Chapter 4

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
I studied Jim's tired face. "What are you going to do about this?"

Jim had just reached for a cigarette, but his hand stopped. He flicked his lighter on instead, staring into the flame. "Milo didn't mean it. Let's just drop it this time."

I laughed. "Drop it? How generous of you. Your own son doesn't even rank above someone else's."

The words were harsh on purpose—I was ready to tear this open completely. But Jim didn't react with the anger I'd expected. He just studied my face carefully, then said, out of nowhere, "You've lost weight lately."

I froze for a second. I had lost a little, though barely enough to notice. He kept watching my expression and went on bluntly. "There's nothing going on between me and Elizabeth and her son. Don't read into it. I just feel sorry for them, so I've been helping her with a lawsuit. Once it's settled, I'll cut back on seeing them."

I caught the key word in that sentence—not "never see them again," but "cut back." A full year of drifting away from us, and all he had to explain it with was one flimsy word: pity. His story had more holes than I could count, but the moment my gaze landed on our son's hospital bed, my mind went conveniently blank.

"Charlie's birthday is next Tuesday," I said quietly. "Make sure you're there."

Seeing that I wasn't going to push further, Jim relaxed. He reached out and touched my face. "Got it. Eat more these days—you're thin enough to bruise."

It was the same kind of teasing he used to toss my way all the time. But I felt no urge at all to banter back. As I turned to walk away, something in Jim's eyes dimmed.

We'd both been raised soft and spoiled. Who could keep coaxing someone like that forever?

Elizabeth could.

On the fourth day of Jim giving Elizabeth the cold shoulder, Milo forced his way into our house.

It was Charlie's birthday. I'd spent hours arranging every detail, and nearly everyone we knew had shown up. They all noticed the cut on my son's forehead, but true to form, no one said a word about it—the same way no one had mentioned Jim's absence on this exact day the year before. It was a humiliating little secret everyone happened to know.

This time, though, Jim played the part of a real father, holding our son's hand as they cut the cake together. Everything was perfect—until Milo burst in, screaming.

"Uncle Jim! Mom took her pills, and I can't wake her up! Please, please save her!"

Milo's voice was loud and pitiful, echoing again and again through the open yard.

Jim let go of Charlie's hand instantly and strode over, his face grim. My heart hammered in my chest, and I ran to block his path.

"Send your assistant. Please. It's Charlie's birthday."

For the first time in my life, I begged him, lowering myself to plead with him to just look back—to look at our son's face.

Jim pushed my hand away without hesitation. "A life is at stake. Charlie's a good kid. He'll understand."

He pushed through the crowd of curious guests and disappeared from sight.

A chill crept up from the soles of my feet. I turned my stiff neck, inch by inch, to look at my son.

Charlie stood there among the guests, staring blankly at the direction his father had gone, the cake knife still frozen in his hand exactly where it had been.

Beside him, with a child's blunt honesty, one of his classmates piped up. "Charlie, why did your dad just leave with Milo? Is he Milo's dad too?"

The moment the words left his mouth, the boy's parent clapped a hand over his mouth.

But my son showed no anger at all. He looked over calmly, the corner of his mouth curling into a faint smile.

"Maybe," he said.

Jim had seen exactly who Elizabeth really was by then. He shoved her off without a shred of courtesy and walked away without a backward glance. If Elizabeth actually tried to make good on that threat, the Pattison Group's legal team wouldn't exactly roll over either.I found it almost entertaining, listening to the two of them go at each other like dogs fighting over scraps. The very next day, though, Jim showed up at my door again. Just like every time we'd fought in the past, he had a bouquet in one hand and a gift in the other."Come home, Autumn."I shook my head calmly. "Let's just get divorced. Charlie stays with me. Take a look at the asset division and let me know if anything needs adjusting. We can talk it through."He studied my face intently. "Why? Nothing happened between me and Elizabeth. If you're going to convict me of something, shouldn't there be actual evidence?"I laughed, spacing my words out one at a time."Evidence? A month without setting foot in the house

