Chapter 1

The wedding dinner would take place here in a week.

The head chef, Sergio Marini, was waiting in the restaurant with the menu.

I had just sat down when my sister, Camilla Bellandi, clutched her chest and coughed twice.

My Mamma, Anna Greco, immediately became anxious.

"Is it too stuffy in here?" she asked.

"I'm fine," Camilla replied with a smile. "It's just that Dr. Pietro Santoro won't let me have any alcohol lately, and I can't eat anything too salty either."

Sergio turned to me. "Signora Dafne, the menu you previously decided on includes red wine braised beef, salt-baked sea bass, and lemon liqueur after the meal. Would you like to make any adjustments?"

Before I could speak, my fiance, Raffaello Donatelli, had already snapped the menu shut.

"Cancel all of it." He ignored my puzzled gaze and continued giving instructions. "Swap the wine for non-alcoholic sparkling wine, use less salt on the main course, and skip the rum in the dessert too."

"But these were all personally chosen by Signora Dafne," Sergio said with hesitation.

Only then did Raffaello look at me. "You can eat whatever you want, but Camilla can't. Her health won't allow it."

Camilla immediately waved her hand. "Don't bother, Raffaello. This is Dafne's wedding, after all. I'll just eat less."

The more she went on like that, the more it broke Mamma's heart.

"Nonsense. It's just a wedding—how can it compare to your health?" Mamma turned to look at me. "Dafne, it's just a meal. Can it really be more important than Camilla's health?"

My Papa, Fabio Bellandi, also frowned.

"The guests aren't coming to the wedding just to eat."

I glanced at the menu lying beside my hand.

Three months ago, Raffaello and I came here for the first tasting. He had rarely set aside an entire evening of family business.

My favorite dish was the red wine braised beef, so he personally marked a star next to it on the menu to remind Sergio to pay special attention to this dish.

But in the same vein, it only took one word from Camilla for him to swap out every dish I had carefully chosen.

"Let's just go with what Raffaello said," I replied, calmly sliding the menu back.

Raffaello glanced at me, and his expression softened.

"That's more like it." He raised his hand to ruffle my hair. "The wedding's just one day. After that, I'll take you to eat whatever you want."

I turned my head away to avoid his touch, and his hand froze mid-air.

Suddenly, Camilla pointed out the window. "Is that the car for your wedding?"

A black bulletproof sedan was parked downstairs. The body had been specially reinforced, and the glass was so thick that it was almost impossible to see inside.

Raffaello had that car prepared for me three months ago.

On the day of the wedding, the car would pick me up from the estate and take me to the church. Not only would there be four escort vehicles in front and four behind, but the family's most reliable security team would also follow the whole way.

Camilla stared at the car, transfixed.

"It's gorgeous. You must feel so safe sitting inside," she said enviously.

Mamma's expression immediately changed, and Papa also fell silent. The two of them exchanged a glance, and I already knew what they were going to say.

Sure enough, Mamma said, "There'll be lots of people at the wedding, and Camilla isn't in good health. What if something happens to her?"

She then turned to me and asked, "Why don't you let Camilla have that car?"

Before I could even answer, Raffaello had already taken out his phone.

"Sure," he said, then sent a message to the head of security, Marco Coppola. "On the day of the wedding, Camilla rides in Car A."

I let out a self-deprecating laugh. "Then what about me?"

"You take Car B," he replied matter-of-factly. "Even though it's not as well-equipped, you'd still have protection all the same."

Camilla bit her lip. "Forget it. That's Dafne's bridal car."

Raffaello turned off his phone screen. "She won't mind."

After saying that, he looked at me, as if waiting for me to nod.

I suddenly remembered that when I was 13 years old, Papa's convoy was ambushed on the way back to the estate. When the gunshots rang out, Mamma was the first to push me aside and shove Camilla into the bulletproof car.

Before the car door closed, I heard her shout, "Get Camilla out of here first!"

Later, I was hit by a stray bullet. On top of that, it was the family's bodyguards who escorted me into another car.

After returning home, Mamma held the frightened Camilla and cried all night.

No one thought of me.

I silently withdrew my gaze.

"Camilla can have Car A."

Only then did a faint smile appear at the corner of Raffaello's lips.

"I knew I could count on you to be sensible," he said.

I smiled too.

There were still six days left. After that, I would never have to be sensible again.

