As kids, training had always been required whenever Rose visited her mother. With Tristan around, though, it never felt like work. He somehow turned every drill into a game, even on the days her muscles burned and all she wanted was to drop straight to the floor and stay there.

She never imagined she would actually need any of that training one day.

Trouble had never come looking for her before until today.

Cruz stood frozen in the kitchen, staring at Rose like she was someone he had never met.

  • Too Late to Regret: Claimed by my Stepbrother   Chapter 14 – Cruz’s unexpected arrival

Her mother's call came early, slicing through the morning quiet like a blade."Rose, Jason and Tristan keep saying we shouldn't come to your graduation. We can't accept that."Sadness pressed heavy in Rose's chest, a weight she couldn't shake loose. More than anything, she wanted her family from Manhattan there on such an important day.She wanted to see their faces in the crowd, her mother and step father’s proud smile, Jason and Jasper’s knowing grin, just as her other cousins. She wanted to celebrate with them, to have them witness this moment she'd worked so hard for.But fear held her back. What if Cruz changed his mind if he found out about them? What if everything she had been planning fell apart before she could finish it?"Mom, please." Her voice came out thinner than she wanted. "I promise I'll make it up to you."It wasn't what Cassie wanted to hear. "Rose, you've been away so long." The tearful ache in her mother's voice squeezed Rose's heart hard, wringing it like a wet r

  • Too Late to Regret: Claimed by my Stepbrother   Chapter 13 - I should pay her a visit

"It's Cruz's girlfriend, the same one from the recording. But I gave her triple what she gave me."Rose ended up narrating everything, and the more she talked, the more she feared the look in Tristan's eyes. That cold, flat stillness that settled over his face like frost creeping across a windowpane."I should pay her a visit."His voice was calm, too calm, and that was the part that made her stomach knot.He still couldn't believe Rose had gotten even. Yes, they used to train together, but he hadn't seen her in over three years. How could he be sure she was still as strong as she claimed? The Rose he remembered had been toughened up by their training but time had a way of softening people. He'd seen it happen to the best of men.Besides, Rose was kind, too kind for her own good."No, Tris." She reached across the table, her fingers brushing his wrist. "She's a pregnant woman. What I did was enough."Even Rose would have done more if Cruz hadn't shown up when he did. In that moment, s

  • Too Late to Regret: Claimed by my Stepbrother   Chapter 12 - Rose, don’t even try to lie to me

Tristan had shown up at Rose’s office a full hour early, the warm container of freshly made lasagna still giving off that rich, cheesy smell she had always loved. The second he stepped inside, though, his eyes moved over the room and his whole face tightened. The place was bare, cold, and empty. Nothing about it felt like her.The sight pulled something sharp and aching through his chest. It was obvious she had stopped making space for herself. Every bit of her energy had gone into that bastard, rearranging her whole life around a man who didn’t deserve even a second of it.His jaw flexed hard. He pulled out his phone and made a quick call. In under thirty minutes a small team arrived and got to work.Even if she only had a few weeks left in this office, Tristan wanted the room to feel like somewhere she could actually breathe. Somewhere that could settle her after a rough day instead of boxing her in with four dead walls.Soon her favorite flowers filled tall vases around the room, s

This was not the soft, quiet woman he thought he knew.Rose had always looked fragile to him, the kind of person who bruised easy and spoke soft. He had honestly expected Jessica to be the one stirring things up, not Rose pinning his pregnant girlfriend by the hair and slapping her without a second of hesitation. The moment Rose’s grip loosened, Jessica tore free and threw herself straight into Cruz’s arms, clutching at his shirt.“Cruz, I was just hungry. I wanted the food she made, but she du

  • Too Late to Regret: Claimed by my Stepbrother   Chapter 10 – Like child’s play

Rose raised a brow, caught somewhere between amusement and pure disgust. Some people truly had no shame at all.Faced with Jessica, regret filled Rose’s heart. She almost regretted coming back last night but the information she got last night and this morning were all worth it.“Why don’t you go right ahead? If your brother calls off the wedding, yeah, I’ll be hurt for a while, but trust me, I’ll get over it and move on.”It was just as she was hurt when she eavesdropped on Cruz’s conversation with Romeo but the pain was healing slowly and she was sure to get over it soon.“Feelings heal with time, and as for money, I’m not short on it, and I’ve never taken a single cent from him, so I don’t see what I’d be losing here.”Jessica stood frozen, mouth half-open. At the same time, envy burned hot in her chest every time her eyes landed on Rose. The girl was beautiful, so beautiful that Jessica had once wanted nothing more than to look exactly like her. Rose might not know but Jessica ha

  • Too Late to Regret: Claimed by my Stepbrother   Chapter 9 – Morning, sister-in-law

“Romeo, everything worked out exactly the way we planned. At first I was scared Cruz might actually be in love with the spoiled princess, but once he took me in and introduced me as his sister, he came straight back to make love to me. The spoiled brat doesn’t have a clue.” Rose went ice-cold, the words slamming into her like a physical blow. Was she really a spoiled brat? Yes, she had her family’s love and support, but Rose took her studies seriously and never did anything to put her parents in an uncomfortable position. Aside from when she insisted on getting married to Cruz after he proposed to her, she never disobeyed her father. The thought of the engagement made her subconsciously look at her ring finger. She would have loved to discard the 10k dollar ring there and then but that would make Cruz suspicious. She would just endure the cold metal on her ring finger for now. What did not add up was Romeo. He was Cruz’s best friend, the same man Cruz had poured his heart out to
