Chapter 2

Author: Chelsea
The Donatelli's family seal was pressed onto the black cardstock, and my name and Raffaello's were printed side by side in the very center.

I had personally checked the guest list. In it were my friends from college and also the subordinates who had grown close to me over the years. The numbers were small, only enough for two tables.

I was just putting the invitations into envelopes when Camilla walked in. She picked one up and looked at it.

"It's really beautiful. Can I have some?"

My gaze traveled over her face. "Who are you going to invite?"

"Friends from the foundation."

Camilla ran a children's charity foundation in the city, and the Donatelli family made a large donation on her behalf every year.

"They've always wanted to meet Raffaello," she said, putting the invitation back on the table. "But it's okay. I was just asking."

Half an hour later, Raffaello entered the study.

"Cut one of the two tables for your friends," he said, placing a new guest list in front of me. "Camilla wants to invite a few of her friends."

I looked at the list, finding it amusing. "But this is our wedding."

"I know." Raffaello leaned against the desk. "It's just a few more people. Besides, you can see your friends anytime."

I turned to the second page and found that the program had also been changed.

Originally, Raffaello and I were supposed to give a speech before the dinner began. But now that had been crossed out and replaced with a 15-minute presentation by Camilla on her foundation.

I looked up at Raffaello. "Was it you who changed this too?"

"Yeah," he replied without hesitation. "The press will be there too. I've already had someone prepare the projector and the donation segment."

Camilla was standing outside the door and happened to overhear our conversation. She immediately walked in and said, "Raffaello, I just wanted the foundation to get a bit more exposure. Why did you go and change the whole wedding program?"

She then turned to me. "Dafne, please don't get this the wrong way. I swear I'm not trying to steal your thunder."

I looked at her, unusually calm. "Okay."

Camilla was taken aback for a moment, and Raffaello also looked at me with a conflicted expression for a few seconds.

Maybe because I'd agreed too quickly, Raffaello reached out and stroked my cheek instead.

"After the wedding, I'll take you to Southern Mereworth for our honeymoon. It'll be just the two of us then."

I didn't remind him that I had already canceled those two plane tickets last night.

In the afternoon, I went to inspect the wedding motorcade.

Marco handed me the route map.

The lead car, Car A, had already been reassigned to Camilla's name. Meanwhile, I was placed in Car B, with a different route.

Car A would take one of the main roads under the Donatelli family's tightest control. To avoid traffic, my car would have to detour through the old port district.

"Signora Dafne, if you're not okay with this, I can go talk to Don Donatelli," Marco said, looking a little embarrassed.

"No, it's fine." I closed the route map. "Just do as he says."

Marco gave me a look and didn't ask anything further.

When I got back to the estate, Camilla was trying on the dress she would wear on the day of the wedding. It was a silver gown paired with pearl earrings.

She gave a little spin in front of the mirror and asked, "How do I look?"

Mamma praised her profusely.

Raffaello was sitting on the couch taking a phone call. He glanced up, then said, "You need to take it in a bit more at the waist."

Camilla laughed. "Since when do you know anything about women's gowns?"

"I've been to a few of Dafne's fittings." Only after saying that did he remember me.

"Is your gown ready yet?" he asked me.

Before I could answer, Mamma frowned and said, "She's the bride—would she be short of gowns? Camilla, on the other hand, rarely gets to attend such a big occasion, so of course she needs to be properly prepared."

The seamstress crouched down to adjust Camilla's hem.

I stood watching from the doorway for a while. No one asked about my wedding gown again, nor did anyone know that this morning I had already told the bridal shop to stop the alterations.

After all, I wouldn't be wearing the wedding gown in five days.

That night, I went back to my room and packed my passport, cash, and a few documents into a duffel bag.

My phone buzzed with a message from Diego.

"Come to San Giorgio's Pier in the north at 11:00 am five days from now. That place isn't under the Donatelli family's control."

After I sent my reply, I heard Camilla laughing out in the hallway.

Raffaello was teaching her how to use the private elevator on the wedding day.

I zipped up my duffel bag.

There were still five days to go.