Valeley had already fallen into chaos.First, the Donatelli family lost a long-term shipowner; then, a rival family intercepted a shipment at the East Port. Later, two senior family members took advantage of Raffaello's absence to demand a redistribution of control over the docks.Marco called Raffaello more than a dozen times a day, urging him to return, but he still remained in Mazzino. Finally, the family council issued an ultimatum."Don Donatelli, if you don't come back, the East Port may no longer be ours," Marco reported.Raffaello sat in the car, watching my office from a distance. That afternoon, Teodoro stopped by to deliver a contract. As he was leaving, he took a key out of his pocket."The office upstairs is empty, and the one you have now is too small."I took the key and tossed it in my hand twice. "Are you giving it to me for free?""Dream on. We'll go by market price."I burst out laughing. "I don't want it then."He reached out to take the key back, but I i

Camilla walked in with little color in her face and sneered, "You must be very pleased with yourself.""Get out," I said without looking up, continuing to sign the documents.Camilla didn't move from where she was standing."Raffaello froze my foundation's account and took back all the bodyguards, the driver, and the estate. Papa and Mamma even got into a fight with him over looking for you."She gritted her teeth. "But don't think you've won. The only reason Raffaello is looking for you is that he can't accept you leaving, and not because he loves you."I let out a laugh. "Isn't that even better?"Camilla was stunned. "What do you mean?""You want him, whereas I don't. No one's fighting you for him now."Camilla's expression darkened by the second. "Dafne, you can drop the act! You had everything since you were young, while I was the one with poor health. So, what's wrong with Papa and Mamma loving me a little more?"She swept the documents off the desk, and the vase shattere

The moment Raffaello burst into the office, the whole place went quiet.I was checking the reports. When I looked up and saw him, I barely reacted."What are you doing here?" I asked. His expression instantly changed. It was as if, after he'd traveled all this way to find me, I should've at least been shocked, or cried, or asked him why he'd taken so long to come. Yet, I did none of those things. He quickly walked up to me."Come back with me," he ordered.I put down my pen. "Why should I?""I'll hold another wedding." He pulled a velvet box from his pocket. I got the brooch back too."When I looked at the emerald brooch, all I felt was how unfamiliar it seemed."And then what?"Raffaello froze. "And then we get married. This time there won't be any Camilla."I burst out laughing. "Raffaello, do you really think I ran off because of the wedding?"His Adam's apple bobbed. "I know it was more than that."I suddenly cut him off, and he froze."Do you know that when I was 13

Teodoro tossed a contract onto my desk without making an appointment."That batch of goods yesterday was mine."I looked up at him. "And so?""I was originally planning to switch carriers." He sat down across from me, leaning back lazily. "But now I'm not going to do that."I flipped open the contract. The amount was 15 percent higher than the old one."What are the conditions?""Next quarter, the three North Carica routes go to you as well."I frowned. "But those routes are very risky.""I know.""Why are you still giving them to me then?"Teodoro looked at me. "Because yesterday you solved in two hours a problem that others couldn't solve in two days." He stood up and raised his index finger. "You've got one month to prove you deserve this contract.""Fine," I said, not bothering with pleasantries. That same day, I overhauled three shipping routes by making sweeping changes to countless details.Half a month later, the first batch of goods arrived at the port without a h

Mamma's first words were, "I'm sure Dafne is just throwing a tantrum. Where can she run off to anyway? The whole family is here today—how are we supposed to face everyone?"Raffaello suddenly looked up, his gaze falling on Camilla's chest. The emerald brooch was still there."Take it off," he ordered.Camilla froze. "What?""I said take it off!"Her eyes immediately turned red. "But you personally—"Raffaello ripped off the brooch. The sharp pin tore through the dress, and Camilla gasped in pain.Just then, Marco hurried back in."Don Donatelli, someone at San Giorgio's Pier found out that Signora Dafne contacted Diego a week ago."A week ago? Raffaello was completely struck dumb.It turned out I had already been planning to leave since then.Marco paused, then added, "There's one more thing. When we contacted Dr. Livingston to confirm the trip, he said he'll be coming to Battenland again next month."All the color drained out of Camilla's face in an instant.Raffaello slo

Raffaello entered the ballroom with Camilla, and the family members rose one after another."Where's Dafne?" he asked as he handed his gloves to Marco. The wedding coordinator, Caterina Bellini, turned pale."Don Donatelli, Signora Dafne didn't come to the hotel today."Raffaello's expression darkened. "Then go to the estate to pick her up. What is she throwing a fit about this time?"Caterina swallowed before answering, "Signora Dafne isn't at the estate either."Just then, Marco hurried in from the doorway with a black velvet box in his hand."Don Donatelli."Raffaello took it and opened it. Inside lay my engagement ring. His grip abruptly tightened."Where did you get this?" he asked."A household staff member said a dock worker delivered it to the estate."Raffaello's head snapped up. "The docks? Which dock?"Marco's expression changed. "He said he didn't know."Raffaello turned immediately and strode to the door."Lock down the airports, train stations, highways, and
