At the Moretti Group's annual awards ceremony, I'd just stepped up to the podium when the screen behind me suddenly went black. A second later, it lit up with dozens of screenshots of private messages. The whole banquet hall erupted. The sender was me. The recipient was Vito Moretti, the company's chairman and the most feared Don in New York's underworld. "When's this month's money coming? Hurry up!" "I'm coming over tonight. Remember to leave the door unlocked for me." "If you don't say yes, I won't come see you tomorrow." The final screenshot showed a transfer for a hefty sum. Then Vito's chief secretary, Victoria Sloane, walked onto the stage. "Isabella is a gold digger! She's been secretly seducing the chairman for money, and she's even tried to meddle in how the company is run. "How does someone like that get to be the company's Employee of the Year?" Down in the audience, the executives looked thunderous, and countless employees stared at me with open contempt. Victoria walked up to me with her nose in the air. "Isabella, if you know what's good for you, you'll admit what you did in front of everyone and drop out of the running!" I looked at her smug, triumphant face and laughed. Wait. Isn't Vito my husband? I sweet-talk my own husband into giving me spending money, and she calls it seducing the chairman for cash?

Chapter 1
Vito Moretti was my husband, and no one in the whole Moretti Group knew it.The day I joined the company, he asked whether I wanted to make our relationship public. But I said no. I didn't want to spend the rest of my life as nothing more than the Don's wife.I wanted the old men on the board to see what I could do, not step aside for me as a favor to Vito.So I told Vito the rules."At the office, you're not allowed to call me your wife.""Why not?"He slid an arm around my waist and raised an eyebrow."The moment people know I'm your wife, they'll assume you handed me everything I've earned."He didn't argue. He just smiled and kissed my forehead.I started to leave, then turned back."Oh, right. What do I do when I run out of money?"I held out my hand, not the least bit embarrassed."I can get promoted without you, but you're still my husband."He took a supplementary card out of his drawer and put it in my hand."If you need money, tell me. Don't get so caught up in proving yourse

Chapter 2
The next morning, there was a sheet of paper taped to my office door.It read, "Some people should have a little self-respect and stop dragging the Moretti Group's name through the mud with their disgusting tricks."I tore it down. It would make good scratch paper for the afternoon meeting. At the morning department meeting, the moment I sat down, the coworkers next to me grabbed their laptops and moved, as if I might be contagious.Victoria's assistant, Amy Carter, came around to my desk and set down a cup of coffee."Ms. Sloane asked me to bring you this."She also asked me to pass something on to you."Amy leaned in and lowered her voice. "If you apologize in public today, she can make this go away."I looked up at her."Apologize? For what?""Isabella, those transfers and the footage of you coming and going are already all over the company."I pushed the coffee back toward her and smiled."Sure, I'll apologize. First, give me back my place in the running."Amy didn't say anything m

Chapter 3
Every Friday, the Moretti Group held an open forum where any employee could sign up to speak.I'd planned to use it to set the record straight, but when I got to my desk, a notice was waiting for me."Decision to Suspend Isabella Hart's Eligibility for Employee of the Year."They just threw me to the wolves, and the paperwork's already done?I took the notice to HR. When Martin saw me, he sighed."Isabella, we have to get the situation under control first."Once Don Moretti is back and this has been looked into, I can apply to have your eligibility restored."I slapped the notice down on his desk."But you pulled me from the running before the investigation was even finished."Martin avoided my eyes."This is a special case."I stared at him, almost amused. So company policy could be bent whenever it suited them.At noon, the open employee forum began in the company's central lobby.I'd thought I could explain myself in front of everyone, but when I reached the sign-up desk, I found a

At noon on Sunday, several black sedans pulled up at the Moretti Group headquarters.Vito was finally back from the family council meeting.Within half an hour, someone posted on the internal forum that Victoria planned to report the findings of her investigation to the chairman in person.I got a notice too. I was to come to the first-floor lobby at two that afternoon to help resolve the dispute. When I went downstairs, the lobby was already packed.Apparently, everyone wanted to see what would happen to the woman they thought had seduced the chairman.Victoria stood in the middle of the crowd. She held a document, and behind her was an announcement board the PR department had hastily put together. It read, "Statement on the Investigation into Isabella Hart's Alleged Professional Misconduct."When the elevator doors opened, the crowd suddenly went quiet.Vito stepped out in a black suit and a dark tie, followed by two family security men.He looked tired after days of closed-door meet

