Chapter 4 The Apology That Came Too Late

作者: Bowl of Rice
My voice had gone hoarse, trembling with the aftermath of tears and a kind of quiet despair. "I didn't! Jace, you have to believe me! I never touched her dress!"

Unfortunately for me, Jace only turned his face away, his tone cold. "Grace, you shouldn't have treated Brooke like that. Seeing her upset makes me angry as well."

I tried to explain, but it was all futile. I remembered how my tears had mixed with the rain still clinging to my face as they poured out uncontrollably. "Why won't you believe me? You said you would always trust me…"

Jace looked at me for a long time.

In the end, he slowly shook his head. "Grace, stop making excuses. Brooke wouldn't lie. Apologize. Otherwise… we're done."

I fell silent.

I looked up at him once. Back then, I couldn't see him clearly with the rain and tears blurring my vision.

Then, I turned and went straight to the airport.

The cold sensation on the back of my hand lingered. Brooke was still crying.

I had finally received the apology I had wanted most five years ago. Oddly enough, I felt nothing. It was like applying a miracle cure to a wound that had already scarred over. The injury had long healed, but the scar still remained, ugly and unchanging.

The three of them couldn't stand my indifference, nor could they bear to watch Brooke keep crying. So, they began trying to persuade me to forgive them.

Adrian was the first to break.

"Grace, it's been five years. Look at how upset Brooke is. Why can't you just let things go?"

I lifted my eyes to him, suddenly unable to recall what it had felt like to go to school with him back then.

I asked calmly, "Adrian, do you remember what happened five years ago? I was crying just as hard. And yet, you still drove me out of the house."

Adrian fell silent.

Then came Simon, the very person who had forced me out back then.

He picked up the conversation and said, "I'm sorry, Grace. I acted too rashly back then. But both you and Brooke are my sisters. I was just so anxious at the time. Can't you… Can't you forgive us? We've all missed you for these past five years."

I let out a quiet scoff.

I didn't bother waiting for the last musketeer. So, I turned to Jace, who had remained silent until now. I found an odd sense of amusement as I pressed, "What about you? Do you have anything to say? Or are you going to force me to forgive you like the rest of them?"

Jace's words immediately caught in his throat. His pleas turned to ash, clogging his airways and making his chest tighten with discomfort.

I swept my gaze coldly over all four of them and suddenly found the entire situation meaningless.

"Fine. I forgive you. If that's the answer you want, then there you have it. Please, by all means, don't come looking for me again. I'm very happy with my life now. I really don't need any of you anymore."

Then, I picked up my clutch and walked toward the exit. Alas, I had barely taken two steps again when hurried footsteps sounded behind me.

Jace had caught up to me and grabbed my hand. His eyes were red, and I could see the faint glimmer of tears in them. "Grace, don't go! I don't want to wait another five years for you. Let's get married."

I froze.

Honestly, I thought he had lost his mind.

I had already told them at the airport, the very first time we met after five years of nothing, that I was married. I had stated plainly that I was married and I had a child.

It seemed that none of them believed me. Why was I even surprised?

I sighed in annoyance. I was about to reiterate my words from back then when Zachary suddenly burst through the crowd. He threw himself at my legs, hugging me tightly as he called out in a sweet voice, "Mommy! Mommy, I've finally found you!"

I was startled.

I immediately looked up, and there Cameron was, dressed in formal wear, walking slowly toward me. His tender gaze lingered on my face, filled with undisguised warmth and love just for me.

"Zach missed you, honey, and so did I."

The day I left, the weather was clear and bright.Zachary was brimming with excitement for the upcoming flight, nestled in Cameron's arms as he pointed out different aircraft models. His soft, childish voice carried one question after another due to his seemingly bottomless curiosity.Just then, a flight attendant approached us with a polite smile. "Mrs. Jennings, a gentleman at the front desk asked us to pass this to you. He wished you a pleasant journey."I was a little surprised as I accepted the small box.It was light in my hands. The packaging was simple, without any ribbons. All it had was just a fresh sprig of white lily of the valley pinned to the edge of the lid.The flower's meaning was "the return of happiness." It felt oddly fitting.I looked up. "Where is he?""He's already left. The gentleman didn't leave his name. He only said he was an old friend. He left in a hurry after confirming that we would deliver it to you."An old friend?A quiet guess formed in my mi

