Chapter 4

Penulis: Orange Cat
But just as he reached out his hand, Aunt Emma called out to him. "Wesley, hurry up! Our appointment at the photography studio is almost here!"

I watched helplessly as Dad's hand paused in the air for a moment.

In the end, he turned and left.

He was so close! Just one second, and he would have discovered that I wasn't in bed.

I sighed and happily followed after them, wanting to see the outside world. From the day I was born until now, I had barely ever left the house aside from going to the hospital. So, I was full of curiosity about the outside world.

Unfortunately, an invisible barrier stopped me from leaving the house. I couldn't get out.

Oh, well. There were so many cars and people outside. They might knock my soul apart into tiny little pieces.

Pouting helplessly, I floated around the house.

My little music box sat beside my bed. Jas loved it. Every time he saw it, he would reach out for it. I decided I'd give it to him when he came back.

Mom's birthday was coming up soon. Hidden beneath my mattress were a few tiny diamonds I had pried off one of Mom's broken hair clips. I had wanted to make a necklace for her with them. I wondered if she'd like it.

Sighing and shaking my head, I sat on my little wooden horse. Dad had made it for me himself. Now, what should I give Dad as a gift?

My eyes landed on Mom's unfinished cross-stitch embroidery sitting on the table.

Suddenly, an idea struck me.

"I've got it!" I exclaimed excitedly.

I focused as hard as I could and tried to pick up the needle.

Once… Twice…

It worked! It was slow, but I could move it.

Like I was completing some grand project, I crookedly embroidered one extra word beside the "Happy Family" stitch by stitch, thread by thread.

"Quiet."

I floated back a few steps and examined my work carefully. Then, I nodded in satisfaction.

I thought it was not bad. Mom would definitely be happy when she saw it. Then she wouldn't regret giving birth to me anymore, right?

Humming an off-key tune, I floated over to Dad's desk. There was dust on it. I blew and blew to clear it away.

There were cookie crumbs on the floor that Jasper had dropped. Again, I blew and blew.

Finally, I admired my handiwork with satisfaction. How capable I was!

Then, I waited. The sky outside changed from light to dark, and then from dark to light.

Mom and Dad still hadn't returned. Had they abandoned me?

Well, that was okay. I was a burden anyway.

Just as my head started drooping and I was about to fall asleep, the front door finally opened.

Jasper was wearing beautiful new clothes. Dad carried him in his arms. He held a colorful pinwheel while giggling happily.

I didn't care about the colorful pinwheel. I immediately floated around Mom.

I said, "Mom, go look at the cross-stitch! I prepared a surprise for you."

The first thing Mom always did after coming home was collect the laundry from the balcony. To get to the balcony, she had to pass through the living room. She would definitely see my surprise.

"You're amazing, Addie!" I proudly complimented myself.

But all I could do was watch as Mom and Aunt Emma sat on the couch to admire the newly taken photographs.

Aunt Emma commented, "Keira, look at this one of Jas. His smile is so sweet! It's much better than a certain gloomy little downer."

As she spoke, she deliberately glanced toward my photo wall.

Dad wanted to go check on me in the bedroom, but Mom called him back. "Wesley, come look at this. This family portrait turned out so well."

He felt helpless. Knowing that Mom was still angry with me, he walked over and sat down.

My face devoid of any expression, I floated behind them and looked at the family portrait. In the photo, Dad, Mom, Aunt Emma, and Jasper were all smiling brightly.

But I wasn't there. How could it be a family portrait without me?

"When I'm gone, Jas, it'll be your job to cheer Mom and Dad up," I said earnestly while patting Jasper's shoulder.

Now, I finally understood.

I must have died. I just didn't know why I hadn't gone to heaven and was trapped inside this house instead.

Suddenly, Jasper looked up. His big, round eyes stared directly at me.

Could he see me?

I made a silly face at him. He immediately giggled. Then, he pointed at me and turned to look at Mom.

"Look how well-behaved Jas is. He's unlike his brother. Just because of one thing I said, he's been sulking this whole time," Mom said.

Her voice dripped with sarcasm as she added, "He knows we're back, and he's still hiding in his room. Is he waiting for me to beg him to come out? He's not nearly as sensible as Jas, is he?"

Jasper shook his head in confusion. Then, he stretched out his tiny finger and pointed in my direction again.

Mom, Dad, and Aunt Emma all directed their gazes to where he was pointing. Alas, they saw nothing.

"Young children have clear eyes. Sometimes, they can see things they shouldn't. Don't point around randomly," Aunt Emma said superstitiously.

Mom's expression changed slightly, but she still spoke gently to Jasper. "Be good, Jas. Your brother is sleeping in his room. Let's not disturb him."

Tilting his head, Jasper sucked on his finger. His big eyes slowly scanned the room. Finally, his gaze landed on the bed in my room. He looked at the ventilator that had already stopped working.

Suddenly, he let out a loud cry. Stretching out his little hand, he pointed toward where I was standing.