The lobby fell silent for a few long seconds after Vito spoke. Then everyone started talking at once."His wife? Did I hear that right?""Isabella is the Donna? Then why did she keep it a secret all this time?"It was a long moment before Victoria managed to get a word out."Don Moretti, are you... are you joking?"Vito took out his phone and opened his messages.During the family council meeting, his devices had been held by designated staff. Only now could he read the messages that had piled up.The moment the screen lit up, unread notifications started flooding in.At the very top was the message I'd sent him."Honey, your chief secretary says I'm seducing you. Is that true?"There were several more messages after it, all about the trouble Victoria had been causing me at the company.Vito read through them, and his expression darkened with each one.He handed his phone straight to the head of legal beside him."Save these records."His tone was calm, but it left no room for argument

Chapter 6
Half an hour later, we were escorted to a conference room in the company's administration building.Vito was there, along with Martin, Victoria, and Ethan, the head of compliance.Victoria's eyes were red. Her usual poise was gone.Ethan spoke first. "Donna, regarding your marriage to Don Moretti, we need to verify some information."Vito didn't wait for me to answer. He took a document straight out of the inside pocket of his suit jacket. It was an official marriage certificate. Our names were side by side, with the registration date plain to see.Ethan checked it carefully, then had the legal department confirm it was genuine.A few minutes later, he shut the folder."The certificate checks out."Sweat had already beaded on Martin's forehead.Only a few days earlier, he'd told me with a straight face that the company had to address the ethics dispute first. And now it turned out the so-called ethics issue was nothing more than private dealings between the chairman and his wife.Vito

Vito was having lunch with me when his mother called. He'd barely said "Mom" before she started in on him."Vito Moretti, so you finally decided to pick up!"Do you have any idea Isabella's been bullied at your company for days? And you, her husband, were nowhere to be found!"Vito tried to explain. "Our devices were held during the family council meeting...""So you couldn't reach her. Couldn't you have left the meeting early? You've gotten so comfortable as the Don that you can't even look after your own wife!"I lowered my head and tried not to laugh.Vito, the Don feared throughout New York's underworld, couldn't get a word in."Mom, it's already been taken care of.""You think that's the end of it? Her reputation was ruined, and her card was frozen. How are you going to make it up to her?"Vito said solemnly, "Don't worry. I'll handle it.""You'd better. If I ever hear you've let her go through something like this again, I'll come to New York and deal with you myself!"Then the li

Victoria was suspended as chief secretary. Investigators were looking into the leak of the private messages and the frozen card.At three that afternoon, the company's internal system posted an official notice. The title was "Progress Report on the Investigation into Alleged Professional Misconduct and Internal Management Procedures."First, the company withdrew the temporary suspension of my Employee of the Year eligibility, restored me as a candidate, and corrected the internal records.Second, Victoria would remain suspended as chief secretary and could not access the chairman's private devices or related financial records while the investigation continued.Third, the company would continue investigating the leak, the card freeze, and the violations of the selection process. It would decide what action to take under company policy once it had the facts.New discussions soon popped up on the internal forum.[Her eligibility's restored? Guess they really did handle it wrong.][Isn't t

A week later, the Moretti Group announced the final arrangements for the Employee of the Year selection. My name was back on the candidate list. This time, no one dared to say to my face that I'd gotten ahead through connections. On selection day, the committee added an assessment at the last minute. The company was bidding on a commercial real estate project in Manhattan. The candidates had to submit a proposal within a set time and answer management's questions on the spot. The topic I drew happened to be the trickiest part of the whole project. The vice president in charge of the review flipped through my file and asked coldly, "Isabella, your record is strong, but this project involves dealings with several major families. Are you sure you can handle it?"In his eyes, I'd gotten this far not because of my ability but because of the Moretti name.I didn't argue. I opened the analysis report I'd prepared."If you're worried about a conflict of interest, I want to make clear that I ha