The sun shone brightly yet gently on our last day at Sycamore Manor. Most of our luggage had already been packed as we would be taking the private jet back to Westeria early the next morning. When the housekeeper knocked and entered, there was a hint of uncertainty in his expression. "Ma'am, a Ms. Brooke Lent is here. She's at the door and says she would like to see you."I was a little surprised, but I nodded. "Let her in. I'll be there shortly.""Yes, ma'am."Brooke and I sat facing each other. I lowered my gaze, letting it pass over the dark coffee in front of her before speaking softly to the maid standing nearby. "Replace Ms. Lent's coffee with chamomile tea. If I'm not mistaken, she doesn't like coffee."The maid acknowledged and left.Brooke was clearly taken aback by my words. A complicated emotion flickered across her face before she lowered her eyes and said quietly, "Thank you, Grace."The tea was brought in quickly.Brooke wrapped both hands around the warm cup but

I gave a quiet hum of acknowledgement and leaned back against the headboard, my voice still slightly hoarse from sleep. "You got the package?"Simon fell silent for a moment before answering, his mood subdued. "I did. You didn't even take a single bite, did you?""I can't handle things that are too sweet anymore. I appreciate the thought, but it's fine." My tone remained even. The line went quiet again. After a long pause, Simon spoke once more. "But you sent the agreement back too."I pressed my fingers to my temple, unwilling to circle around the topic any longer. "Simon, you already gave that villa away to someone else. Then, you took it back and tried to give it to me again. Don't you think that's a bit much?"He seemed caught off guard by what I had to say, his breathing hitching for a brief second before letting out a self-deprecating laugh. "I'm sorry, Grace. I just keep feeling like I should do something, like if I do something I'll feel a little better. Even if it's just

"Mm." I answered lightly, almost casually. "I'm doing very well now. My personal brand will launch its first skincare product next spring. The lab results look excellent, so I'm confident in it. My husband, Cameron, is gentle and strong. My son is sweet and sensible. "My life feels complete with the two of them by my side."As I spoke, I watched the faint glimmer of hope in Jace's eyes dim, little by little, until it went out completely."As for the past… I hardly think about it anymore. Even my memories of how it used to be have grown blurry. Sometimes, I can't tell whether those things really happened, or if they were just part of a very long nightmare."A breeze lifted the ends of my hair. I raised my head again and looked at Jace calmly, offering him a small, relieved smile."As for those things we said when we were young, about us getting married, about us staying together forever… Jace, you didn't take them to heart. So, neither did I."I promptly turned and sauntered away

"Yes, sir," Frank replied.Cameron's thumb brushed lightly over the back of my hand, slow and soothing. "You don't look too good. Did they give you trouble again? Do you want me to give them a warning?"I shook my head and tightened my grip around his hand, my fingers threading between his."No. Who could possibly bully me? I just…" I paused, trying to find the right words. "I feel a little disappointed. I admit, there was a fire in my chest when I left. I felt wronged, resentful, and angry. I felt like the whole world had turned its back on me."When I came back, I'd imagined countless ways things might go. How I'd argue, how I'd push back, and finally, how I'd make them taste what it felt like to be misunderstood. But from the moment I saw them at the airport… it suddenly felt pointless."As I watched them act like they were facing a great enemy as they carefully shielded Brooke and watched Brooke try so hard to imitate me… The resentment in my eyes cleared as I observed with

Cameron wasted no time coming to my side and reaching out to me, subtly prying Jace's fingers away from my wrist. "Mr. Walker, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Grace's husband, Cameron Jennings."Jace's eyes widened, his entire body freezing in place. The storm in his gaze shifted, slowly and with difficulty, from Cameron's face to mine.I nodded without hesitation. "Yes. Jace, this is my husband, Cameron."Then, I lowered my head slightly and gently stroked Zachary's soft hair. "And this is my son, Zachary."Jace looked as if he had been shattered by that statement, his voice tremulous as he breathed, "Grace… y-you're really married?"Behind him, Adrian, Simon, and Brooke in her tear-streaked glory hurried over as well.Evidently, they heard everything as the expressions on all three of their faces mirrored the same stunned disbelief.Adrian's mouth parted slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but nothing left his lips. Simon's composure cracked into visible confusion be
