Chapter 4

Author: You to You
I didn't turn Gemma down.

The weather had grown chilly by the time we left the cafe. Clad only in her miniskirt, Gemma rubbed her arms to warm herself. "Could you walk me home, Elliot?"

I was a little taken aback, but I glanced at her shivering shoulders and said, "Come on, then."

Gemma's place wasn't too far from my apartment. After I took her home, she asked me to wait downstairs. When she returned, she was holding a slice of cake. "It's my birthday today."

I didn't take sweet treats because Alora didn't, but when I saw the tentative, expectant look in Gemma's eyes, I graciously accepted the cake.

Upon returning to my apartment, I was surprised to find Alora waiting for me on the couch. When she looked at me, the smile in her eyes felt forced. "How was the blind date today, Elliot?"

I put the cake in the fridge and resisted the urge to straighten her mussed hair. Logan was meant to come home from Amerulea today. The fact that Alora was here already told me something.

At the very least, Logan hadn't come back as scheduled.

"Is something wrong, Alora?"

She responded by kissing me passionately.

She'd never taken charge like this before, and for a moment, I lost myself too. I carried her into the bedroom, which still smelled like her favorite scent. As usual, she scattered her clothes everywhere.

I had no idea why Alora was here to see me, only that she needed me now. She'd chosen me because I was young and content with what I had.

We spent the night tangled in the sheets. It was only when her phone rang that she seemingly snapped out of her daze and left my embrace.

She picked up the call, and her face immediately lit up with a faint smile. She hinted at me to keep quiet, then pulled on her dressing robe and padded toward the living room.

I lay in bed, my arms still open as if waiting to embrace her. A bitter laugh bubbled up my throat. I knew the kind of woman Alora was, so why did I still fall in love with her over and over again?

I grabbed my phone from the nightstand and booked myself a plane ticket to Frinsor.

The month before, I’d received an acceptance letter from a school in Pareus. But because of Alora, I hadn’t gotten around to turning it down.

Now, everything seemed to have fallen into place.

Perhaps Alora had forgotten the time she got drunk and told me about her romantic history with Logan in Pareus. I’d buried my face in the crook of her neck and quietly told her that I wanted to visit Pareus someday too.

Now, I finally had the chance to see the city that held the memories of her youth.

Alora left, as expected. She'd resumed her usual cool indifference and tossed me a set of car keys before she left. “They’re yours.”

It was both a gift and payment for my silence.

"I won't be needing them."

It was the first time I'd refused her gift. She cocked a brow and eyed the keys that fell on the floor.

“What is this? Are you upset with me?” She caressed the vivid kiss mark near my collar and teased, “Don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen in love with me, Elliot. You know our relationship is purely transactional.”

I opened my mouth to say something, only to smile bitterly in the end. I understood the warning in her tone, but she underestimated my love for her. How could I bring myself to ruin the happiness she'd been waiting for?

“Safe travels.” I kissed her on the forehead like I always did, my lips brushing the strands of hair that framed her face.

Alora lay on my chest, her lashes fluttering. I couldn't tell what she was thinking.

It was Monday, and I headed to work at the company as usual. I would hand in my resignation that day and leave Alora’s life for good.

Leaving her undisturbed was my final blessing.

However, Alora didn’t show up for the regular Monday meeting.

Logan's younger brother had taken over the family business, leaving no place for Logan even if he returned.Alora kept Logan's position in her company for him. She'd made up her mind to give him 40% of the company shares, practically handing over the reins to him. He'd rescued her company before. Now, she had nothing else to offer him, only a repayment of his favor. As for Elliot, she'd managed to find out his whereabouts from Gemma and learned that he'd gone to Frinsor. All Gemma told her was that she wished Elliot only happiness.Just like that, Alora traveled to Pareus countless times, all so she could tell Elliot she loved him in person. But now that she had, she was met with only silence.…"Can we start over, Elliot? Let me love you for a change," she begged me with tears in her eyes.I shook my head. "You saved me once, Alora, and I've nothing to give you but love. Our story never began with love. You wanted a companion, and I wanted money. At the end of the day, what we

