Chapter 3

Author: Flora Johnson
"What are you doing here?"

"This is my house."

I looked at Reese and suddenly felt tired.

Reese's face darkened even more. He grabbed my arm and tried to drag me upstairs.

I wrenched free.

"Do you really have to do this?"

Reese's anger flared, and he lowered his voice to a hiss.

"You could've come back any other day. Why did you have to pick Layla's birthday?"

Just then, Layla came over and tugged at Reese's sleeve.

"Reese, don't be so harsh with Ivy."

Her long dark hair was loosely pinned up, and she looked the picture of innocence.

"Ivy, please don't be mad. It's all my fault. It's my birthday, and I didn't want outsiders interrupting, so Reese picked this place.

"I was being greedy. This is your home. I'm the one who should leave."

With that, she wiped her tears and started to go, but Reese caught her arm.

"I planned all of this for you. If the guest of honor leaves, what's the point?"

Reese coaxed her gently.

Then he turned, took a deep breath, and fixed me with a dark stare.

"See how considerate Layla is? And look at you—not an ounce of generosity!

"I don't have feelings like that for Layla. Stop making things hard for her. Once we're married, I'll cut ties with her. Stop being so difficult."

Since when did I need to pick a day to come back to my own home?

But I really didn't want to be around them, so I turned to leave.

Layla grabbed me.

"Ivy, since you're here, why don't you stay for dinner?"

She carried herself like the lady of the house.

I acted like I hadn't heard and kept walking.

"Can't you hear Layla talking to you?"

Reese strode forward, clamped a hand around my arm, and blocked my way.

"Layla's nice enough to invite you to dinner, and this is the attitude you give her?"

"So?"

I raised an eyebrow at him, my gaze cold.

That set him off completely.

"Ivy, when someone offers you an olive branch, you take it. Don't push this until you embarrass yourself!"

"No, thanks."

I shook off his grip and headed for the front door.

It was the first time in seven years I'd gone against Reese's wishes.

Seeing me change like this left Reese rattled.

He raised his voice and shouted at my back.

"Ivy! If you walk out that door today, the wedding's off!

"Don't forget, you're carrying my child! Where else could you possibly go?"

I stopped at the door and turned to look at him.

I'd loved Reese for seven years.

I'd fallen for him the first time I saw him.

When we first met, the De Luca family was at the height of its power, and Reese was just the Moretti family's illegitimate son, his position hanging by a thread.

I was the one who fought off fierce opposition inside my own family, poured every De Luca resource into him, and bled beside him through every fight until he earned the position he had now.

I used to think the child inside me was proof of our love.

Only now did I see that to him, this baby was just another tool to keep me under his thumb.

"Then cancel it."

I didn't look back. I walked straight out the door.

I'd longed for this wedding for so long. Every time he'd threatened to cancel it, I'd given in.

But now, I didn't care anymore. I didn't want the wedding, and I didn't want him.

Irritation gnawed at Reese. He instinctively moved to go after me, but Layla called out from behind him.

Third-Person POV

Layla looked toward the open door and sighed.

"You've really spoiled Ivy rotten."

Reese froze.

Layla lowered her eyes, looking understanding and long-suffering.

"You should go after her and calm her down. Ivy loves you so much. If your wedding fell apart because of me, I'd never forgive myself."

At that, the panic and unease in Reese's heart instantly gave way to anger.

Layla was right. He'd indulged Ivy too much, and it had made her more and more spoiled and unreasonable.

Ivy loved him so much. How could she really agree to call off the wedding?

Walking out was just the oldest trick there was—the kind of ploy women always used to make a man chase after them.

