The kitchen door handle turned, slowly.

Adrian did not breathe. Mrs. Carter moved faster than he had ever seen her move. She grabbed his sleeve with one wrinkled hand, pulled him across the stone floor, and pushed him through the narrow door of the pantry. It was a tall, dark cupboard full of flour sacks and jars. She shut the door on him with a soft click.

"Not a sound, Master Adrian," she whispered through the wood.

Then she picked up the big brown teapot, put on her calmest face, and said in

Elena stood frozen on the hospital steps. The long black car had vanished round the corner. The street was empty. Only the cold wind moved, pushing a paper cup along the gutter with a small hollow rattle. She looked at the phone in her hand. The photograph of the white tiled room glowed back at her, and the words under it seemed to burn.Margaret has already read the clause. She turned and ran back through the glass doors, down the long corridor, past the nurse's desk. Adrian was standing outside her father's room with his hands in his pockets, talking quietly with Dr. Ames. When he saw her face, he stopped."What happened?"She held out the phone. He read the message once, and she watched the color leave his cheeks."Margaret Bennett," he said slowly."Do you know her?""She was at my father's funeral. She held my hand and cried." His voice sounded far away. "She sent me a birthday card every year. A tin of shortbread at Christmas. I called her Aunt Margaret."A door opened behind hi

Elena sat down slowly, because her legs would not hold her.Judge Warren looked down at the page for a long moment. The courtroom was so quiet that she could hear the old clock above the door. Adrian came and stood close behind her chair, with one hand resting on the wood. She could feel the warmth of him through her coat."I will read it exactly as it is written," said Warren. He cleared his throat. "To my granddaughter in law, Elena Hart, I leave sixty percent of the shares of Blackwood Group, to take effect on the sixth anniversary of her marriage. This gift comes with one condition. On that day, before three witnesses, she must declare of her own free will that she wishes to remain Adrian's wife."A murmur ran through the benches."A wife held by law, by money, or by fear shall not inherit. If she does not make this declaration, or if the marriage has ended by any other cause, the shares shall pass to the Bennett Trust."He put the page down."The sixth anniversary falls in ten mo

The guards dragged Michael toward the side door, and the whole courtroom seemed to explode.Victoria screamed her husband's name. Adrian struggled in the arms of the guard who held him. Henry Bennett stood quietly in the front row with his hands folded, like a man at a church service. Judge Coyle banged his gavel again and again, shouting for order.Elena did not shout. She looked at the table where Mr. Grant had dropped his folder, and at the little silver recorder in Adrian's coat pocket, and suddenly she knew exactly what to do.She slipped her hand into his pocket and pulled it out."Elena?" he gasped. She ran. Her shoes slapped across the wooden floor. At the front of the room, the clerk sat behind a small desk with a black microphone on a stand, the one that carried every word to the court's speakers. The clerk, a thin boy with spectacles, looked up with his mouth open."Please," Elena said. "Forgive me."She pressed the little silver button and held the recorder against the mic

Henry Bennett's laughter drifted out of the little phone and over the muddy lane."I can hear you breathing, my boy," he said. "Do not worry. I am not going to shout. I only called to be polite."Adrian's hand tightened on the phone. "Where are you?""Having a very good lunch. I took a table by the window at the Grand Hotel, three streets from the courthouse." A fork clinked against a plate. "The soup is excellent. You should have come.""What have you done to the helicopter?""Nothing at all. I am a man of peace. My friends were only curious about how it worked." He gave a pleased sigh. "But I think you will find it does not fly. And the road from Alder Creek takes three hours. It is now a quarter to three."Elena felt the blood drain from her face."Whitmore will be formally charged at five o'clock," said Henry. "Judge Warren has, unfortunately, been called away. A sick relative. So Judge Coyle will take the bench. A very sensible man. He enjoys a good dinner.""You cannot do this."

Elena stared at the envelope in her hand. The old cottage on Willow Lane. She read the line three times, and each time the words seemed to grow louder in her head. It was her village. It was her father's name. It was a low white cottage at the end of a muddy path, behind a crooked fence, with its shutters always closed."I know that house," she whispered."Elena?" said Adrian."I was never allowed near it. Papa said the roof was falling in. He said it was dangerous." She pressed a hand to her chest. "But every Sunday, after church, he took a basket down the lane. He said he was feeding the stray cats."Nobody spoke."I believed him. I was a child. I was only glad he came home smiling." Her voice shook. "There was a man. I remember now. A quiet man who sat on the step in the evenings, mending watches. When I was eight, he passed a box of pencils to me through the fence. He said, keep drawing, little one."Adrian's face had gone very still. "A man with grey in his hair?""I do not remem

The courtroom doors swung shut, and the sound of Whitmore's voice faded down the hall.Nobody moved. The old man's little glass bottles were still rolling across the floor. One of them stopped against Elena's shoe. She bent and picked it up. It was cold and empty and had a tiny label in Whitmore's neat handwriting."Order," said Judge Warren, though no one was speaking. He rubbed his tired eyes. "Dr. Whitmore will be held in this building until five o'clock this afternoon. At that time I will hold a hearing on Mr. Bennett's allegation. Until then, nobody is to touch him.""Five o'clock," Elena whispered."Yes, madam. I will be fair. But I cannot ignore a charge of murder." He gathered his papers. "If you have proof of his innocence, bring it."He swept out. The room slowly emptied.Henry Bennett was the last to leave. He strolled up the aisle with his hands in his pockets, and as he passed Adrian, he slowed down and smiled in a friendly way."Chess is a game for patient men, my boy,"
