Chapter 3

Penulis: Nameless
I spotted the pizzeria's wooden sign before I even reached the place. Mom had painted it herself years ago, and now it was lying in the muddy street.

Ruby stood under Nigel's umbrella with one hand over her nose, looking disgusted as pans, bowls, and other kitchen equipment were carried out of the pizzeria.

"Nigel, this place is filthy. Are you sure you can really turn it into a pastry shop?"

"Don't worry, Ruby. I'll have the whole place sanitized. I'll even have them rip out the floor tiles and replace them. By the time we're done, you won't be able to smell any grease or food at all."

His voice was warm and gentle, nothing like the way he'd yelled at me the night before.

I pushed through the crowd and rushed toward the entrance. That was when I spotted the old wooden box sitting right on top of a pile of trash.

That box was everything to me. Inside was the secret pizza sauce recipe Mom had left me, along with a wooden spatula Nigel had carved for me with a pocketknife when he was 15.

He'd cut his hand while making it, but he'd still smiled and said, "Sasha, one day you'll be the chef, and I'll be your helper."

I rushed over without thinking and reached for the box.

"Sasha Tenney! What are you doing?"

Nigel grabbed me by the back of my collar and yanked me away. I lost my balance and fell straight into a greasy puddle. My knee slammed against a broken tile, and pain shot through my leg.

"Nigel, she's filthy! Don't let her touch me!" Ruby screamed and pressed closer to Nigel.

He immediately pulled Ruby behind him and looked down at me. "Sasha, have you lost your mind? I warned you last night. I'm shutting this place down whether you like it or not!"

I ignored him and scrambled toward the wooden box on my hands and knees.

But I was too late. A garbage truck was already backing toward the pile. Its massive mechanical arm came down and scooped up the trash.

"No! Stop! Something my mom left me is in there!"

I screamed until my voice cracked and tried to rush toward the truck.

Nigel wrapped both arms around my waist and held me back. "Enough, Sasha! It's just a pile of junk. Do you really have to make a scene and embarrass yourself in front of everyone?"

A sharp crack split the air. I could only watch as the wooden box splintered under the mechanical arm.

The wooden spatula, tied to so many memories of growing up with Nigel, snapped clean in half and tumbled into the reeking garbage truck. Mom's yellowed recipe book went with it, crushed beyond saving.

The world around me seemed to go quiet.

I stopped crying out and stopped struggling. I just let Nigel drag me over to the side of the road.

Seeing me suddenly go so still seemed to scare him. He let go, and for the first time, he sounded a little panicked.

"Sasha, don't do this. It was just a recipe book. I'll hire a great chef to put together another one for you. And that stupid wooden spatula? I'll go to the mall tomorrow and buy you one made of solid gold. Okay?"

I slowly looked up at the man I'd loved for 20 years.

He had no idea there had been a letter tucked inside that recipe book, written to him by his mother before she died.

I'd kept that letter safe for 10 years. I'd planned to give it to him next month for his 30th birthday, hoping it would finally help him let go of something he'd been carrying for years.

Now it was all gone.

I suddenly smiled. "Sure, Nigel. Solid gold. Don't forget."

My smile made him shiver. He reached out to touch my face, but I turned away before he could.

"Go back to that empty Porsche Panamera of yours and enjoy your high-class life where no one smells too 'low-class' for you," I said. Then I turned and strode into the restaurant kitchen, leaving Nigel behind in the snow, crying out after me.That was the last time I ever spoke to him. After that day, Nigel seemed like a different person. He stopped coming after me, but he never went back home either.I heard he sold off everything he owned back home and rented a basement apartment in Pavrelle's market district. He spent his days wandering the streets. He traded his expensive custom suits for an old coat faded from countless washes.Every day, he bought cheap ingredients from a neighborhood grocery store, went back to his basement, and tried to make pizza from scratch.Nothing ever came out right. It was either burned or so salty it was almost bitter. He forced himself to eat it anyway. He would eat until he threw up, then start eating again. Eventually, his stomach started ble

