Chapter 108

Author: Arlo Drake
Wilson leaned casually against the side of his car, lazily lighting a cigarette. He exhaled a slow puff of smoke and smirked. "Well, well. I was wondering who was polluting the city center with fireworks. Turns out it's you." He flicked ash from the tip. "Not surprised, though. You've never exactly been known for your class."

Justin's face darkened immediately upon seeing him. "Why? Are you jealous?"

"Jealous of being rejected by Serena?" Wilson scoffed.

"Jealous of how deeply she once loved me. Jealous that we shared a past she'll never forget," Justin sneered. Don't flatter yourself, Wilson. We're both men here. You think I don't know what's going on in that head of yours?" Justin's eyes turned icy.

Wilson bit down on the cigarette, leaning against the Bentley with a devil-may-care grin. The night cast a roguish shadow across his handsome face. "And what exactly am I thinking? You planning to police my thoughts now too?"

"Serena belongs to me," Justin said.

"Oh? Does she have y

Candice's eyes reddened. "It's alright, Mom. Maybe it'll heal on its own."Justin cut her off. "How did you fall from the second floor?"Lara immediately raised her voice. "That's a question for your mother, Mr. Farrow! We might not be as rich as your family, but we've always cherished Candice! Even if your mother doesn't like my daughter, does she have to humiliate her at our home?"George pounded his chest in frustration. "We only have one daughter. If anything happens to her, it'll be the death of us!""Dad, Mom. Stop it!" Candice bit her lip. "Please leave. I want to talk to Justin alone."Reluctantly, they left the room.Candice lowered her head. "I'm sorry.""What are you apologizing for?" Justin asked."I didn't want you to find out about this. I didn't want to make things difficult for you. I know Mrs. Farrow only wants what's best for you, someone from a family that matches yours. But I still want her approval." Tears welled up in her eyes as she wiped them away. "I'

The next morning, Serena was jolted awake by the blaring sound of her alarm. She groggily reached out to turn it off but paused when she noticed a new message on her phone from an unfamiliar number.Curious, she opened it and immediately felt a wave of disgust wash over her. The explicit and crude text stared back at her, bold and unapologetic. "I've been watching you for a while. You're so beautiful. I want you. In my mind, I've imagined countless times doing things to you…"Serena's stomach churned. A shiver ran down her spine as the memory of being stalked resurfaced, fresh and vivid. She had barely recovered from that ordeal, and now this?Without hesitation, she blocked the number, shaking off the lingering unease. After freshening up and getting dressed, she was just about to leave when someone knocked on her door.Willow was standing there with a bright smile and a bag of breakfast in hand. "There's a new breakfast spot downstairs. I heard it's pretty good. Want to try it to

Willow shook her head. Composing herself, she got into the car to head to the hospital. She had only just started the car when she got a call from Carmen. "Lo, is this how you want things to be between you and your father? For heaven's sake, what will people think of your spat? I expected better behavior from our daughter!""It'd be stupid of me to stay and wait for you and Dad to sell me off!" Willow snapped.Carmen argued, "Enough with that nonsense, Lo! I'm your mother. I'm only looking out for your best interests! Leonard is good-looking and comes from a good family."He's kind and humble, unlike the other swaggering scions. He's a fine young man, Lo. You'll see what I mean once you get to know him."Willow could have scoffed. "Yes, you're right. He's not like the other scions. Of the 19 roses he gave me, three of them were wilted! Is that the romantic pursuit you'd expect from a guy with money? If I didn't know better, I'd think the bouquet was trash left on my doorstep!""L

Willow watched as Leonard left in a rage and rolled her eyes. She'd heard he was a mommy's boy, but she didn't think he had a huge ego, to boot. She was rolling her eyes when she caught the door of her consultation suite opening, and a man with a towering build entered. It was Arthur.Willow blinked, then broke into a meaningful smile. "Seems like everyone's pretending to be sick just to see me. What gives?"Arthur crossed the room to her, his coat hanging loosely on his tall and straight silhouette. The gold-rimmed glasses he wore accentuated his finely chiseled features, playing up his gentlemanly charm."You mean Leonard? I ran into him outside your office. He looked pretty pissed," he remarked."Do you know him?" Willow asked."Yes. Our family has business dealings with the Joneses, so we've met." As Arthur made himself comfortable and took his seat, a sharp look flashed in his eyes. "Did he come to ask you out on a date?""I wouldn't say that," she said with a sigh. "My p

Wilson had been on his feet since the early morning and met with several clients consecutively. Serena shadowed him the entire time and did her fair share of work, too.It wasn't until noon that they finally took a breather. Wilson had turned down his client's offer to grab lunch together and found a quiet, ornate restaurant to dine in.Shrugging off his jacket, he draped it over the back of a carved rosewood chair and sauntered over to one side of the room where an elaborate water feature hosted a school of goldfish. He stopped and stared at the fish as they darted back and forth in the man-made pond.Serena asked, "What do you feel like having, Mr. Quade?""Anything's fine. I'm not picky," Wilson answered.Serena and Sebastian ordered a couple of dishes off the menu. She closed the menu after that and glanced at Wilson. Her conversation with Willow earlier today flickered through her mind, and she couldn't help feeling sorry for Wilson as she stared at his forlorn silhouette.A

