop of my strength into the light.

With a final, deafening crackle of pure energy, the shadow-toxin broke. The black veins on his face dissolved instantly. The commander let out a massive breath, his eyes opening in dazed awareness as the fever broke entirely.

The room erupted into cheers from the junior healers and guards. He blinked, looking up at the ceiling in shock. "Alpha...? What... what happened?"

"Save your breath, Commander," Adrian said, relief washing over his hard features. "Head Healer Blackthorn just pulled you back from the grave."

I tried to smile, tried to stand tall, but the light died out from my hands, leaving me utterly hollowed out. My knees buckled.

Adrian caught me before I hit the floor, lifting me easily into his arms, holding me against his broad chest.

"I've got you," he whispered, his voice low and steady beside my ear. "You did it, Lydia. You saved them all."

I rested my head against his shoulder, my breathing shallow and exhausted. My eyes drifted down to the basin of black blood and purified toxins that Maya had wiped from Vance’s chest.

Something caught my eye in the liquid.

Floating on top of the black residue was a faint, shimmering purple film—a synthetic chemical binder used exclusively in high-level potion crafting. A binder I recognized instantly. I had spent seven years cleaning the glass beakers in my father's private Beta laboratory in Silverfang.

It was my mother’s signature formula.

My breath hitched in my throat as the horrible truth settled into my chest. The Shadowclaw plague hadn't just been released near our borders.

The poison had been manufactured inside my family's own home—and sold to our worst enemies.

"Adrian..." I gasped, grabbing his collar with trembling fingers as darkness encroached on the edges of my vision. "It's... it's Silverfang... My family... they made it..."

Before Adrian could answer, a loud explosion rocked the outer fortress gates, shaking the stone floor beneath us, followed by the terrifying blare of a war horn.

Patrick had breached the outer boundary.

LYDIA POVThe silence that fell over the central courtyard was heavier than the granite vault we had just escaped. The six-eyed shadow crow remained perched on the marble railing, its hollow, dark gaze fixed unblinkingly on me. On the floor before us, the pool of dark, burning wax sputtered, the glowing script in ancient High Imperial fading slowly into the stone like dying embers."The seals on the three other Primordial Horrors... have just shattered."Valerius’s whispered words hung in the mountain breeze, freezing the blood in my veins.Beside me, the celebratory cheers of the crowd died instantly. The surrounding Alphas exchanged terrified, panicked glances, the triumph of purging the Shadow King evaporating in a single heartbeat."That's impossible," Alpha Roderick gritted out, stepping up the dais steps, his hand gripping his sword hilt.