Nigel's hands were covered in small knife cuts, and blood had stained the wooden handle red."Sasha, I made you another one. It's not as nice as the old one, but I'll keep practicing until I can make one you like."He looked at me, a hint of hope in his eyes.I looked down at the bloodstained wooden spatula and suddenly found the whole thing ridiculous."Do you really think this makes up for what you did, Nigel?"I looked him straight in the eye."When you were protecting Ruby, you treated my recipe book like it was garbage. Now that you know she lied to you, you come running back and carve me another spatula."You don't love me. You just can't stand being lied to, and you can't stand that your loyal little lapdog stopped coming whenever you called."Nigel went pale and shook his head desperately. "No! I really do love you! I was just too stupid before. I didn't realize how I truly felt about you—""Enough!" I snapped, hurling the wooden spatula at his feet."You keep saying

I was smiling, genuinely happy in a way Nigel hadn't seen in years. The greasy apron was gone, and so was the smell of the pizzeria that always clung to me. Standing under the bright lights, I looked so different that he almost didn't recognize me."Sasha…"His voice shook as he stumbled toward me.The second I heard him, my smile disappeared.I turned to look at him. His face was covered in stubble, and his eyes were bloodshot. To me, though, he looked like a complete stranger.Nigel hurried toward me and reached out to pull me into his arms, but Luke Eyre, the Valennian head chef beside me, stepped between us."Sir, what are you doing?"Luke frowned and blocked Nigel from getting any closer.Nigel ignored him completely. His eyes stayed fixed on me, quickly turning red."Sasha, I finally found you. Please come home with me. I got rid of Ruby, and the Barnetts are bankrupt now. I made them pay for what they did to you!"He rambled on, begging me with all his usual pride gon

Three months after I left, Nigel's life was a mess. His stomach problems kept getting worse. No one else could make the kind of soup that settled his stomach the way mine did.Ruby tried cooking for him a few times, but her obsession with cleanliness made it a struggle. She wore three pairs of medical gloves just to chop vegetables, and whatever she made was practically inedible.Nigel also started losing sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, all he could see was the empty look in my eyes as I watched the wooden box get crushed. He searched everywhere for me and contacted everyone he could think of, but all he learned was that I'd closed all my accounts back home and vanished without a trace. Then one night, Nigel left a private club after dinner with some clients. He drove through a run-down block packed with cheap eateries and food trucks. He glanced out the window and caught sight of a familiar figure. He slammed on the brakes.Ruby was sitting at a table beside a food truck

The apartment was eerily quiet, and the sour smell of spoiled food hung in the air.Nigel frowned and called out without thinking, "Sasha, what did you leave out?"No one answered. He changed into his house slippers and walked into the living room. That was when he realized all my things were gone. The throw pillows I always left lying around, the clothes I usually hung up to dry, even my toothbrush by the bathroom sink had disappeared. His heart skipped a beat, and a chill ran down his spine. He hurried to the dining table and spotted the note beneath the apartment key."The soup's on the stove. Have it while it's hot."My handwriting was as neat as ever, but the message suddenly felt cold. His hand started to shake. He rushed into the kitchen and pulled the lid off the pot.His favorite chicken noodle soup was inside, but it had been sitting there for three full days. Green mold covered the surface, and the stench made his stomach turn.Nigel doubled over the sink and thre

"Ruby's still waiting for you. Better get back to her before she catches a whiff of my 'low-class' smell," I said.I braced myself against the wall and got to my feet, careful not to put too much weight on my injured leg.Ruby walked over and held out a tissue, a smug look in her eyes. "Sasha, don't blame Nigel. He's only trying to help you. If you smell like a pizzeria every day, who'd want to marry you?"I didn't take the tissue. I just looked her straight in the eye. "Ruby, you'd better hope you can spend the rest of your life without ever setting foot in a kitchen."Then I turned and limped out into the rain.Nigel shouted after me, "Sasha Tenney! If you walk away today, don't expect me to ever let you back in!"I didn't turn around or slow down.Back at the apartment, I sorted through my things. In the end, all I took were a few clothes I wore regularly and my acceptance letter from Valenne Culinary Academy. I left everything else behind.I took one last look around the a
