Chapter 2

Author: Orange Cat
The ventilator hissed and puffed continuously. Its sound echoed in my ears. It was so clear and so unbearably loud.

I pulled with all my strength and unplugged it.

The world finally became completely silent.

Mom, Dad, now you can have some peace and quiet.

When I opened my eyes again, I was floating in the air. My body felt weightless, and my chest no longer felt tight. That familiar feeling of suffocation had completely disappeared.

Curiously, I looked at my hands. They were translucent.

I floated over to Dad. He was sitting on the couch, smoking one cigarette after another. Through the swirling smoke, I couldn't see his expression clearly.

I remembered that Dad didn't smoke. He always said cigarette smoke was bad for my lungs.

When had he started?

I racked my brain and recalled it was about the time after the doctor issued the third critical condition notice. He had hidden it from me as he cried like a child in the hospital stairwell.

I couldn't help but sigh at the sight of Dad's hair that had turned even whiter.

Because of my illness, he worked at the factory during the day and drove for a rideshare service at night. On top of those jobs, he delivered food on weekends.

He always said, "You are Daddy's precious little baby, Addie. I don't mind a little hardship."

Dad, I'm sorry. I'm not your baby—I'm your burden.

I reached out, wanting to smooth the deep frown between his brows. But my fingers passed right through him.

Like an adult, I let out a long sigh and thought, "Forget it. Dad's already so tired. I shouldn't trouble him anymore."

I wondered how Mom and Jasper were doing at Granny's house. Was Jasper refusing to drink milk again?

As those thoughts drifted through my mind, my consciousness gradually became blurry.

Maybe I should sleep. Mom always said that after a good sleep, I'd feel better.

"Good night, Dad."

As for Mom and Jasper, they probably didn't want to hear me say good night.

The next time I woke up, it was because of the sound of the door opening. Mom and Dad were back.

Excitedly, I floated over to them, wanting to give them a big hug.

"Dad, Mom, look! I can fly now! My body doesn't hurt at all anymore. Can you take me out to play from now on?"

I blinked and showed them the adorable expression that they could never resist. However, they walked straight through me as if they couldn't see me at all.

Mom carefully placed Jasper back into his crib. A tired but gentle smile rested on her face.

She cooed, "Were you a good boy today, Jas? Did you miss Mommy?"

Aunt Emma followed behind her, carrying a bucket of fried chicken. "Keira, I brought a late-night snack for you and Wesley. Eat it while it's hot."

The aroma of fried chicken instantly filled the living room.

Was she referring to that golden, delicious-smelling thing?

I yearned to eat it so much that I almost started drooling. I'd only ever seen it on TV.

How naughty of Mom to eat something so delicious behind my back!

Mom accepted the fried chicken but didn't eat it. She simply set it aside.

She said, "You really shouldn't have. If Addie smells it, he'll start making a fuss again."

Aunt Emma scowled slightly. Her voice wasn't loud, but it was just loud enough for me to hear.

She responded, "He's a patient who can only drink liquids anyway. What's wrong with letting him smell it? You're too considerate of him. Keira, I know this sounds harsh, but Addie is a bottomless pit. You can't sacrifice Jas because of him.

"Look at Jas. He's healthy and adorable. That's what a normal child is supposed to be like."

Understanding what Aunt Emma meant, I felt tears threatening to spill from my eyes.

How could Mom let someone talk about me like that? She had once said that having just one son was enough for her in this lifetime.

Before Jasper was born, she and Dad had held my hands and promised me that even after I had a little brother, I would still be the most important person in their hearts.

And now?

It hadn't even been that long, and the adults had already changed their minds.

Bad Mom! Bad Aunt Emma!

I swore it would take at least three chicken drumsticks to make me forgive them!

So, I held up three fingers and waved them in front of Mom. Yet, she didn't even look at me.

Dad sighed and reached right through my hand to pick up the bucket of fried chicken.

He sighed tiredly and said, "Enough. Stop criticizing Addie. He doesn't feel good about this either."

He walked over to my bedroom door and knocked on it.

