Chapter 3

Penulis: Twin Clay
"Get out. You're not welcome here," I said.

Edith and Blake ignored me.

When Blake was sorting out the takeout, some hot coffee splashed onto his hand.

Edith grabbed the tie hanging by the door and used it to wipe the coffee off him.

My heart sank. "Give that to me!"

Mom gave Dad that tie as an anniversary gift the year she died. Dad treasured it and would take it out to wear from time to time.

Edith didn't stop. "Don't be so petty. Blake's skin is sensitive and turns red at the slightest touch. I need to take care of it right away."

Once she finished wiping Blake's hand, she tossed the tie onto the floor without a second thought.

I crouched down and picked it up. It was covered in coffee stains that wouldn't come out. The tie was ruined beyond repair.

I was shaking with anger.

Blake tried to calm me down. "Come on. It's no big deal. It isn't half as expensive as the watch Edith bought me. I'll just pay you back."

Edith looked at me like I was overreacting.

"That was the last gift my mom ever gave Dad. I told you both that," I said angrily.

Blake wouldn't meet my eyes. "I… I didn't know."

Edith was caught off guard for a moment, too.

"Who would remember something that insignificant?" She stepped in front of Blake. "Stop making such a big deal out of it. Blake already apologized."

A week ago, I had accidentally damaged a little fuse-bead charm Edith and Blake had made together. She had been furious and accused me of having no manners.

Now they were the ones who had ruined something and done something wrong, yet somehow I was the one being unreasonable.

Edith would always take Blake's side.

The commotion from the living room brought Dad out of his bedroom. The moment he saw the tie in my hands, tears welled up in his eyes.

"Who did this?" Dad demanded.

Blake apologized half-heartedly. "George, I already sent Connor the money for it. Please don't be angry."

Blake had transferred 10 dollars to me.

Dad was furious when he saw it and slapped Blake across the face. "Who wants your damn money? And who gave you permission to come into my house?"

Blake covered his cheek.

In a fit of anger, he snatched the tie from my hands and shredded it with a pair of scissors.

"It's just a gift from a dead woman! Why the hell should I care what happens to it?" Blake snarled.

Dad struggled to breathe as he watched something he treasured get destroyed. He clutched his chest and fell backward onto the floor.

I panicked and dropped to my knees beside him. He didn't respond to me.

Blake muttered under his breath, "What a performance. He hit me so hard earlier, but now he's pretending to be dead."

Dad had high blood pressure. I was afraid the shock had caused a brain hemorrhage.

I didn't have time to deal with Blake, so I looked at Edith. "Get Dad to the hospital. Now!"

Edith stayed where she was.

Instead, she said mockingly, "George is too old to put on an act like this. Just get him to get up."

She paused, then added, "Connor, I like you better this way, but I'm not stupid. You're not getting everything you want."

Tears stung my eyes.

I felt like I had wasted all those years on her. The woman I had loved for so many years was a complete piece of trash.

My hands were shaking as I called for an ambulance.

Ten minutes later, the paramedics carried Dad out on a stretcher and loaded him into the ambulance.

"He's really committed to the act. Isn't he afraid he'll actually shorten his life?" Blake rolled his eyes when no one was looking.

I turned around and punched him in the face.

"If anything happens to Dad, I'll never forgive either of you," I snapped.

Blake stared at me in disbelief.

Edith's expression hardened. "Enough with the temper tantrum! Blake helped us out, so apologize to him now."

I laughed.

Blake openly flirted with Edith and got between us while claiming he was helping our relationship.

Yet Edith called him our benefactor.

"Edith, can you really not tell that Blake likes you?" I asked.

She went quiet, and that was all the answer I needed.

She knew. She and Blake both knew what they were doing, but neither of them said it out loud.

I was the only fool who had been kept in the dark.

I said nothing else and got into the ambulance.

As the doors closed, I saw Blake resting a hand on Edith's shoulder and leaning down to say something to her.