Valeley had already fallen into chaos.First, the Donatelli family lost a long-term shipowner; then, a rival family intercepted a shipment at the East Port. Later, two senior family members took advantage of Raffaello's absence to demand a redistribution of control over the docks.Marco called Raffaello more than a dozen times a day, urging him to return, but he still remained in Mazzino. Finally, the family council issued an ultimatum."Don Donatelli, if you don't come back, the East Port may no longer be ours," Marco reported.Raffaello sat in the car, watching my office from a distance. That afternoon, Teodoro stopped by to deliver a contract. As he was leaving, he took a key out of his pocket."The office upstairs is empty, and the one you have now is too small."I took the key and tossed it in my hand twice. "Are you giving it to me for free?""Dream on. We'll go by market price."I burst out laughing. "I don't want it then."He reached out to take the key back, but I i

Camilla walked in with little color in her face and sneered, "You must be very pleased with yourself.""Get out," I said without looking up, continuing to sign the documents.Camilla didn't move from where she was standing."Raffaello froze my foundation's account and took back all the bodyguards, the driver, and the estate. Papa and Mamma even got into a fight with him over looking for you."She gritted her teeth. "But don't think you've won. The only reason Raffaello is looking for you is that he can't accept you leaving, and not because he loves you."I let out a laugh. "Isn't that even better?"Camilla was stunned. "What do you mean?""You want him, whereas I don't. No one's fighting you for him now."Camilla's expression darkened by the second. "Dafne, you can drop the act! You had everything since you were young, while I was the one with poor health. So, what's wrong with Papa and Mamma loving me a little more?"She swept the documents off the desk, and the vase shattere

The moment Raffaello burst into the office, the whole place went quiet.I was checking the reports. When I looked up and saw him, I barely reacted."What are you doing here?" I asked. His expression instantly changed. It was as if, after he'd traveled all this way to find me, I should've at least been shocked, or cried, or asked him why he'd taken so long to come. Yet, I did none of those things. He quickly walked up to me."Come back with me," he ordered.I put down my pen. "Why should I?""I'll hold another wedding." He pulled a velvet box from his pocket. I got the brooch back too."When I looked at the emerald brooch, all I felt was how unfamiliar it seemed."And then what?"Raffaello froze. "And then we get married. This time there won't be any Camilla."I burst out laughing. "Raffaello, do you really think I ran off because of the wedding?"His Adam's apple bobbed. "I know it was more than that."I suddenly cut him off, and he froze."Do you know that when I was 13

Teodoro tossed a contract onto my desk without making an appointment."That batch of goods yesterday was mine."I looked up at him. "And so?""I was originally planning to switch carriers." He sat down across from me, leaning back lazily. "But now I'm not going to do that."I flipped open the contract. The amount was 15 percent higher than the old one."What are the conditions?""Next quarter, the three North Carica routes go to you as well."I frowned. "But those routes are very risky.""I know.""Why are you still giving them to me then?"Teodoro looked at me. "Because yesterday you solved in two hours a problem that others couldn't solve in two days." He stood up and raised his index finger. "You've got one month to prove you deserve this contract.""Fine," I said, not bothering with pleasantries. That same day, I overhauled three shipping routes by making sweeping changes to countless details.Half a month later, the first batch of goods arrived at the port without a h

Mamma's first words were, "I'm sure Dafne is just throwing a tantrum. Where can she run off to anyway? The whole family is here today—how are we supposed to face everyone?"Raffaello suddenly looked up, his gaze falling on Camilla's chest. The emerald brooch was still there."Take it off," he ordered.Camilla froze. "What?""I said take it off!"Her eyes immediately turned red. "But you personally—"Raffaello ripped off the brooch. The sharp pin tore through the dress, and Camilla gasped in pain.Just then, Marco hurried back in."Don Donatelli, someone at San Giorgio's Pier found out that Signora Dafne contacted Diego a week ago."A week ago? Raffaello was completely struck dumb.It turned out I had already been planning to leave since then.Marco paused, then added, "There's one more thing. When we contacted Dr. Livingston to confirm the trip, he said he'll be coming to Battenland again next month."All the color drained out of Camilla's face in an instant.Raffaello slo

Raffaello entered the ballroom with Camilla, and the family members rose one after another."Where's Dafne?" he asked as he handed his gloves to Marco. The wedding coordinator, Caterina Bellini, turned pale."Don Donatelli, Signora Dafne didn't come to the hotel today."Raffaello's expression darkened. "Then go to the estate to pick her up. What is she throwing a fit about this time?"Caterina swallowed before answering, "Signora Dafne isn't at the estate either."Just then, Marco hurried in from the doorway with a black velvet box in his hand."Don Donatelli."Raffaello took it and opened it. Inside lay my engagement ring. His grip abruptly tightened."Where did you get this?" he asked."A household staff member said a dock worker delivered it to the estate."Raffaello's head snapped up. "The docks? Which dock?"Marco's expression changed. "He said he didn't know."Raffaello turned immediately and strode to the door."Lock down the airports, train stations, highways, and