In just a few months, the underworld was turned upside down.To get revenge on Reese, Layla sold out the Moretti family.Already cut off from the steady flow of De Luca support, the Morettis were then dragged by Layla into a war that bogged them down.Moretti strongholds fell one after another, and their best soldiers suffered heavy losses. The Morettis' power shrank drastically, nothing like its heyday back when they'd worked with the De Lucas.Meanwhile, I used the stretch of time when Reese was too busy to pester me to consolidate my power and take over all of the De Luca family's affairs.Plenty of Dons from other families reached out with offers of alliance. I kept every one of them at a measured distance.Love was no longer a necessity in my life. One night, as I walked out the gates of the De Luca estate to head back to my apartment, I ran into Reese. His gaze settled on me, a mix of guilt, regret, and an exhaustion he couldn't hide."Ivy."His voice was hoarse."I k

I raised an eyebrow at Layla. She looked far more worn down than she had a month ago.She was nothing like the polished woman she used to be. After I left, Reese had dropped her.And with the De Luca family constantly pressuring the Romanos, her own family had cast her aside too.She glared at me, her eyes full of resentment."Ivy, how can you be so shameless? Reese doesn't even want you anymore. Why are you still clinging to him?"I threw the flowers Reese had sent me right in her face."Take a good look at who's chasing who!"Actually, perfect. Since you want him so badly, you can have his flowers. And while you're at it, keep him on a leash so he'll stop bothering me!"Layla's face stiffened. Then, as if something had occurred to her, she suddenly laughed."Don't flatter yourself. He's only coming after you because you're pregnant with his child. Reese doesn't want to give up his baby."As she spoke, Layla rested a hand lightly on her stomach, looking smug."Well, now I'm

After dinner, I had a long, comfortable nap. When I got up, Reese was still waiting outside the estate. The moment I opened the door, he hurried toward me.A night of rushing around had left his eyes bloodshot, and exhaustion radiated from every part of him."Ivy, how could you just leave without a word?"The baby... the baby's gone. Why didn't you tell me?"I watched coldly as he fell apart."Did you deserve to know?"Then I walked around him."Ivy, don't be like this."Reese followed close behind me."Do you know how much I was looking forward to this baby?"I don't have feelings for Layla at all. I only see her as a little sister I need to look after."The proposal was just a ceremony I promised her. You're the one I love. You're the only woman I'll ever marry. I can't live without you."So we lost the baby. Ivy, we still have a future. We'll have lots more children..."Hearing that, I couldn't take it anymore. I stopped and turned to face him."We're over, Reese. Ple

The moment Layla walked in, she threw herself into Reese's arms. But Reese shoved her away."Don't touch me."Layla fell to the floor, staring up at Reese. He was always so composed, but now he was on the verge of losing control.Reese looked down at her, his eyes churning with hatred."You knew all along, didn't you? That day in the hallway, you ran into Ivy on purpose. You're the reason she lost the baby."Layla scrambled up and stumbled back two steps, her back hitting the cold doorframe. Her meek, fragile mask cracked—but she pieced it back together in an instant. She pressed a hand to her chest, deliberately quickening her breath, her shoulders trembling slightly."Reese, how could you suspect me like that?"Her eyes quickly filled with tears."We grew up together. You said you'd protect me for the rest of my life! Have you forgotten?"Reese was silent for a moment. Then he crushed the report in his fist, shoved Layla out of his way, and stormed out the door.Layla sa

Get up already. The wedding's about to start!"No one answered, and a huge, nameless fear welled up in him.Irritated for no reason he could pin down, Reese kicked the bedroom door."Stop pretending. You're just upset because I proposed to Layla yesterday."I promise, our wedding today is going to be even bigger than Layla's proposal yesterday."The door banged open, and Reese froze in the doorway. The room was empty. All her things were gone."Ivy?"Reese's voice shook."Where are you?"No one answered. Ivy's POV"Miss De Luca, are you sure you want to cancel your marriage license application?"My hand trembled slightly as I held the form. The clerk could see I was hurting and gave my shoulder a gentle pat."Why don't you take some more time to think it over?"Besides, even to withdraw an application, the groom normally has to come in too. Where is he?"I gave a bitter smile."Dead. I'll sign it myself."Hearing that, the clerk didn't try to change my mind. She sighed, stamped the form, and slid it over to me.I'd just picked up the pen to sign when a message popped up on my phone."Ivy, get to Central Square, now! Reese is about to propose!"I agonized over it for a long time, but in the end, I went. The moment I stepped out of the car, I saw an endless stretch of pink balloons and roses in every color."Wow, this is so romantic.""Is someone proposing?""Has to be.
