The pulsing knot on Serakha's hand matched the rhythm of a soft heart while the ruined platform reflected the silver sliver under the quiet night. The wind had settled. The forest no longer whispered. Absolute quietness and observant stillness surrounded them.

Lucian moved carefully as he stepped onto the platform of stone. His boots set down gentle echoes that quickly disappeared into complete quiet.

Pointing at Serakha and Arden he said to them, “We are standing on top of something.”

Serakha nodded slowly. “I felt it too. A stirring. Like a memory waking up.”

While standing at the platform's edge Arden ran his hand gently across one of the stones covered by vines. Light from the silver engravings gleamed softly when he touched them.

“These symbols,” he said. “They’re old. Older than anything I’ve seen. The inscriptions on these stones create reactions because of the specific shape of the knot.

No mark of a name could be seen on the gates of the city.Only vines. And silence.Lucian set off first, crossing through the broken area. He barely had energy left, but he kept running steadily. Behind them, Serakha and Arden moved forward, followed by all of the others with care. The path was broken in many places, yet it connected the buildings. Some were hollow shells. Some wooden doors remained, ready for someone to step through them.Trees were planted along the streets these days. I’m not sitting above the city and forest, but crossing between them, like they share the same language.“Do you feel it?” Serakha quietly said, hardly raising her voice.Lucian nodded. “This place is dreaming.”They stayed a bit back to avoid waking the sleeping animal.---&n

A faint wind entered the room through the archway. It had the sound of someone inhaling and exhaling very gently. Still watching the picture on the wall, Lucian sat at the fire. The soft glow caused the shadows to slowly gild the ancient walls.Morning came without a sound.Though the stars had disappeared, the sky was still bright and clear up there. A pale blue sky with fluffy clouds laying lightly in the air.Awakening first, Serakha made her way out of the ark. She stood close to the entrance, peaking outside to see what was below. Looking back, Estel Crossing was a very small spot on the map. The road seemed to drape itself along the golden and green landscape. She said softly, “We’re so high up that we can see memory.”Arden joined her quietly. “So not at the end of our climb.”Lucian woke soon after. The carving was still held in his hand, and now it glowed with a gentler light like it was looking at them

The road to the south curved and maneuvered like a river of stone, weaving through fields of gold, which whistled with the morning breeze. Lucian went on ahead, boots sweeping the soft grass that grew on the edges of the trail. His hand was still benignly glowing — not to see by, but to hold on to.Serakha walked by him, hood low about her features, eyes gazing to the horizon with peaceful curiosity. Arden moved behind in slow, patient steps, ever listening, ever feeling the ground under their feet.Tirnen disappeared behind them, not as a place that was forgotten, but now as a place of light. A place breathing again.Lucian clutched the little wooden carving received from the old woman, rivers of fingers tracing the frayed edges of the symbol. He could still sense the memory in it though as in a faint voice calling from somewhere distant but familiar. The sun climbed higher and by the middle of the day they reached a rung of hump back hills where t

The mountain path was having fewer people now. Yet, it was the silence that was no longer that of emptiness. It was silence in listening. Of waiting.Lucian tiptoed through the stones, the light in his hand still warming and softly throbbing. Serakha and Arden, steady and calm, followed him. Now the city was behind them, still watching—still shining—but this; they walked on with a purpose. They didn’t speak much. The words did not feel necessary at the same time. The morning breeze was cutting but gentle, caressing their faces, as if a new day was touching them. All steps were a choice. A promise. After an hour of walking, they arrived at a curve where the trees start getting closer together, their branches silvered, reflecting the sun like mirrors. Here, they paused.“Do you hear that?” Serakha asked.Lucian turned his head. There was an air. Not a voice. Not music. But something familiar. It is the feeling like pages

Shaking stopped, yet the quiet afterwards was far from reassuring. They paused on the old trail and waited for any noise. Nothing moved. They heard no birds, felt no wind, and there was no longer the constant sound of the river they had just crossed. Overhead, the sky was dull grey—not indicating a storm, but instead a thin blanket laid over the sunshine.Serakha pulled her pack in and clutched it harder. “That did not sound like the mountain,” she said quietly. “That came from below.”He forced his hand into the earth and rested a moment on the cold ground. His eyes closed silently for just a moment. He said the ground sheltered some sort of activity. “Not close… but it’s moving.”Lucian looked ahead. The way ahead separated into three, much as Renak’s map had shown would occur. Three paths were dividing the road, with each heading off toward a different part of the forest. Only the path

There was no longer any cold on the route leading down from the mountain.A light breeze took the place of the cold wind, caresingly passing over Serakha’s cloak. It did not appear that the trees were sleeping now. The trees stood tall, their branches curling over them like sentinels, and their silver-green foliage softly hummed as light passed through.Lucian walked ahead, his flame, hidden beneath his skin, vibrating lightly as if pulsing.Leaving the city was not complete; memories of it continued with them. They carried that memory with them as they went: Because the route curved in the right place beneath them, warmth hung on their backs, and a gentle silence filled the morning. He brought up the rear, his normal quietness intact, yet his steps steadied the rest. He scanned the ground ahead, as though he expected something to happen. She stayed in the middle, her hand resting lightly on the seed kept inside her. It was not heavy. It was calm.