Serena pursed her lips and approached the grave. Justin's gaze was soft as he greeted her, "Hey, Serena.""When did you get here?" she asked."A while ago." Justin stood by the side and watched as she set the roses and daisies before the tombstone. He said, "You were just a kid the first time we came here. You were hugging the tombstone and weeping to the point of passing out. I had to piggy-back you home after that, remember?"Serena said nothing. She remembered. She had cried a lot during the first few years after her parents' passing but stopped after she moved in with the Farrows, not wanting to trouble them with her grief.Even if she did feel like crying, she'd only ever do it in front of Justin. Over the years, he had accompanied her when she visited her parents' graves. He was reliable in that regard, and he made a point to show up even after their relationship grew strained. On the days he couldn't, he'd have someone go in his place to light candles for her parents.Sere

Justin's gaze darkened. "You don't have to trouble yourself. I'll give Serena a lift."Wilson said nothing but kept his eyes on Serena, waiting for her answer. Only then did she snap out of her daze and try to break free from Justin's hold. However, she saw the backseat window of the Bentley roll down to reveal Desiree.Serena went still."He's involved with someone else. You'd only be third-wheeling if you went with him. Come on, I'll give you a lift," Justin said."Mr. Quade is my superior," Serena hissed."He doesn't look at you like a superior does, not from what I've seen. You must know he's marrying Desiree. It'd be ignorant of you to go with him now," Justin countered. He added quietly, "Come with me. Grandma's been talking about you. You should give her a call."Serena hesitated for a moment, then glanced at Wilson. "Mr. Quade, head back with Ms. Stone without me."A stormy look flashed in Wilson's eyes. She thought he would deliver a sharp comeback, but he remained word

Beatrice beamed, and before hanging up, she said, "No backtracking!"After the call ended, Justin kept his phone in his pocket. "Come along, then."Serena took a few steps away from him and headed in the other direction. "I can get a cab.""Serena, you're—" Justin argued."Quade Group is out of the way for you if you're heading to Farrow Corporation," Serena cut him off curtly, her pretty face impassive. "I don't want to come between Desiree and Mr. Quade, but I don't want anything to do with you, either."Justin fixed her with a steely look. "What if I were to break up with Candice?""I told you before that Candice wasn't the problem, but you'd never understand." Serena turned and ran down the steps. Upon leaving through the cemetery gates, she slid into one of the cabs idling by the curb and disappeared from Justin's sight.…Inside the Bentley, Desiree explained softly, "I didn't know it was your mom's death anniversary today until my father told me. I figured I'd come by an

Jillian's answer was savage. "I, for one, am relieved that I did not invest in Desiree's studio. She has blood on her hands and has committed so many unspeakable crimes. If I'd been affiliated with her studio, it would have shaved years off my life!"Desiree argued angrily, "Those are rumors, Grandma! Serena was trying to launch a smear campaign against me!""I can judge whether it was a smear campaign or not! Now, you will stop the damage you've done to Serena's patisserie, and that's final!" Jillian snapped."No way!" Desiree refused outright. "I want nothing more than to see that bitch dead! I will never help her clear her name!"Looking thunderous, Jillian stood up and slapped Desiree hard across the face. An angry hand imprint formed on Desiree's snow-white cheek, and she fell into a daze.Gary was apoplectic. "Mom! What are you doing? You just hit your granddaughter!""I have no granddaughter as wicked and vile as her!" Jillian seethed."You've crossed the line! I'll—"Be

Jillian initially believed Desiree would not be as ruthless as Gary, who did not draw the line at hurting family. However, after Desiree's bullying scandal that led to someone's death and the incident today, Jillian came to realize that Desiree and Gary were both scoundrels.…Gary had a villa in Nocturna as well. Following her recent scandal, Desiree had confined herself within the villa. While nursing her bruised ego, she plotted against Serena. The media outlets she'd hired to write vicious articles about Serena were silenced. It wasn't hard to figure out Wilson was behind the gag order. Did he truly care about Serena that much? Desiree frowned. She was trying to devise new ways to torment Serena when she heard the maid say they had a guest."What guest?" No one had bothered coming to see Desiree since her fall from grace. Puzzled, she got up to see a silver-haired old lady approaching her with a steady gait, followed by her entourage.Desiree was surprised. "Grandma?"She

Serena uttered, "Wilson?""Do you need help?" Wilson asked.Serena admitted reluctantly, "Yes."She thought she heard him chuckle on the other end of the line. "Send me the address."She sent him the address of the fruit shop. Within 20 minutes, the rumbling sound of the car engine came from outside the shop.Wilson led his men into the establishment, rolling up the sleeves of his black shirt to reveal his expensive watch. His gaze swept over the people in the room before falling on the deliveryman."Is that the guy?" Wilson asked.Serena nodded. "Yes, but we can't get anything out of him. He insists that it's a personal grudge against the shopowner.""Leave the interrogating to the professionals, Serena," Wilson drawled as he gave Kayden a look. The latter got the hint and immediately dragged the deliveryman to the other side of the room.Serena asked in hushed tones, "You're not going to kill him or anything, are you?""Am I that cruel?" Wilson quipped.Serena eyed him spe

