The Oakfield estate looked exactly the same as it had the night Lillian walked out, yet to her, it felt like a completely different house. The grand iron gates opened automatically as her modest sedan drove up the long, winding driveway. She parked near the front entrance, turning off the engine and taking a deep breath before getting out.

She wasn’t here to move back in. She was here to collect the rest of her belongings and to deliver her terms to Nathaniel face-to-face.

She unlocked the front door with her key and stepped into the quiet foyer. The house felt cold, devoid of the warmth she had spent years trying to cultivate. She walked upstairs to the master bedroom, pulled a large suitcase from the closet, and began systematically packing her clothes, books, and personal mementos.

She was halfway through her jewelry box when she heard the sound of a sports car engine outside, followed by the heavy front door opening downstairs. Footsteps hurried up the grand staircase, and Nathaniel appeared in the bedroom doorway, still wearing his work suit but without his jacket.

He stopped, his eyes landing on the open suitcase on the bed. “What are you doing?”

“Packing,” Lillian said simply, not looking up as she wrapped a silver necklace in tissue paper.

“Lillian, please don’t do this,” Nathaniel said, walking into the room and standing at the foot of the bed. “I thought about what you said yesterday at the office. I know you’re angry, and you have every right to be. But moving out permanently isn’t the solution. We can make this work. We can live here together, comfortably. I’ll give you your space.”

Lillian finally looked up, her expression completely detached. “We are not making anything work, Nathaniel. I am moving back into my mother’s house permanently. My lawyer is already drafting a formal separation agreement.”

Nathaniel’s eyebrows pulled together. “A separation agreement? If we legally separate, does that count as a violation of the will’s clause?”

Lillian let out a quiet, mocking chuckle. “See? Within ten seconds, you brought it back to the money. To answer your question, no. My lawyer checked. As long as we do not finalize the dissolution of marriage within the next twelve months, the shares remain intact. The clause specifies divorce, not physical separation.”

Nathaniel visibly relaxed, a subtle sigh escaping his lips. “Okay. Okay, that’s good. If you need time away from me to heal, I understand. I can stay at a hotel or move into one of the penthouse apartments downtown so you can have the house.”

“No, Nathaniel,” Lillian said, closing the suitcase with a sharp click. “You don’t get to play the martyr here. You will stay in this house, and I will live my life elsewhere. But let’s lay down the ground rules for the next year, because you are going to follow them to the letter.”

Nathaniel straightened up, his corporate demeanor returning as he crossed his arms. “What kind of rules?”

“Rule number one,” Lillian said, stepping around the bed to face him directly. “You will not be seen in public with Vanessa Clarke. Not at dinners, not at charity galas, and definitely not entering or leaving her apartment. If a single photograph of the two of you hits the press this year, I will file for an expedited divorce the next morning, and your shares will be gone before the sun sets.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened. “Vanessa is part of my life, Lillian. You can’t expect me to just—”

“I can and I do,” Lillian interrupted, her voice sharp as steel. “You spent three years flaunting her in my face. For the next twelve months, she does not exist to the public. If she truly loves you for who you are and not your bank account, she can wait in hiding for a year. Let’s see how patient she is.”

Nathaniel remained silent, his eyes dark with frustration, but he didn't argue. He knew she held all the leverage.

“Rule number two,” Lillian continued. “You will provide a monthly allowance, but not for me. You will fund a full scholarship program at the city university’s nursing department under my name. You will pay for the tuition and books of twenty students who can’t afford it. Consider it your penance for making me drop out twice.”

Nathaniel looked at her, a flicker of genuine surprise passing through his eyes. “You’re not keeping the money for yourself?”

“I don’t want your money, Nathaniel. I want to build something real,” she said, her voice filled with a quiet dignity that made him shift uncomfortably. “Rule number three. When the twelve months are up, we will finalize the divorce quietly, with no contests, no media circus, and no legal battles. You will give me a clean break, and you will never contact me again.”

Nathaniel stared at her, looking at the sharp outline of her jaw, the determination in her clear blue eyes, and the complete lack of affection in her gaze. For three years, he had been accustomed to a wife who looked at him with adoration and desperate hope. Seeing her look at him with nothing but cold indifference stirred a strange, unfamiliar ache in his chest.

“And what if I don’t want to divorce you in a year?” Nathaniel asked suddenly, the words slipping out before he could stop them. “What if things change between us during this time?”

Lillian looked at him for a long moment, then picked up her suitcase from the bed. She walked past him toward the bedroom door, stopping just at the threshold to look over her shoulder.

“Nothing is going to change, Nathaniel,” she said softly. “You had three years to love me, and you chose to destroy me instead. Now, you get to watch me rise without you. Enjoy your empire. You paid a very high price for it.”

She walked down the stairs, her suitcase rolling smoothly behind her. She didn't look back at the grand chandeliers or the expensive paintings. She walked out the front door, got into her car, and drove away from the billionaire world, ready to conquer her own.

