Chapter 3

Author: You to You
Alora snubbed her cigarette and asked in a particularly detached tone, "So, why do you want to die?"

I took in her neatly styled hair, delicate makeup, obviously expensive ensemble, and dazzling high heels.

She did the same with me—appraising my loose, threadbare short-sleeved shirt with stains that could never be washed out, and the broken-soled canvas shoes on my feet.

A soft chuckle escaped her. "You just need money, right? I can give it to you."

She fished a couple of cards from her purse and tossed them at my feet like trash. "There, I've given you money, so what can I expect from you in return? You've got a pretty face. You can repay me with yourself."

Alora angled her head to the side as she stood under the hazy moonlight, looking brighter than the moon itself.

She took me back to her place that same night. She told me that if I did as I was told, she'd give me everything I wanted.

From that day on, I willingly followed Alora and became her secret lover.

Alora made good on her word and settled my debts. She gave me enough money to pay for college and even arranged an internship for me at her company after I graduated.

There was only one thing I had to remember at all times: my place. We respected each other's boundaries of our relationship. We were intimate in bed but strangers outside of it.

I was not the only lover Alora kept. I'd always known that. Her other lovers came and went, but somehow, I was the one who stayed by her the longest.

Alora said I had ambition, and she liked men with ambition. Little did she know that my only ambition had always been her.

Countless times, as I watched her lose herself beneath me, I realized with painful clarity that I had grown greedy. I wanted her to love me.

As agreed, I arrived at the cafe to meet the date Alora had set me up with. I waited for a long time, and it wasn't until most of the customers had left that the young woman finally showed up.

She was wearing a miniskirt and heavy makeup. She shoved past a waiter and sat down across from me.

I looked up and asked a waiter to replace my latte, which had long since gone cold.

"You could have just told me if you were only doing this to get your family off your back."

When I lifted my gaze, the contemptuous expression on the young woman’s face froze.

"Elliot? Elliot Dugray?" She immediately peeled the false lashes from her eyes. When she looked at me again, there was a hint of bashfulness in her expression.

Gemma? The heiress of the Larson family. Alora really had treated me well—she’d found me another powerful family to rely on. But other than that, I couldn’t remember having any connection with Gemma.

"I'm sorry…"

Gemma's eyes darkened. "I'm your junior. We both took art appreciation as our elective. I used to sit behind you all the time. I even borrowed your notes once. Wait, I thought you said you were seeing someone at the time."

Back in college, I had indeed told people I was in a relationship to discourage anyone who was interested in me. But now, with my “girlfriend” having personally arranged this date for me, those words sounded especially bitter.

I smiled, neither confirming nor denying.

As if sensing something, Gemma quietly stirred the coffee in front of her.

“When Alora told me about the date, I didn’t expect it to be you. After all, you two never seemed close.”

I composed myself. I thought anyone who knew Alora would know of my existence. When I looked up again, my tone had turned distant. “We really aren’t close. I simply work at Ms. Sheffield’s company.”

Gemma smiled. There was nothing hostile about her smile, though it looked a little comical with such heavy makeup.

"Let's follow each other on Instagram, Elliot. We can make plans over DMs next time."

Logan's younger brother had taken over the family business, leaving no place for Logan even if he returned.Alora kept Logan's position in her company for him. She'd made up her mind to give him 40% of the company shares, practically handing over the reins to him. He'd rescued her company before. Now, she had nothing else to offer him, only a repayment of his favor. As for Elliot, she'd managed to find out his whereabouts from Gemma and learned that he'd gone to Frinsor. All Gemma told her was that she wished Elliot only happiness.Just like that, Alora traveled to Pareus countless times, all so she could tell Elliot she loved him in person. But now that she had, she was met with only silence.…"Can we start over, Elliot? Let me love you for a change," she begged me with tears in her eyes.I shook my head. "You saved me once, Alora, and I've nothing to give you but love. Our story never began with love. You wanted a companion, and I wanted money. At the end of the day, what we