Tears shimmered in Mom's eyes as she gently stroked Jasper's head. She comforted him gently, saying, "Jas, Addie would be very happy to know you miss him this much. It's just that he went to a place very, very far away. He became a star in the sky, and he'll always be with you. Whenever you miss him, look up at the sky. The brightest star is him."Jasper nodded as if he kind of understood what she said.Later, Mom and Dad really did take my ash pendants, along with Jasper, to many places. The first stop was the beach I had always dreamed of visiting. They rented beach chairs, bought coconut juice, and built a huge sandcastle beneath the setting sun. Whenever they took pictures, they always left an empty spot for me or held up the pendants hanging over their hearts.Whenever curious tourists asked about it, Jasper would proudly answer at the top of his lungs. "That's for my brother, Addie! He loves me the most! He's watching me from the sky!"Then, they went to eat a family bucke

After Dad regained consciousness, he completely fell apart. He could not accept that I was dead."It's all my fault. If only I'd been a little more careful..."He kept hitting himself while sinking deeper and deeper into guilt and regret.Mom picked up the cross-stitch that had fallen onto the floor and held it out to him.She said, "Look, dear. This is what Adrian left for Jas. He told us to live well. He wanted us to stay by Jas's side and watch him grow up. He'll be watching us from heaven."Dad's trembling hand reached out and traced the crooked "Quiet". At last, he broke down into inconsolable sobs. He cried like a child, as if he were finally releasing all the pain and pressure he had carried for so many years.Mom and Dad held a small funeral for me. For my memorial photo, they chose the one from my seventh birthday, where I was smiling the brightest. It was in color.Very few people came to pay their respects. Most of our relatives were only there to watch the spectacl

"No!"Dad and Desmond shouted at the same time and rushed forward immediately, but they only managed to lessen the impact slightly.Mom's forehead still slammed hard into the corner of the chest. A gash instantly split open. Bright red blood ran down her face and dripped onto my body.I was terrified. I immediately threw myself into Mom's arms and shook her over and over."Mom! No! Don't hurt yourself!" I shouted.I thought my hand would just go through her like before. But to my surprise, Mom slowly raised her arms and pulled my translucent body into her embrace. "Addie… Is that you?"I nodded vigorously as tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. I felt incredibly sad. Now that I could touch Mom, did that mean she was about to go to that cold, lonely place with me?No, I couldn't let that happen!"Addie, I didn't mean it. I was just tired. I just wanted to rest for a little while. How could you leave me behind like this?" Mom sobbed. My eyes reddened as I shook my head

With just one glance, Mom and Dad looked as though every bit of strength had been drained from their bodies. They staggered backward."No... This isn't real..." Mom shook her head frantically, her face turning completely pale. "My dear boy… My Addie… How could he be lying in there?"Dad's legs were trembling too, but he still forced himself to stay upright. He tried to support Mom as she swayed on her feet.In the end, neither of them could hold on any longer. Both of them crumpled to the floor.Jasper didn't understand what was happening. He was still too young to understand what death meant. Curiously, he toddled over to the wooden chest and peeked inside. Then, his eyes lit up.He squealed in surprise and clapped his little hands excitedly as he pointed inside over and over, making mushed, incomprehensible sounds that sounded like "Addie". He reached out and tried to grab my hand. But all he touched were my cold, stiff fingertips.Anxiously, he patted my arm and babbled insist

Mom and Dad turned the entire house upside down. They searched the closets, under the beds, and even opened the washing machine to look inside.Yet, they still couldn't find me."Where did Addie go?"Mom and Dad panicked. They rushed out of the apartment and knocked on every neighbor's door in the building."Hello, have you seen Addie? He's seven years old, very pale, and he should have a breathing tube attached to him..."Everyone shook their heads.Back at home, I floated around anxiously.I said, "Dad, Mom, I'm already asleep. Stop looking for me. The angels will be here soon to take me away."Didn't they say that I wouldn't feel any pain anymore in heaven? I could also eat all the fried chicken I wanted there. The only thing I wasn't sure about was whether there was cross-stitch embroidery in heaven.I still wanted to make Mom an even bigger "Happy Family" embroidery.Oops! I kind of got distracted.I felt sorry for Jasper, who was still crying nonstop. He kept babbling

"Jas, stop fooling around!" Mom's face instantly turned pale as she scolded him sharply, thinking he was throwing another tantrum. She added, "I just praised you for being well-behaved. Why are you crying nonstop the moment we get home? If you keep crying, I'll send you away and never come get you again!"Aunt Emma chimed in from the side, "Exactly. He's just a child, yet he's making such a fuss. He must've learned it from that good-for-nothing brother of his, who acts weird and gloomy all day long."I floated in the air, staring at their angry faces. I desperately wanted to explain, but I couldn't get a single word out.I said, "Mom, don't be angry. Jasper isn't fooling around. He's just... He's just scared."Dad seemed to realize something all at once. He suddenly shot to his feet, his face turning deathly white. It wasn't because of Jasper's crying, but because of the suffocating silence in our surroundings."Keira…" Dad's voice trembled as he looked around. "Don't you think t
