Julia’s POV

I stood backstage, aghast at what I’d just seen.

I couldn’t believe this!

She’d stolen my presentation! All that hard work I’d done. All that time and energy.

And now it was my turn to go on stage.

The slides were automated, so as I walked onto the stage, my first slide popped up. Of course, it was an exact replica of the slide they’d just seen.

MY stolen slide.

My palms were sweaty and my heart raced. I could see the academic panel whispering amongst themselves. I opened my mouth to say something, but my mouth was too dry.

“This is academic misconduct,” a member of the academic panel spoke up. “It’s plagiarism. The presenter is to leave the stage immediately.”

“I agree,” another professor spoke up, his voice dripping with impatience. “Stealing another colleague's work is irreproachable.”

I turned to leave, because what else could I do? I was so humiliated. Yes, he had stolen my work, but that’s not what it looked like. It looked like I’d stolen his work, and the

Julia’s POVAndrew led me off the dance floor, clearly irritated at the sight of Charlotte.I was irritated too. The mere presence of her had broken our spell. We were no longer dancing, no longer caught up in each other’s eyes.Just like that, she’d ruined our perfect moment. Back at the table, Andrew excused himself to get another drink. His entire demeanor had shifted. He was visibly rattled and annoyed.Across the room, I saw Charlotte make a beeline right for me.“Julia,” she gushed. “You look spectacular. Really. My god, darling. What a dress.”I glared at her. I highly doubted her compliment was sincere. But she pulled out a seat and sat down.“Where’s Andrew?” she asked. Glancing towards the bar, I saw that he was standing with two other men, in some sort of deep discussion.Well, so much for the attentive and doting Andrew, I thought to myself.“Let me get us a glass of champagne,” Charlotte said. “I’m afraid I owe you an apology.”Before I could argue, Charlotte scurried awa

Julia’s POVAndrew looked so cute, with his hand outheld for me. It took me a moment to fully absorb what he was asking.Andrew had never danced with me at an event, no matter how many times I’d asked. So I’d always been left to stand alone in the corner, watching people twirl around the dance floor, longing to be one of those couples.“Yes,” I told him, rising from my seat. The whole evening had been more than I ever could have hoped for. It was magical, and there were times throughout dinner when I’d completely forgotten there were other people around.I was now more sure than ever that I had to tell Andrew how I really felt. I was prepared for him to turn me down, but then at least I’d know. And I could start moving on.It wasn’t what I wanted though, of course. I wanted him to say that he felt the same way about me. I wanted him to confess that he’d made a terrible mistake, and that he regretted it deeply. Was I just fantasizing? It could be. But I didn’t care. I was caught up in

  • Too Late to Regret, The Substitute Wife Left   Chapter 91: The One Who Got Away

Andrew’s POVThe moment I saw Julia, I lost myself. She sauntered towards me, her eyes locked on mine, through the throngs of other people. But as she approached, there was no one else in the world as far as I was concerned.I literally couldn’t take my eyes off her.I had to actually blink, unsure that it was her.She looked completely different, but still somehow the same. Her gorgeous dress swung as she walked, the fur wrap held snugly around her shoulders. She looked like she just stepped right out of the pages of a castle.I knew, right then and there, that I had to win her back. I didn’t care what I had to do. I didn’t care how long it took. I would do anything. I would spend the rest of my life trying if I had to.She was the one who got away. That much was clear. She’d been mine but I’d let her go.And I wasn’t going to let that happen twice. She made a joke about ‘cleaning up’ nicely. But she had no idea how beautiful she really was. Walking into the ballroom with her on my a

Julia’s POVThe flight went surprisingly quick, partly because I dozed off for a bit. The next thing I knew, I was in a cab on my way to the Ritz. The Ritz was the fanciest hotel in town, and I’d always wanted to stay there. So I’d splurged, deciding to treat myself. The lobby was all white granite, with a gleaming chandelier. Everything about the hotel spoke of elegance and wealth. I felt richer just standing in the lobby.A bell hop took my small suitcase, tagging it so someone could bring it up to my room. After I checked in, I made my way to the high floor and entered my room.It literally took my breath away, with floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the downtown core of the city. The room was spacious and everything in it was high end, from the plush carpet to the faucets in the bathroom. Wishing I had more time to truly enjoy the room, I glanced at the clock and realized that I was already running late.So I immediately set about preparing myself for the fundraising gala.I

Julia’s POVBy the time we got to the Gucci store, we only had one hour left until closing. But Mira told me not to worry; they would stay open later for us if needed.“So, tell me about this fashion emergency,” Mira said.I told her about the phone call with Andrew, and the last minute invite to the school fundraiser.“Sounds like you’re going on a date with the man you were cursing to hell and high water the other day,” Mira said, taking a seat and motioning for the sales associate to bring over a rack of clothes.“What?” I balked, startled by her words. “It’s not a date. It’s for Oliver.”“If you say so,” she said, as she started combing through the rack of dresses. “Here, try this one.”I was mildly annoyed though at Mira. She was insinuating that I was using this fundraiser as some sort of excuse to see Andrew. Which simply wasn’t the case. I was going because Oliver wanted me to go.“If you have something to say, then just say it,” I told her, a little firmer than I’d intended.

  • Too Late to Regret, The Substitute Wife Left   Chapter 88: School Fundraiser

Julia’s POVAndrew had called me a total of five times already that morning. Staring at my phone, I watched it buzz again.I refused to answer it. I couldn’t.I couldn’t talk to the man who had used me not once, but twice. But even so, I missed him. It was a hard pill to swallow, but it was the honest truth. My life was going great. My practice was booming. I was starting a custody battle for Oliver. I had good friends and an active social life.I just couldn’t overlook the fact that something was missing.I was lonely. It was easy to fill my days with activities and work and socializing. But at the end of every day, I found myself alone in my villa. And although I’d once relished my independence, I was now starting to crave a true, meaningful relationship. What good was all this success if I had no one to share it with?Soon, I’d get Oliver. I was pretty sure of it, thanks in part to my shark of a lawyer, Miranda. But would Oliver be enough? Would I still be lonely with him around?