Jim's chest heaved. "You didn't hear me calling you? Why did you run?""Oh," I said. "I didn't."Jim choked on that, dragging a hand through his hair in frustration. "Why do you want a divorce?""Because I want one."He choked again. Behind us, the kids were still buzzing with excited chatter. Remembering the absurd conversation that had just happened, Jim looked at Charlie with a flicker of guilt."Kids like to joke around. Don't believe him, Charlie. Why would I ever bring Milo home? You don't actually think I'd lie to you, do you?"Charlie's face stayed calm, but the small hand holding mine was slick with sweat. He shifted his gaze from the road in the distance to his father's face and said, quietly, "It's fine. I've heard it plenty of times already. I'm used to it."Jim's expression went blank, like something inside him had cracked open. He grabbed Charlie by the shoulders, panicked. "Plenty of times? Who said that? Why didn't you tell me?"Listening to him fire off questio

Jim had been turned away at the door, and it was clear enough to him why: Walter and Catherine Mars probably already resented him. This was worse than he'd expected. Still, he knew better than to push things, so he went home with a heavy heart and slept on it.First thing the next morning, he went to his own parents for help.Gerald Pattison looked taken aback. "What happened between you two?"Jim gave a vague answer, but Margaret Pattison zeroed right in on the truth. "Did Elizabeth get her hooks into you again?"Jim's head started to ache. "No," he said quickly. "I just... helped her out, that's all."Margaret didn't believe him for a second, but there was nothing to be done—when your own son needed backup, you gave it. So the three of them packed a generous gift and went to see the Mars family.Margaret had assumed that since this wasn't some unforgivable betrayal, a calm conversation would smooth things over. But after a few rounds of pleasantries, Walter and Catherine—poli

Once Jim had finished speaking, the hospital room went dead silent.Jim had been ruthless—willing to expose his own worst side just to draw a clean line between them. Elizabeth doubled over as if something had twisted inside her, pain contorting her face. Only days ago, she'd still been dreaming of becoming a rich man's wife. In the span of a few minutes, that dream had shattered completely. She pounded the bed in fury and broke down sobbing.Jim felt nothing. He couldn't understand why Elizabeth cried so easily. Over the past year alone, she'd cried more times than he could count—sometimes choked back, sometimes silent—and now, she was screeching like a woman possessed.Out of nowhere, he thought of Autumn. He tried to remember if his wife had ever cried in front of him. No matter how he searched his memory, the answer came back the same: never. Proud as Autumn Mars was, she never wept in front of him—except that one time, for their son.'Like a doll,' Jim thought quietly. If on

"Besides, our families were worlds apart. There was never any hope for us," Elizabeth said.Jim's tone stayed flat. "If you knew that, then why come looking for me now?"Elizabeth froze, then looked up at him, her face burning at the mockery he made no effort to hide. In that instant, she realized Jim didn't love her the way she'd assumed. Panic exploded in her chest.Grasping for anything, she blurted out, "Because I regret it. We loved each other so much back then. We shouldn't have let it slip away like that."Jim's brow furrowed, as if he genuinely couldn't recall. "How much did we love each other, exactly?""Because I loved fireworks, you set them off for me in Duggan Bay for two straight hours. You knew I loved fish, so you had someone deliver it to me every day for a month..."She listed it all off, pleased with herself, completely lost in the glow of old memories, not noticing the confusion on Jim's face. Because he genuinely didn't remember any of it. All he remembered

My head buzzed, and tears threatened to spill over. But I couldn't let them. The man of the house had already made his exit—the rest of us still had to fake our way through to the end of the party. Finally, after what felt like hours of forced smiles, the last guest left.I walked into the living room, exhausted, to find Charlie sitting on the floor unwrapping presents. He looked cheerful, as if the day's events hadn't touched him at all."Wow, a game console—the newest model," he said to himself, turning it over in his hands."Ryan told me today that I'm pathetic, because pretty soon I won't have a dad." He paused there, like he needed to catch his breath before he could find the courage to keep going. "But that's not true. I have Mom, and tons of toys, and a big house to live in. I'm not pathetic at all."His voice stayed even, his eyes fixed on the toy in his hands, even as the game kept chiming out its little death jingle over and over."I already have more than enough. I sho