Chapter 1Lillian heard the front door open and felt her shoulders relax for the first time all day. She was not sure what made her do it.Maybe it was the strange feeling she had carried all day, that quiet anxiety in her chest that told her something bad was about to happen. She had spent the entire afternoon cooking jollof rice and grilled chicken, Nathaniel’s favourite. She had also cleaned the house from top to bottom, ironed his shirts, and left his evening clothes folded neatly on the bed. The same routine she had kept for three years. She and Nathaniel had met when she was thirteen and he was sixteen. He was the son of William Brooks, her father’s closest business associate.Back then, Nathaniel barely acknowledged her. But Lillian had fallen for him completely. She had carried that feeling all through her teenage years. When their fathers sat them both down at twenty and twenty-three and proposed the marriage arrangement, Nathaniel had agreed without much expression. His fath

Chapter 2Lillian sat on the cold marble floor for a long time. She did not know how long she had been there. Minutes? Hours? The divorce papers remained on the table, taunting her with their white edges and bold black letters.Dissolution of Marriage. She read those three words repeatedly until they blurred together. The house felt enormous without Nathaniel in it. It always did. Their home in Oakfield was a grand estate, a wedding gift from William Brooks. Five bedrooms, a private garden, a pool. Everything a young bride could want. Everything except a husband who didn't want to be there.Lillian slowly picked herself up from the floor. She walked to the bathroom, splashed cold water on her face, and stared at her reflection. Her eyes were swollen and red from crying. Her blonde hair was disheveled. She looked exactly how she felt.Pathetic.“Pull yourself together,” she whispered to herself. She gripped the edge of the sink and breathed slowly. In and out. In and out.Her phone ran

Chapter 3The next morning, her phone woke her up at seven. It was not her alarm. It was a call from a number she did not recognize. She almost ignored it, but something made her pick up.“Hello?” Lillian answered grudgingly.“Lillian Harper?” The female voice was almost too calm.“Yes. Who is this?”There was a short pause and then, “It’s Vanessa Clarke, Nathaniel's current girlfriend.”Lillian’s whole body went still. Of all the things she had expected this morning; her mother calling her for breakfast, maybe a follow-up from Nathaniel’s lawyers, this was not it.Lillian sat up slowly, her fingers tightening around the phone. “How did you get this number?” She asked.“That doesn’t matter,” Vanessa said. “I think we need to talk.”“I have nothing to say to you.”“Maybe not,” Vanessa replied. “But I have something to say to you. Something important. Something that will make this easier for both of us.”Lillian laughed, but it came out hollow. “Nathaniel told you already?”“He told me

  • Too late, Ex. NOW WATCH ME RISE   Chapter 4

Chapter 4Lillian did not invite him inside. Instead, she stepped out onto the front porch, pulling the door halfway closed behind her. She did not want her mother to listen to their conversation.Margaret Harper had never hidden her feelings about Nathaniel Brooks, and today was not the day for that conversation. The morning air was cool. Lillian crossed her arms and looked at him.Nathaniel stood a few feet away. Up close, he looked worse than she initially thought. The tiredness around his eyes was deep. His jaw was unshaven. He was still wearing the same shirt from last night with the top button undone.“You look terrible,” she said flatly. He almost smiled. “I couldn't sleep.”“That’s not my problem.” She tilted her head. “You said you needed to talk. So talk. You have five minutes.”Nathaniel exhaled and pushed both hands into his pockets. He looked at the ground for a second, then back at her. “I came to apologize.”Lillian stared at him confused. “For which part?” she asked.“

  • Too late, Ex. NOW WATCH ME RISE   Chapter 5

Chapter 5Lillian’s phone nearly slipped from her hand. “I’m sorry,” she said slowly. “Can you repeat that?”“Mr. William Brooks passed away early this morning,” attorney Gerald Haines repeated. “And you are named as a beneficiary in his will. We would like you to come in at your earliest convenience.”Lillian pressed her back against the kitchen wall. Her mind was moving in three directions at once.William Brooks was dead. The man who had arranged her marriage with Nathaniel. The man who, despite everything, had always treated Lillian with a strange kind of fondness that she never fully understood.Dead!?“When did it happen?” she asked.“Early this morning. Around four a.m.,” the attorney said. “He died from a cardiac arrest.”Four a.m. Lillian thought about Nathaniel showing up at her mother’s door looking like he had not slept. Now she understood why.“Does Nathaniel know?” she asked before she could stop herself. There was a brief pause and then Gerald Haines said. “Mr. Brooks w

  • Too late, Ex. NOW WATCH ME RISE   Chapter 6:The Price of an Empire

The glass doors of the office building slid open, letting in a rush of humid city air that did nothing to cool the anger burning in Lillian’s chest. She walked quickly, her heels clicking against the concrete sidewalk. She needed to breathe. She needed to get away from the air of that conference room, away from the smell of expensive leather and greed, and most of all, away from Nathaniel.“Lillian! Wait!”She heard his voice over the rumble of midday traffic, but she didn’t slow down. She kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, navigating through the crowd of office workers on their lunch break.A hand caught her elbow, firm but careful not to pull too hard. She stopped abruptly and spun around, yanking her arm back. Nathaniel stood there, breathing heavily, his tie slightly crooked. The pristine facade he usually maintained was completely gone.“Do not touch me, Nathaniel,” Lillian said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Do not even come near me.”“Lillian, please, just look a
