Elena woke the next morning feeling strangely peaceful.

For the first time in weeks, she hadn't dreamed about her past. She hadn't woken up wondering what she had forgotten or what secret would surface next. She had simply slept — deep, dreamless, and whole. Somehow, that felt like a gift.

She sat up and looked around her room. The wooden box was still on the table, her father's letter safely inside. She smiled faintly. She wasn't ready to forget the past, but she was beginning to understand that she didn't have to live inside it either.

After getting dressed, Elena walked downstairs. Damian was already there, standing near the windows with a cup of coffee in his hand, sifting through a few documents. When he heard her footsteps, he looked up, and his eyes softened immediately.

"Good morning."

"Good morning."

"You slept."

Elena smiled. "How did you know?"

"You don't look exhausted."

She laughed. "Is that your way of saying I usually look terrible?"

"That's exactly what I'm saying."

She stared at him. "Damian."

He laughed. "Relax. You're beautiful."

Elena froze. He seemed to realize what he had said at the same moment, and for a second, neither of them spoke. Then Elena looked away, trying to hide the smile forming on her face.

"You say things too easily."

"I only say what I mean."

Her cheeks warmed. Mrs. Harper walked into the room at the worst possible moment, looked between them, and smiled.

"Breakfast is ready."

Elena hurried toward the dining table. Damian followed, looking far too amused. Mrs. Harper shook her head and said nothing — but the smile on her face said enough.

After breakfast, Elena decided to go to the office. She had barely stepped into the building when Damian's assistant approached her.

"Miss Elena."

"Yes?"

"Mr. Blackwood asked me to give you this." He handed her a folder.

She opened it. Inside were several documents. "What are these?"

"Your new project."

Elena looked up. "My project?"

"He said you wanted something challenging."

A smile spread across her face. "I did." She hugged the folder to her chest. "Thank you."

As she walked toward her office, she couldn't stop smiling. Damian had listened. He wasn't simply giving her a position because he wanted to keep her close — he was giving her something to prove herself with. And that mattered more than she could say.

Later that morning, Elena sat across from Damian in his office and placed the folder on his desk.

"You really think I can handle this?"

"I wouldn't have given it to you if I didn't."

"It's a major project."

"I know."

"There are experienced people who could handle it."

"There's also you."

She looked at him. "You have more faith in me than I have in myself."

"Then borrow some of mine until you find your own."

Her heart skipped. She smiled. "That's a dangerous thing to say to a woman."

"Why?"

"Because I might start believing you."

Damian leaned back in his chair. "I hope you do."

The room suddenly felt quieter. Elena looked away. There was something happening between them — something neither had spoken about, but neither seemed willing to stop.

Across the city, Adrian's morning was far less peaceful. He had received the Blackwood documents but hadn't even opened them. Instead, he sat staring at an old photograph of Elena — not the Elena he had seen recently, but the Elena from years ago. The woman who used to wait for him. The woman who would sit quietly beside him while he worked. The woman who used to smile whenever he came home.

He remembered how often he had ignored that smile. How many times she had asked him to spend time with her. How many times he had chosen work instead.

And now she had stopped waiting.

Adrian's jaw tightened. His assistant knocked.

"Sir?"

"Come in."

"You have a meeting in twenty minutes."

"Cancel it."

"Sir?"

"I said cancel it."

His assistant hesitated. "Is everything alright?"

Adrian looked at the photograph. "No." But he didn't explain.

At Vanessa's apartment, the atmosphere was entirely different. She had barely slept. The anonymous messages had continued through the night. She blocked one number; another appeared. She blocked that one too.

Then her phone rang. Unknown number. She stared at it and didn't answer. It stopped. A few seconds later, a message appeared: *You can't hide forever.*

Vanessa's hands trembled. She threw the phone onto the sofa. "Who are you?"

No answer came. She paced the room. The pregnancy strip had been her idea — she'd planted it hoping Adrian would believe Elena was hiding something. She hadn't expected anyone else to find out. She had been careful. Very careful.

So who knew? And what did they want?

Her phone buzzed again. She hesitated before looking. *I'm not interested in exposing you. I want something else.*

She typed: *What?*

The reply came: *You'll find out soon.*

Her heart pounded. She deleted the conversation immediately, but this time she knew she couldn't simply ignore it. Someone was threatening her, and she had no idea how much they knew.

That afternoon, Elena finished her first presentation for the project and walked into Damian's office carrying several documents.

"I think I'm done."

He looked up. "Already?"

"You sound surprised."

"I am."

She placed the documents in front of him. "Don't judge me before you read them."

Damian picked up the first page and read in silence. Elena watched him. After a few seconds, he looked up.

"This is good."

"Just good?"

"Very good."

She smiled. "I'll accept that."

Damian stood. "You should be proud of yourself."

"I am."

He walked around the desk. "Are you?"

She looked at him. "Yes."

"Good." He stopped in front of her. "Because you should be."

Elena's heart began beating faster. She didn't move. Neither did he. For a moment, they stood only inches apart. Damian's eyes dropped briefly to her lips. Elena noticed, and her breath caught.

Then his phone rang.

They both stepped back. Damian looked at the screen, and his expression changed immediately.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer. He simply stared at the number.

*Unknown.*

Elena watched him. "Damian?"

He answered. "Hello?"

Silence. Then a distorted voice spoke. "She's getting too comfortable."

Damian's face hardened. "Who is this?"

The caller laughed softly. "You should be more careful with Elena."

The line went dead. Damian called back immediately, but the number was unavailable.

