Chapter 2

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
I couldn't get the word "no" out.

All I managed, under Jim's mocking stare, was a stiff, "Stay. Please. Charlie burned his hands cooking that."

Jim raised an eyebrow and sat down, visibly pleased with himself.

Thrilled, Charlie scrambled to pile several dishes into his father's bowl.

"This is the first time I made this," he said, a hint of pride in his voice. "Mom says it's really good. Try it, Dad."

Jim listened with half an ear, his attention locked on his phone. Just as he lifted a bite to his mouth, something on the screen made his brow crease. He set his fork down with a sharp crack, grabbed his suit jacket, and hurried out the door—without so much as a word goodbye.

The food Charlie had set on his plate sat there, untouched, going cold.

My son didn't say anything. He just hung his head. It wasn't until the tears started falling, one after another, that I finally pulled him into my arms.

I meant to tell him the same lie I always did—that his father was simply too busy. But he already knew, without me having to say it, whose ringtone that had been. Elizabeth Johnson's.

That night, after turning it over in my mind, I finally told my parents everything.

They asked me to confirm my decision, more than once, and then gave me their answer without hesitation: liquidate the assets, and wait for the right moment.

I already knew they'd heard about the mess Jim had made of things. They'd never brought it up, only because they didn't want to embarrass me—but they'd clearly been preparing for a while, just waiting for me to take the first step.

I was still deep in thought when a floorboard creaked somewhere in the dark. My heart skipped, and I spun around to find my son standing small in the doorway. I had no idea how much of what I'd just said he'd overheard.

But over the thunder of my own heartbeat, all he asked, perfectly calm, was what he should wear to the charity gala tomorrow.

I froze for a second, then bent down and pulled him close. "Your dad's coming to take us shopping for it tomorrow. Don't worry."

He nodded and went obediently back to his room. I watched him go and let out a long sigh.

After a night of tossing and turning, Jim showed up right on time to pick us up. Charlie, who'd already been waiting outside, lit up and pulled the car door open—only to have the smile freeze on his face a second later.

Sitting in the seat that had always been his was a boy his own age: Elizabeth Johnson's son, Milo Foster. And sitting in my seat was Elizabeth herself.

The breath caught in my throat. It felt like being slapped across the face.

"You're bringing them to the gala?"

Showing up somewhere that formal with the two of them in tow would be no different than smearing filth across my name in front of everyone.

Before Jim could answer, Elizabeth hurried to step in front of him.

"No, no, it's not like that! Autumn, please don't blame Jim. He just felt sorry for the two of us and offered to take us to pick out a few outfits, that's all."

Her posture was meek, her voice weak and pitiful—but the look she gave me was perfectly composed.

I wasn't in the mood to play nice with her, so I asked her straight out. "You know I'd blame him for this. So why did you still come along?"

Elizabeth stared at me, wide-eyed, looking as wronged as a woman with no way to defend herself, and tears started sliding down her face. Milo reached up with a tender little hand to wipe her cheek and burst into loud sobs right along with her.

Jim's voice cut in, cold. "That's enough, Autumn."

He looked at me, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Get in the Bentley."

He hadn't said much, but his choice had already been made clear. The staff standing around exchanged glances, and I felt something bitter and metallic rise in my throat. My vision swam dark for a moment—and then my son's small, cold hand found mine. He looked up at his father, his voice stubborn.

"Why do Mom and I have to ride in that car?"

Jim's brow furrowed. It was the first time our son had ever defied him.

Jim had seen exactly who Elizabeth really was by then. He shoved her off without a shred of courtesy and walked away without a backward glance. If Elizabeth actually tried to make good on that threat, the Pattison Group's legal team wouldn't exactly roll over either.I found it almost entertaining, listening to the two of them go at each other like dogs fighting over scraps. The very next day, though, Jim showed up at my door again. Just like every time we'd fought in the past, he had a bouquet in one hand and a gift in the other."Come home, Autumn."I shook my head calmly. "Let's just get divorced. Charlie stays with me. Take a look at the asset division and let me know if anything needs adjusting. We can talk it through."He studied my face intently. "Why? Nothing happened between me and Elizabeth. If you're going to convict me of something, shouldn't there be actual evidence?"I laughed, spacing my words out one at a time."Evidence? A month without setting foot in the house