Joanna had only just made the announcement when a few uniformed officers entered the kitchen. After presenting their warrant, they informed Serena they had come to investigate her patisserie.Serena had no grounds to obstruct the officers' work, so she agreed. The officers took a few ingredient samples and looked into the hygiene conditions of the patisserie."The results should be out soon, Ms. Judd. Wait for our notice," one of the officers said."Alright."When Serena had seen the officers out the door, she stopped all business sales in the patisserie. She also took a few ingredient samples to have them tested.Joanna was distressed. "Our ingredients are fine, Serena. What are you worried about?""We can't be too certain," Serena pointed out.Whoever was behind this wouldn't have stirred up this much trouble without laying the groundwork. Serena figured she was better off safe than sorry. She didn't have any connections to ensure a rapid testing of the ingredients, so she we

Jessica waited until Justin left before turning to Lila. "What's your relationship with Mr. Farrow?""I'm indebted to him," Lila said."Look, I don't care how you managed to bewitch Mr. Farrow, but I expect you to do a good job as my assistant. I won't go easy on you just because you're involved with Mr. Farrow, got it?" Jessica warned."Yes. Uh, Ms. Hayes, is there any work you'd like me to do now?" Lila asked."You can start with tidying up my workdesk.""Alright." Lila immediately went over to the desk and got to work.A smile curved Jessica's lips. She might not have been able to boss Serena around, but she doubted Lila was a tough opponent. "When you're done with the workdesk, get me a cup of coffee.""Got it," Lila replied dutifully.Jessica was pleased by Lila's obedience and turned to walk away. While tidying up Jessica's desk, Lila spotted the docket set on one side. It contained a thick tender proposal. She stared at the proposal for a few seconds, then looked away.

After leaving the restaurant, Justin gave Lila a ride back to her place, which she rented. Upon entering the residential area, he remarked, "This neighborhood looks old and run-down. You should move someplace nicer."Lila replied slowly, "I should, but first, I need a new job."When Justin heard this, he was suddenly reminded of something. "Your manager mentioned you were in college, but then you quit halfway and started working at the club because you were in dire straits. Which college did you go to?""I was a student at Nocturna University, the local campus," Lila answered."That's a pretty good university." Justin was a little stunned. This was the first time he'd asked about her private life, and her answer surprised him. After some thought, he offered, "You should go back to college. I'll continue to sponsor you.""Really?" Lila's eyes lit up. "Thank you, Mr. Farrow—""Stop thanking me. You were supposed to have a brilliant life full of experiences, and you shouldn't waste

Justin was seated at a table in a high-end restaurant in Nocturna as he stared at the phone in his hand. The news about Ronald was displayed on the screen.Surprised that Ronald had been imprisoned, Justin read the article carefully, then closed the page. The Quades' affairs were none of his concern. With his company recently gearing up to bid on a large project, he'd painstakingly drafted the tender proposal and planned to submit it for the bidding."Aren't you going to eat, Mr. Farrow?" Lila asked softly from across the table."I was checking the news," Justin said, pocketing his phone.Lila poked at the steak on her plate. "Mr. Farrow, this is my first time dining at such a fancy restaurant… I never had a chance to come to such places before.""I gave you money, didn't I? You can eat whatever and wherever you want.""You've been incredibly kind to me, Mr. Farrow… I must have saved the universe in my past life to meet you in this one," Lila said.Justin fell into a momentary d

Willow's voice trembled slightly, followed by a bitter smile. "Arthur, what do you think she was trying to do? I'd already given up on our relationship. And now, she dies right in front of me. Do you know what her last words to me were? She said she's sorry."She lowered her head, hands digging into her hair. She looked completely drained, both physically and emotionally. "I don't understand. Did she love me or not? If she did, why was she always siding with Ronald? Why didn't she ever stand up for me? But then, there were so many times I felt like she did love me."Tears slid down her cheeks. "I remember when I was little and had a fever. She stayed up the whole night with me, didn't sleep a second. When I got beaten, she'd secretly put medication on me. When I went overseas, she used to call and ask how I was doing. But after a few minutes, she'd start scolding me, saying I never called Ronald."If she really loved me, why didn't she protect me when he hit me? Why did she want me

Willow rushed forward and caught Carmen just before she collapsed.A nearby officer tackled Ronald to the ground.Carmen fell into her arms, tears streaming down her face. Her hand trembled as she reached up and gently touched Willow's cheek. There was sorrow and guilt in her eyes. Her vision blurred as her consciousness faded, but in that haze, she saw a memory—Willow as a child. Back when she first gave birth to her, Ronald and his mother, Sarah Pattinson, were furious that it was a girl. They didn't even bother to visit. For those first few years, it was just her and Willow getting through one sleepless night after another. It was Willow who filled the emptiness and pain in her heart. She used to hold that tiny child in the dark, press kisses onto her soft little face, and dream that one day her daughter would grow up to be poised and happy, with a good life ahead. However, the moment Ronald came back into their lives, fear returned with him.
