LOGINRIVENNAS POV.
* * The entire hall stood silent as the new faces appeared. My eyes hadn’t left the first male who had slowly walked into the hall. His presence alone made the whole room shudder. Every gaze was fixed on him, and the hall came to a standstill.yet his eyes were on mine. The two males stood over six feet tall, dark-haired, and belonged to the Aralez lycan clan. They were known as one of the pure-breed lycans who had been alive since the time of dragons — the last of the pure moon beasts. They were bestial and cruel, showing no mercy to their prey. And right now, I was their prey. I couldn’t look away from the first male. Both were covered in robes made from bearskin. His companion wore brown, while the male I couldn’t tear my eyes from wore black bear fur. His eyes were a dark stormy grey that trapped me. My gaze roamed over his stubble, his dark beard, his sculpted jawline, and the scar that ran down his left eye. His hair was a shaggy dark cut that fell over his forehead, shadowing his eyes. His thick brows were furrowed as he stared at me like I was a phenomenon he’d never seen before. But I knew I was nothing more than prey. “We are the lycans from the Aralez clan,” he spoke, his deep voice warming my skin. “And you have come to collect what we are owed, me” I whispered, resigned.as the choosing hall erupted in gasps. “No, no, this doesn’t make sense…” Wren said as he tugged at me, finally pulling my eyes away from the first male. “Are you insane, Rivenna? The Aralez pack?! Those men will eat you alive, no doubt. So do not accept this bizarre proposal!” I couldn’t breathe or think as my brother stepped forward. Although frail, he still cared enough to stand up for me. “And are you the lycan king?” Ryson asked, unsure. We would have expected a whole company of lycans if he were. I watched as the two males shared a look before the first Lycan spoke again. “And if I am not, princeling?” My chest tightened with real fear and confusion. How was he not a king? His presence alone commanded the entire room. “Then this must be a joke. The proposal is to be met from a royal himself or it is not valid,” Ryson argued, clearly scared for my sake. “Yes, he was sent from the king,” the second male said. “He is the king’s strongest warrior and right-hand man, who has been given the power to bring his bride.” “She is mine!” Wren spoke out, his eyes blazing. His claim was so loud and shocking that even Bria’s eyes widened, anger twisting her features. Knowing their plan was going astray, she gulped roughly before rushing to my side. “Yes, Rivenna, you must not choose this man.” “The Aralez Lycans are barbaric in nature, and the things I have heard they do to females are horrible. You cannot!” an elder spoke. “And he is a mere guard, not the king. Look, I know me being here has made you insecure, Rivenna, but—” Bria said. I scoffed. They really must be desperate to try to talk me into marrying Wren. Wren came to my side, his hands gripping my shoulders, his gaze desperate as he raged. “I know this was a mistake. I just know you can never choose him over me, and I know your jealousy speaks loud because of Bria. Now I hear and see you. You have won these silly mind games, alright? You will be my priority, Rivenna, so choose me!” Wren snapped. “Does she not have a choice?” The room fell silent. Even as brutal and scary as this lycan male looked, he was giving me a choice? The male who was supposedly the strongest warrior from the Aralez Valley clan — the strongest beasts in the realm, one that could subdue this entire room in seconds — was giving me a choice. Was I making the right decision by inviting this beastly doom to my doorstep as a proposed mate? I took a sharp breath and held my gown. “Do not go, Rivenna. Stay here.” Wren came to me again, holding me tightly as I tugged my hand free. I then walked towards the two bulky Viking-like lycan beasts dressed in bear hide. The closer I got, the more I realized how much they towered over me and how great the size difference was. They could take me by force without a doubt. But something calm and steady urged me forward, to take the steps even the guards hadn’t dared. I swallowed a breath and spoke. “I am Rivenna Osborn, daughter of the Alpha Chief of the Onyx Pack… and I chose the black rose,” I said with a daring tone to the males watching me. “Rivenna,” he repeated. My name rolled off his tongue like a symphony that warmed my body. “I am Vaughn… and this is my second, Darian.” He gave no surname or anything else. “You do not trust me,” he said without hesitation. I watched as he reached into his coat and pulled out a scroll, which he handed to me. His hands were larger than my head. The mere touch of our fingers ignited something in me, making my legs feel weak, but I held myself upright. I took the scroll, opened it, and my stomach dropped. “What is it?” one of the elders asked as I gripped the scroll tightly. The walls felt like they were closing in as I turned to my brother. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t believe what I had just seen. My body felt like it was about to shatter into a million pieces, and my throat felt too heavy to speak. “It’s Father,” I finally managed. “He is dead.” “What? No, that cannot be true. He is lying. We cannot trust a glycan male from the valley! These beastly lycans must have killed him. Rivenna, listen to me,” Wren snarled. “I fought with your father against the flame beasts at the warline for the past year,” Vaughn said. “He was a brave man who held his own to the end as the flames consumed him.” Darian, the second lycan who had remained silent, held out a small chest. My brother stepped forward and took it. When I opened it, a gasp wracked through me at the sight of my father’s bloodied yet familiar crown and the rope bracelet I had made for him — the one he had never taken off. An item they wouldn’t have known to bring back if he were truly dead. I felt like I was shattering into a million pieces. In my last life, he hadn’t died in the war. He had come home. So what has changed in this new life? Oh holy gods… What have I done?