Elena's smile disappeared. "What did they say?"

Damian looked at her. For a moment, he considered lying. But he knew better.

"They mentioned you."

Her heart sank. "What did they say?"

Damian stepped closer. "They said you're getting too comfortable."

Elena swallowed. The peaceful feeling she'd woken up with that morning suddenly disappeared. But Damian reached for her hand.

"Don't be afraid."

"I'm not."

He looked into her eyes. "Good."

Because whoever was behind the call had made one mistake — they had reminded Damian of something. Elena was no longer facing everything alone. And if someone wanted to disturb the peace she had finally found, they would have to go through him first.

Her grandfather was waiting for her when she arrived, which told Elena everything before she'd said a word. He'd known this conversation was coming since the moment Damian's security team pulled that bank statement."You should sit," he said."I'd rather stand."He nodded, as though he'd expected that too, and folded his hands in his lap the way he always did before delivering news he didn't want to give."Katherine didn't die of her heart," he said. "Or not only that. It's complicated, and I've spent seven years telling myself complicated was close enough to a lie that it didn't count as one."Elena set the bank statement on the table between them. "Someone has been funding an account under her name for seven years. Paying Marcus Reyes. Explain that to me."Her grandfather looked at the paper like it was something that could still bite him."Katherine wasn't just your aunt," he said slowly. "She ran security for this family for almost a decade before you were born. Off the books, mos

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    052: Six Weeks

The doctor's office was quiet in the way expensive places always were — no waiting room chatter, no rushed appointments, just soft lighting and the faint hum of machines that were about to answer a question Elena had been avoiding for weeks.Damian sat beside her, his hand wrapped around hers, saying nothing because he understood, without being told, that she needed the silence more than reassurance right now."Six weeks along," Dr. Whitfield said, turning the monitor slightly so Elena could see. "Measurements are right on track."Six weeks.Elena did the math again, the way she'd done it a dozen times already in the privacy of her own head, and the number landed exactly where it had every other time. Six weeks put conception right around the week she'd been signed over to Damian. Not years ago, in a hotel room she'd spent seven years trying to forget.Now.Recently.The night she'd told herself, at the time, hadn't meant anything."Elena." Damian's voice was low, steady, meant only f

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    051: The Reckoning Begins

By the time Elena walked into the Vale Group's headquarters, the entire city already knew her name.Cameras lined the entrance. Reporters shouted questions she didn't answer. Analysts had spent the last three days rewriting projections for a company everyone thought had lost its heir seven years ago, and now here she was, stepping out of a car with Damian Blackwood's hand at the small of her back, dressed like a woman who had never once been anyone's collateral. She didn't flinch under the lights. She'd spent too long flinching."Ms. Vale." A board member met her at the door, older, cautious, testing the ground before he committed to a side. "We weren't expecting you so soon.""I've been gone seven years," Elena said. "I don't intend to waste a single day more."The boardroom fell silent when she entered. These were men who had run her father's company in her absence, who had built careers on the assumption she would never come back to claim what was hers. A few looked afraid. A few l

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    050: Following the Money

By morning, Damian's security team had a location. Not a home address — Marcus Reyes hadn't lived anywhere long enough to leave a paper trail worth following. But he had a habit of using the same private mail service every few weeks, a small storefront wedged between a dry cleaner and a shuttered bakery on the edge of the industrial district."It's not much," the head of security admitted, sliding a folder across Damian's desk. "But it's the only thread that's actually moved in three days."Elena reached for the folder before Damian could. "Then we pull it.""Elena—""I'm not asking you to let me go alone." She met his eyes. "I'm telling you I'm coming."Damian studied her for a long moment, the way he did when he was deciding whether to fight her or trust her. He chose trust. He usually did, these days."Fine," he said. "But we do this quietly. If Marcus knows we're looking, he disappears."The mail service was smaller than the photograph suggested, lit by a single flickering sign an

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    049: The Hotel

Damian didn't sit. He never did when the truth was about to cost him something."Seven years ago, I wasn't in that city by accident," he said. "I was there because my father had just died, and I'd inherited a company that was quietly bleeding out from a deal he'd made with your family."Elena's grip on his hand tightened. "My family?""The Vale Group had a controlling stake in a shipping consortium my father needed to survive. He'd borrowed against it without telling anyone — including me. When he died, I had ninety days to either renegotiate the terms or lose everything he'd spent thirty years building." Damian's jaw worked. "I flew in to meet with a Vale representative. Someone who could get me an audience with your father before the board found out how close we were to collapse.""And instead you met me.""I didn't know who you were. Not that night." He finally looked at her. "You told me your name was Ellie. You said you were in town for a wedding you didn't want to attend."Elena

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    048: What He Never Told Her

Damian's security team traced the call within thirty-six hours. A burner phone, purchased in cash, activated for eleven minutes and never used again. Untraceable, technically. But the store it came from sat two blocks from a building Damian recognized immediately — the old Sterling Holdings satellite office, the one Adrian had quietly shut down during the restructuring. "That doesn't mean Adrian's involved," Elena said, reading the report over Damian's shoulder. "I didn't say it did." He set the tablet down. "But someone who used to have access to that building did." "Marcus." Damian looked up. "You know that name?" "No." Elena frowned. "But Vanessa's been different this week. Distracted. My assistant mentioned she canceled two meetings and left the office early yesterday without telling anyone where she was going." "You're still keeping tabs on Vanessa." "I'm keeping tabs on the people who might hurt me. She qualifies." Elena crossed her arms. "She always has." Damia