Alora sought out Gemma, only to earn a hostile look from the latter. No longer did Gemma greet her warmly by her first name. Instead, she impassively demanded that Alora state her business.Alora asked Gemma for Elliot's whereabouts, but Gemma shot her a grimace. "Seriously, Alora, how low can you stoop? How long will you continue to torment Elliot for? Did you set me up with him so you could use me to hurt him?"Well, you thought wrong. I actually like him, and I have since college. He might just be a lover you keep for fun, Alora, but to me, he'll always be the college senior who sits at the front of the class."Gemma's voice began to crack at the end. She was even more devastated than Alora. While Alora could pull out all the stops in her frantic search for Elliot, Gemma was powerless to do so.She could tell Elliot was still in love with Alora when he left.Alora returned home crestfallen, Gemma's words replaying in her head like a broken record. For the first time, she was se

"I spent a long time searching for you after you left, but I didn't know where you'd gone." Alora was bare-faced, and she looked even paler against her brown coat."Alora, you—""Shh, don't speak. Let me look at you, alright?"She sat with me under the tree and watched as the maple leaves fell around us. She seemed to be lost in thought as she twirled a leaf stem between her fingers. "Before we met, I hated this city. Pareus took away my freedom and robbed me of love."It seemed every misfortune in my life started in Pareus. But now, seeing you carve a life for yourself here, I'm suddenly thankful for it. This city led me to you. Do you still hate me, Elliot?"I opened my mouth to say something, but words eluded me in the end.A hurt look crossed Alora’s face. She leaned into the bench, a mark around her ring finger a clear sign of where her engagement band had been."I used to think of you as just another toy. If I'm being honest, I never took you seriously back in the day. But

I hailed a cab right away and headed to the company. It was only eight in the evening. The lights in the company were still on, and some of my former co-workers were working overtime. The lights in Alora's office were still on, too. Almost without realizing it, I found myself standing outside her door. Was she working overtime? She was always working too hard."Just be honest with me, Alora. What is your relationship with Elliot?"It was Logan. He was seated on the couch, and his eyes were rimmed with red.Alora had her back turned to me. All I heard was her voice as she replied, "Oh, him? He's just a pet I picked up and toyed with when I got bored. Don't tell me you're jealous."I peeked through the gap in the door and saw Logan's stormy expression. Grinning, Alora pounced on him like a playful kitten and kissed the corner of his mouth. "He's nobody. All I did was give him a bit of pocket money, and that was enough to make me his god."It's all your fault, anyway. I'd never hav

"Excuse me." I brushed past Logan and left him alone with Alora in the corridor. Our get-together ended on a sour note.Gemma offered to drive me home. She flashed me her usual mischievous smile. "You walked me home the last time, Elliot, and it so happens that you didn't come in a car this time."Under Alora's dark, baleful gaze, I opened the car door and slid into the passenger seat of Gemma's car.Gemma was a good driver, but she spent the entire drive talking about Alora. From the bits of information she'd fed me, I managed to piece together Logan and Alora's history.Alora was not the Sheffields’ only child; her younger brother had died not long after his birth. Her mother had soon been admitted to a care facility after crying every day over the loss of her child and going mad with grief.Alora's father was weak and a hopeless cause. He had no choice but to leave the company to his relatives.Fortunately, Alora was razor-sharp and highly intelligent. She'd gotten her high s

  • Too Late to Love Me   Chapter 7

Alora opened the conversation by asking Gemma and me how far along we were in our relationship.Gemma's smile was a little forced as she cut me a look out of the corner of her eye.I finished slicing Gemma's steak, then answered slowly, "We're still getting to know each other."Alora probably just wanted to know whether I was following the path she’d planned for me. So I decided to give them the reassurance they wanted.Logan remained expressionless as usual. He sat at the table and listened while we talked, occasionally checking and replying to messages on his phone."The both of you look good together. You should consider taking the relationship further.” Alora stared at me evenly, her words heavy with implication.I nodded. "I should thank you for introducing me to Gemma. I'll make this opportunity count."Confusion flickered in Gemma's eyes. She crumpled the napkin in her hand, then lowered her gaze to the sliced steak on her plate.Logan answered a phone call and excused h