“Crown Prince Vagnar, are you sure of your claims?” Elder Landen argued, panic in his tone.“Remember, this is to charge the shewolf Luna for almost killing your own nephew, and you're trying to say she's innocent?”“Yes, I am sure of my words, elder." He shrugged nonchalantly , earning shocked gazes from the crowd.None ever expected him not to be on Rivenna's side and be a witness.“Oh, you see, I had woken up with no maids in my room, and my eyes had then wandered in amazement when the snow began to fall.”I couldn't help my eyes trace my dear sister-in-law when she walked into the backyard. She had run recklessly to the pond, calling out for the naive boy who paid no mind. And a moment later I heard a splash. Looking over, I found Adrian had fallen into the pond.” He said so calmly. But Dahlia stood, seething at Vagnar's words. “Then why did you help? Why didn’t you do anything?” She questioned with gritted teeth.“As you can see, I was still incapacitated by that time, so I could
“So tell me, Mira, where were you when Adrian had left his room? Unless you had a hand in it."Rivenna's voice echoed through the hall just as the crowd erupted.Mira trembled, gulping down nervously as her eyes scanned the room, her desperate eyes searching towards Dahlia once more. And then, to King Vaughn's gaze, a deadly look that immediately made Mira's palms sweat.“Luna! That’s absurd to question her!” Elder Landen argued.“You wanted a trial yes? So I am giving you one” Rivenna replied. But Mira never could act brave under such intense scrutiny, as she collapsed under the Alpha's gaze, his cruel command taking over her thoughts, “Speak!” He roared telepathically.“Please truly forgive me, your grace." Mira said, kneeling on the floor. “I-I know I should have been with Adrian..." she stuttered."But I had just suddenly got sick, and I was very sick. After that,I threw up and went to rest in the servant’s quarters after putting the young master down in his room." She said quick
Rivenna wasn't sure how it was possible, how just one touch from the alpha had pulled her back from that dark abyss that consumed her mind. But the moment she had felt her body immediately calm from just his presence, and the fever had almost immediately disappeared.her mate's presence and scent calmed her, Vaughn didn't at all move an inch for hours. The maids were all wide-eyed with shock and bewilderment of Vaughn actions.Seeing the alpha king serving his Luna on the bed and serving her medicine, with no other servant interrupting her, nursing her through the nights till Rivenna held the strength to sit up on her bed in the morning. She pinched her nails in anxiety, quietly watching the Alpha from under her lashes.Could someone like this truly exist? Someone who cared for her?The times when she was sick, Wren had wholly avoided her."Let her be, she is nothing but an attention seeker," Wren would say.And instead treated her like she held a plague. She had expected the same thi
Rivenna hadn't expected the accusatory stares pushed so aggressively by dahlia. She had to catch herself at the last minute before her head hit the icy ground. She looked up to find a fear-stricken Dahlia, whose eyes widened as she raced to her son, holding him tight and hugging his unconscious body to hers while his chest heaves.Rivenna groaned, balancing herself back up just as Dahlia screamed, “my son! My precious son”“Dahlias I—”"Stay away from my son, you child killer." She screamed so aggressively, her eyes filled with hatred, holding her son, who jittered and shook."What? Dahlia, what are you talking about—" Her words died out seeing they weren't alone and eyes were all on her.The small crowd that had gathered immediately stood and gasped in silence and shock."The rumors were true about what happened back at Onyx Pack. She really did kill someone's child.""I heard it was her former lover's childhood friend and an innocent woman at that ,her jealousy made her push the wo
Rivenna's POV.Time and time again I've repeated to myself that this marriage was just a marriage of convenience. That I felt and should feel nothing for Vaughn Atticus.Yet I find myself breaking from just that kiss with him and Dahlia.Who was I kidding? That was his true mate. And if I hadn't come along and chose him in this life, they would be together, but I had destroyed their new life together. It was an unprecedented phenomenon in their life.I rushed towards the bathroom, sinking my head into the porcelain toilet. And pushing out the bitter churn of bile that had shifted and caused me discomfort. My anxiety, causing shivers, I immediately rushed, crouching under the hot showers, letting it fall over me.Why was I getting worked up over just a kiss? With Alpha's permission, Dahlia had the right to touch him when she wanted. She was his consort and mother of his child after all, yet that thought alone had driven my insides burning with a bitter haze.I needed an escape from my
Vaughn's POV.I couldn't understand it.I couldn't understand how Rivenna was still trying to give a fighting chance to her brother after the cruel scene. As I had been etched by the rejection that he had given her right in front of the watching crowd. I hated that even after all the time she had been hurt,She still held a heart of gold and a heart of forgiveness for her brother. Not when I couldn't help hating them, because anytime I thought of the Onyx Pack now, the only thing I wanted to do was raze it to the ground. And yet I could see that same emotion in her eyes.I could see the distrust she has for Bria and Wren because of their betrayal and lies. But still, she doesn't want to extend that emotion to her brother.I get it; maybe she loved her father and her family so much that she can't just see past the actual blood between them, but family does betray.I've experienced that enough times to know. My father had cruelly seen me as nothing but a monster. He had used daggers to