Jim's chest heaved. "You didn't hear me calling you? Why did you run?""Oh," I said. "I didn't."Jim choked on that, dragging a hand through his hair in frustration. "Why do you want a divorce?""Because I want one."He choked again. Behind us, the kids were still buzzing with excited chatter. Remembering the absurd conversation that had just happened, Jim looked at Charlie with a flicker of guilt."Kids like to joke around. Don't believe him, Charlie. Why would I ever bring Milo home? You don't actually think I'd lie to you, do you?"Charlie's face stayed calm, but the small hand holding mine was slick with sweat. He shifted his gaze from the road in the distance to his father's face and said, quietly, "It's fine. I've heard it plenty of times already. I'm used to it."Jim's expression went blank, like something inside him had cracked open. He grabbed Charlie by the shoulders, panicked. "Plenty of times? Who said that? Why didn't you tell me?"Listening to him fire off questio

Jim had been turned away at the door, and it was clear enough to him why: Walter and Catherine Mars probably already resented him. This was worse than he'd expected. Still, he knew better than to push things, so he went home with a heavy heart and slept on it.First thing the next morning, he went to his own parents for help.Gerald Pattison looked taken aback. "What happened between you two?"Jim gave a vague answer, but Margaret Pattison zeroed right in on the truth. "Did Elizabeth get her hooks into you again?"Jim's head started to ache. "No," he said quickly. "I just... helped her out, that's all."Margaret didn't believe him for a second, but there was nothing to be done—when your own son needed backup, you gave it. So the three of them packed a generous gift and went to see the Mars family.Margaret had assumed that since this wasn't some unforgivable betrayal, a calm conversation would smooth things over. But after a few rounds of pleasantries, Walter and Catherine—poli

Once Jim had finished speaking, the hospital room went dead silent.Jim had been ruthless—willing to expose his own worst side just to draw a clean line between them. Elizabeth doubled over as if something had twisted inside her, pain contorting her face. Only days ago, she'd still been dreaming of becoming a rich man's wife. In the span of a few minutes, that dream had shattered completely. She pounded the bed in fury and broke down sobbing.Jim felt nothing. He couldn't understand why Elizabeth cried so easily. Over the past year alone, she'd cried more times than he could count—sometimes choked back, sometimes silent—and now, she was screeching like a woman possessed.Out of nowhere, he thought of Autumn. He tried to remember if his wife had ever cried in front of him. No matter how he searched his memory, the answer came back the same: never. Proud as Autumn Mars was, she never wept in front of him—except that one time, for their son.'Like a doll,' Jim thought quietly. If on

"Besides, our families were worlds apart. There was never any hope for us," Elizabeth said.Jim's tone stayed flat. "If you knew that, then why come looking for me now?"Elizabeth froze, then looked up at him, her face burning at the mockery he made no effort to hide. In that instant, she realized Jim didn't love her the way she'd assumed. Panic exploded in her chest.Grasping for anything, she blurted out, "Because I regret it. We loved each other so much back then. We shouldn't have let it slip away like that."Jim's brow furrowed, as if he genuinely couldn't recall. "How much did we love each other, exactly?""Because I loved fireworks, you set them off for me in Duggan Bay for two straight hours. You knew I loved fish, so you had someone deliver it to me every day for a month..."She listed it all off, pleased with herself, completely lost in the glow of old memories, not noticing the confusion on Jim's face. Because he genuinely didn't remember any of it. All he remembered

My head buzzed, and tears threatened to spill over. But I couldn't let them. The man of the house had already made his exit—the rest of us still had to fake our way through to the end of the party. Finally, after what felt like hours of forced smiles, the last guest left.I walked into the living room, exhausted, to find Charlie sitting on the floor unwrapping presents. He looked cheerful, as if the day's events hadn't touched him at all."Wow, a game console—the newest model," he said to himself, turning it over in his hands."Ryan told me today that I'm pathetic, because pretty soon I won't have a dad." He paused there, like he needed to catch his breath before he could find the courage to keep going. "But that's not true. I have Mom, and tons of toys, and a big house to live in. I'm not pathetic at all."His voice stayed even, his eyes fixed on the toy in his hands, even as the game kept chiming out its little death jingle over and over."I already have more than enough.