I didn't see Edith again over the next few days. I thought she and Blake had gone back home. But on my way home from shopping, I ran into them."You're still here?" I asked.Edith said stubbornly, "I won't leave until you change your mind."Blake looked at me with open jealousy and resentment."Go home. I'm not changing my mind," I replied.Edith shook her head.I didn't want to say anything more to her, so I pushed past her and kept walking.Edith bought a place here and lived upstairs from me.Thea was worried about it. "You're not falling for that old woman again, are you? George told me how badly she treated you before. You can't forgive her."I placed a piece of chicken on her plate. "That's not something you need to worry about. Just eat."Thea chewed her food with a sulky expression. After Edith moved in, there was always something left outside my door. Umbrellas on rainy days, expensive health supplements, and carefully prepared dishes.I knew who they were from, a

Edith helped Blake to his feet. She looked furious. "Who are you? This is between Connor and me. Why are you getting involved? Don't you have any manners?"The moment she finished speaking, Dad slapped her hard across the face."You're the last person who has any right to call Thea rude. If anyone here has no manners, it's you!" Dad snapped. "Connor already broke up with you. Why won't you leave him alone?"Edith covered her swollen cheek and was breathing hard with anger, but she didn't dare do anything to Dad.She could only explain quietly, "I never agreed to the breakup, so Connor is still my boyfriend. George, could you please give us a moment alone?"Dad scoffed and took a step back. "Stay away from me. I don't want you upsetting me and then accusing me of pretending to faint. I'm old. I can't take that kind of accusation."Edith's face went pale, then flushed red.Blake couldn't help stepping in to defend her. "George, you're the elder here. How can you be so petty? Bes

Dad and Thea chatted in the living room while I went to the kitchen to prepare dinner. My hands were wet, and I lost my grip on the knife. It fell to the floor.I was about to bend down and pick it up when a slender hand reached down and picked it up first. Thea had come up behind me without me noticing."Here," she said."Thanks. What do you feel like eating today?" I asked.Thea smiled at me. "I like everything you make. Let me help you with the prep. It'll make things easier for you.""You don't have to…" Before I could reject her, Thea was already washing the tomatoes."I already feel bad enough for eating at your place. I'd feel even worse if I just sat around and did nothing."Looking into her beautiful eyes, I couldn't bring myself to refuse. "Alright."I had assumed Thea would only come over for dinner once. But after that, she came over almost every day.She didn't just bring groceries. She brought us gifts too.Dad quickly got used to Thea dropping by for meals.

"Connor, the view here really is beautiful. It's so peaceful."Dad sat by the floor-to-ceiling window. With his glasses on, he gazed out at the view. He hadn't smiled this freely since Mom died.We had settled here because Mom had always said she loved this place.I draped a small blanket over his legs. "We can enjoy views like this every day from now on."Dad took a sip of his tea and smiled. "Did you take care of everything back home? Those two pieces of trash haven't bothered you again, have they?"I was silent for a while, then I shook my head."No. I blocked them both and never gave them our address. They won't bother me again.""That's good," Dad said. "I always thought Edith was trouble, but you loved her and kept giving her chance after chance. I'm glad you've come to your senses."I watched the birds flying outside. Then I said softly, "Yeah. I'm glad I finally saw the truth."Without Edith and Blake in my life, living abroad felt so much easier. My days were simple

At the hotel restaurant, Edith sat at the table, staring down at her phone.More than 20 hours had passed since Edith sent her messages to Connor, and she still hadn't received a reply."How could this be?" she muttered.Connor had always replied to her messages right away. He never took more than an hour.Blake sat beside her. "He still hasn't replied?"Edith nodded, clearly unsettled. "He's really sticking to his guns this time," Blake said.He patted Edith on the shoulder. "Don't worry. He can't stay away from you. Just wait. He'll definitely come back tonight."His reassurance made her feel a little better.Blake was right. Connor loved her. After all these years, no matter how far she and Blake went, Connor had always forgiven her.She just had to wait a little longer. Connor would come back.Edith put away her phone and shot Blake a glance. "You should go. I already told Connor it would just be the two of us tonight. He'll be upset if he sees you here when he gets he

Dad was taken into the ER and brought back out an hour later."There's nothing seriously wrong with him. Just make sure he doesn't get too upset. Let him rest and take good care of him. He'll be fine."The nurse wheeled Dad into his room.I leaned over the side of the bed and held his hand. When Dad woke up, I fed him breakfast. Then, I went home to get our luggage and bring it back to the hospital."I've already put the house up for sale. Once you're discharged tomorrow, we'll go straight to the airport," I said.Dad gently patted my hand. "Okay. Don't blame yourself. What happened to the tie wasn't your fault."I blinked hard, my eyes dry and sore. "Yeah. I know, Dad."When I got home, my bedroom door was slightly ajar.I was sure I had closed it yesterday.Frowning, I pushed it open.A heavy, intimate scent filled the room. Edith and Blake were lying on my bed, with clothes scattered all over the floor.I stared at the scene before me in disbelief. "Why would you do this
