Sophia did not sleep.

She stood in the dark corridor with the small brass key in her fist. The house was silent. Somewhere far below, a clock chimed two. She listened until she was sure that no one was awake, not even Mrs. Carter, who always seemed to be awake.

Then she walked to the study and let herself in.

The room smelled like leather and old paper. A thin line of moonlight lay across the desk. Sophia did not turn on the lamp. She knelt in front of the bottom drawer and slid the key into th

Henry Bennett's laughter drifted out of the little phone and over the muddy lane."I can hear you breathing, my boy," he said. "Do not worry. I am not going to shout. I only called to be polite."Adrian's hand tightened on the phone. "Where are you?""Having a very good lunch. I took a table by the window at the Grand Hotel, three streets from the courthouse." A fork clinked against a plate. "The soup is excellent. You should have come.""What have you done to the helicopter?""Nothing at all. I am a man of peace. My friends were only curious about how it worked." He gave a pleased sigh. "But I think you will find it does not fly. And the road from Alder Creek takes three hours. It is now a quarter to three."Elena felt the blood drain from her face."Whitmore will be formally charged at five o'clock," said Henry. "Judge Warren has, unfortunately, been called away. A sick relative. So Judge Coyle will take the bench. A very sensible man. He enjoys a good dinner.""You cannot do this."

Elena stared at the envelope in her hand. The old cottage on Willow Lane. She read the line three times, and each time the words seemed to grow louder in her head. It was her village. It was her father's name. It was a low white cottage at the end of a muddy path, behind a crooked fence, with its shutters always closed."I know that house," she whispered."Elena?" said Adrian."I was never allowed near it. Papa said the roof was falling in. He said it was dangerous." She pressed a hand to her chest. "But every Sunday, after church, he took a basket down the lane. He said he was feeding the stray cats."Nobody spoke."I believed him. I was a child. I was only glad he came home smiling." Her voice shook. "There was a man. I remember now. A quiet man who sat on the step in the evenings, mending watches. When I was eight, he passed a box of pencils to me through the fence. He said, keep drawing, little one."Adrian's face had gone very still. "A man with grey in his hair?""I do not remem

The courtroom doors swung shut, and the sound of Whitmore's voice faded down the hall.Nobody moved. The old man's little glass bottles were still rolling across the floor. One of them stopped against Elena's shoe. She bent and picked it up. It was cold and empty and had a tiny label in Whitmore's neat handwriting."Order," said Judge Warren, though no one was speaking. He rubbed his tired eyes. "Dr. Whitmore will be held in this building until five o'clock this afternoon. At that time I will hold a hearing on Mr. Bennett's allegation. Until then, nobody is to touch him.""Five o'clock," Elena whispered."Yes, madam. I will be fair. But I cannot ignore a charge of murder." He gathered his papers. "If you have proof of his innocence, bring it."He swept out. The room slowly emptied.Henry Bennett was the last to leave. He strolled up the aisle with his hands in his pockets, and as he passed Adrian, he slowed down and smiled in a friendly way."Chess is a game for patient men, my boy,"

Everyone in the corridor turned.A small stout woman in a brown coat stood at the far end of the hall. Her hat was crooked. Her cheeks were pink. She held her handbag tight against her chest, as if it were a shield. She was breathing hard, because she had climbed three flights of stairs rather than trust the lift."Mrs. Carter," Elena whispered.Beside her stood a tall, heavy man in a black judge's robe, with a stern grey face and a pen tucked behind his ear. Elena knew him at once. Judge Warren, the man who had stamped her withdrawal with his own hand.Henry Bennett did not stop smiling. "Madam, this is a private family matter.""I am the trustee of the Blackwood Trust," said Mrs. Carter. Her voice was small, but it was as hard as a nail. "I have been for seven years. Mr. Edward put my name on the paper himself. I have been waiting a long time for someone to need me.""A housekeeper.""A trustee, Mr. Bennett. It is in writing." She opened her bag and drew out a thick envelope sealed

The helicopter was waiting in the field behind the lake house, its blades already turning slowly in the cold air.Elena ran across the wet grass with her heart in her throat. Everything had happened so fast that she could hardly think. The hearing had been moved forward. Henry Bennett was in the courthouse. And her father, thin and grey on a stretcher, was being lifted into the back of an ambulance by two paramedics. She reached the open door and climbed up beside him."Papa."His eyes opened. They were clearer than they had been all week. He looked at her torn sleeve, at the blood on her palms, at the dirt on her face, and a faint smile crossed his lips."You look like you fell out of a tree," he said."A window, Papa.""That is worse."She laughed, and her eyes filled with tears. Her mother sat at his other side, holding his hand in both of hers, murmuring the rosary under her breath. Dr. Ames was already attaching a small green monitor to his chest."He is stable," the doctor said.

Nobody on the dock made a sound.Sophia stood at the end of the old wooden pier with the mist curling around her ankles. Her cream coat was wet at the hem. Her hair, which had always been so smooth, hung in tangles over her shoulders. She looked small and young, like the twelve year old girl she had just described."Bought," Adrian repeated slowly. "What do you mean, bought?""I grew up in the Saint Agnes home for girls." Her voice shook, but it kept going. "It was a grey house with forty beds. I had one dress that was mine. One day a big man in a good coat came to look at us. He walked along the line and stopped in front of me. He said, that one. She does not cry."She wiped her face with the back of her hand."I thought he was kind. He brought me to a house with a garden. He gave me a room with a window. He said I was his daughter now, and he paid for everything. Lessons. Dresses. A tutor to teach me how to speak. I was so grateful that I would have done anything he asked.""And wha