Alora sought out Gemma, only to earn a hostile look from the latter. No longer did Gemma greet her warmly by her first name. Instead, she impassively demanded that Alora state her business.Alora asked Gemma for Elliot's whereabouts, but Gemma shot her a grimace. "Seriously, Alora, how low can you stoop? How long will you continue to torment Elliot for? Did you set me up with him so you could use me to hurt him?"Well, you thought wrong. I actually like him, and I have since college. He might just be a lover you keep for fun, Alora, but to me, he'll always be the college senior who sits at the front of the class."Gemma's voice began to crack at the end. She was even more devastated than Alora. While Alora could pull out all the stops in her frantic search for Elliot, Gemma was powerless to do so.She could tell Elliot was still in love with Alora when he left.Alora returned home crestfallen, Gemma's words replaying in her head like a broken record. For the first time, she was se

"I spent a long time searching for you after you left, but I didn't know where you'd gone." Alora was bare-faced, and she looked even paler against her brown coat."Alora, you—""Shh, don't speak. Let me look at you, alright?"She sat with me under the tree and watched as the maple leaves fell around us. She seemed to be lost in thought as she twirled a leaf stem between her fingers. "Before we met, I hated this city. Pareus took away my freedom and robbed me of love."It seemed every misfortune in my life started in Pareus. But now, seeing you carve a life for yourself here, I'm suddenly thankful for it. This city led me to you. Do you still hate me, Elliot?"I opened my mouth to say something, but words eluded me in the end.A hurt look crossed Alora’s face. She leaned into the bench, a mark around her ring finger a clear sign of where her engagement band had been."I used to think of you as just another toy. If I'm being honest, I never took you seriously back in the day. But

I hailed a cab right away and headed to the company. It was only eight in the evening. The lights in the company were still on, and some of my former co-workers were working overtime. The lights in Alora's office were still on, too. Almost without realizing it, I found myself standing outside her door. Was she working overtime? She was always working too hard."Just be honest with me, Alora. What is your relationship with Elliot?"It was Logan. He was seated on the couch, and his eyes were rimmed with red.Alora had her back turned to me. All I heard was her voice as she replied, "Oh, him? He's just a pet I picked up and toyed with when I got bored. Don't tell me you're jealous."I peeked through the gap in the door and saw Logan's stormy expression. Grinning, Alora pounced on him like a playful kitten and kissed the corner of his mouth. "He's nobody. All I did was give him a bit of pocket money, and that was enough to make me his god."It's all your fault, anyway. I'd never hav

"Excuse me." I brushed past Logan and left him alone with Alora in the corridor. Our get-together ended on a sour note.Gemma offered to drive me home. She flashed me her usual mischievous smile. "You walked me home the last time, Elliot, and it so happens that you didn't come in a car this time."Under Alora's dark, baleful gaze, I opened the car door and slid into the passenger seat of Gemma's car.Gemma was a good driver, but she spent the entire drive talking about Alora. From the bits of information she'd fed me, I managed to piece together Logan and Alora's history.Alora was not the Sheffields’ only child; her younger brother had died not long after his birth. Her mother had soon been admitted to a care facility after crying every day over the loss of her child and going mad with grief.Alora's father was weak and a hopeless cause. He had no choice but to leave the company to his relatives.Fortunately, Alora was razor-sharp and highly intelligent. She'd gotten her high s

Alora opened the conversation by asking Gemma and me how far along we were in our relationship.Gemma's smile was a little forced as she cut me a look out of the corner of her eye.I finished slicing Gemma's steak, then answered slowly, "We're still getting to know each other."Alora probably just wanted to know whether I was following the path she’d planned for me. So I decided to give them the reassurance they wanted.Logan remained expressionless as usual. He sat at the table and listened while we talked, occasionally checking and replying to messages on his phone."The both of you look good together. You should consider taking the relationship further.” Alora stared at me evenly, her words heavy with implication.I nodded. "I should thank you for introducing me to Gemma. I'll make this opportunity count."Confusion flickered in Gemma's eyes. She crumpled the napkin in her hand, then lowered her gaze to the sliced steak on her plate.Logan answered a phone call and excused h