Tears shimmered in Mom's eyes as she gently stroked Jasper's head. She comforted him gently, saying, "Jas, Addie would be very happy to know you miss him this much. It's just that he went to a place very, very far away. He became a star in the sky, and he'll always be with you. Whenever you miss him, look up at the sky. The brightest star is him."Jasper nodded as if he kind of understood what she said.Later, Mom and Dad really did take my ash pendants, along with Jasper, to many places. The first stop was the beach I had always dreamed of visiting. They rented beach chairs, bought coconut juice, and built a huge sandcastle beneath the setting sun. Whenever they took pictures, they always left an empty spot for me or held up the pendants hanging over their hearts.Whenever curious tourists asked about it, Jasper would proudly answer at the top of his lungs. "That's for my brother, Addie! He loves me the most! He's watching me from the sky!"Then, they went to eat a family bucke

After Dad regained consciousness, he completely fell apart. He could not accept that I was dead."It's all my fault. If only I'd been a little more careful..."He kept hitting himself while sinking deeper and deeper into guilt and regret.Mom picked up the cross-stitch that had fallen onto the floor and held it out to him.She said, "Look, dear. This is what Adrian left for Jas. He told us to live well. He wanted us to stay by Jas's side and watch him grow up. He'll be watching us from heaven."Dad's trembling hand reached out and traced the crooked "Quiet". At last, he broke down into inconsolable sobs. He cried like a child, as if he were finally releasing all the pain and pressure he had carried for so many years.Mom and Dad held a small funeral for me. For my memorial photo, they chose the one from my seventh birthday, where I was smiling the brightest. It was in color.Very few people came to pay their respects. Most of our relatives were only there to watch the spectacl

"No!"Dad and Desmond shouted at the same time and rushed forward immediately, but they only managed to lessen the impact slightly.Mom's forehead still slammed hard into the corner of the chest. A gash instantly split open. Bright red blood ran down her face and dripped onto my body.I was terrified. I immediately threw myself into Mom's arms and shook her over and over."Mom! No! Don't hurt yourself!" I shouted.I thought my hand would just go through her like before. But to my surprise, Mom slowly raised her arms and pulled my translucent body into her embrace. "Addie… Is that you?"I nodded vigorously as tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. I felt incredibly sad. Now that I could touch Mom, did that mean she was about to go to that cold, lonely place with me?No, I couldn't let that happen!"Addie, I didn't mean it. I was just tired. I just wanted to rest for a little while. How could you leave me behind like this?" Mom sobbed. My eyes reddened as I shook my head

With just one glance, Mom and Dad looked as though every bit of strength had been drained from their bodies. They staggered backward."No... This isn't real..." Mom shook her head frantically, her face turning completely pale. "My dear boy… My Addie… How could he be lying in there?"Dad's legs were trembling too, but he still forced himself to stay upright. He tried to support Mom as she swayed on her feet.In the end, neither of them could hold on any longer. Both of them crumpled to the floor.Jasper didn't understand what was happening. He was still too young to understand what death meant. Curiously, he toddled over to the wooden chest and peeked inside. Then, his eyes lit up.He squealed in surprise and clapped his little hands excitedly as he pointed inside over and over, making mushed, incomprehensible sounds that sounded like "Addie". He reached out and tried to grab my hand. But all he touched were my cold, stiff fingertips.Anxiously, he patted my arm and babbled insist

Mom and Dad turned the entire house upside down. They searched the closets, under the beds, and even opened the washing machine to look inside.Yet, they still couldn't find me."Where did Addie go?"Mom and Dad panicked. They rushed out of the apartment and knocked on every neighbor's door in the building."Hello, have you seen Addie? He's seven years old, very pale, and he should have a breathing tube attached to him..."Everyone shook their heads.Back at home, I floated around anxiously.I said, "Dad, Mom, I'm already asleep. Stop looking for me. The angels will be here soon to take me away."Didn't they say that I wouldn't feel any pain anymore in heaven? I could also eat all the fried chicken I wanted there. The only thing I wasn't sure about was whether there was cross-stitch embroidery in heaven.I still wanted to make Mom an even bigger "Happy Family" embroidery.Oops! I kind of got distracted.I felt sorry for Jasper, who was still crying nonstop. He kept babbling

"Jas, stop fooling around!" Mom's face instantly turned pale as she scolded him sharply, thinking he was throwing another tantrum. She added, "I just praised you for being well-behaved. Why are you crying nonstop the moment we get home? If you keep crying, I'll send you away and never come get you again!"Aunt Emma chimed in from the side, "Exactly. He's just a child, yet he's making such a fuss. He must've learned it from that good-for-nothing brother of his, who acts weird and gloomy all day long."I floated in the air, staring at their angry faces. I desperately wanted to explain, but I couldn't get a single word out.I said, "Mom, don't be angry. Jasper isn't fooling around. He's just... He's just scared."Dad seemed to realize something all at once. He suddenly shot to his feet, his face turning deathly white. It wasn't because of Jasper's crying, but because of the suffocating silence in our surroundings."Keira…" Dad's voice trembled as he looked around. "Don't you think t
