Chapter 3

Author: Chelsea
After the car pulled to a stop, I had just walked toward the front passenger seat when Raffaello reached out to stop me.

"Camilla sits in front," he said.

I looked at him. "Why?"

"Because she gets carsick easily."

Camilla stood beside us, looking troubled. "I can sit in the back too."

But Raffaello had already opened the car door for her.

"Get in."

Camilla glanced at me, then ultimately got in.

I sat alone in the back seat.

The whole way there, they chatted happily in the front. At times they talked about the foundation's evening gala, and other times about the cargo at the port.

Raffaello would occasionally turn around to ask me, "Why aren't you saying anything?"

"Because there's nothing to say," I replied.

He frowned. "Are you still sulking about the wedding?"

I looked out the car window. "No."

That satisfied him. "Good, then."

The seaside estate was Raffaello's gift to me as our marital home, and I spent half a year choosing the furniture.

The largest suite on the east side of the second floor faced the sea. I designed everything in that room myself—the curtains, the bed, the fireplace, right down to the carpet pattern.

But once Camilla went in, she planted herself by the floor-to-ceiling window and refused to budge.

"The air here is really nice." She pushed the window open. "Dr. Santoro has always told me to live somewhere close to the sea."

Mamma immediately perked up. "In that case, you should come by more often in the future."

Camilla shook her head. "This is Dafne's marital home. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to move in."

Raffaello swept his gaze over the room.

"If you like it, it's yours."

I sneered inwardly, not surprised in the least.

"The east wing has always been self-contained anyway. I'll have it converted into a suite for you," Raffaello offered.

I crossed my arms and asked, "And where will we live?"

"The west wing."

"But that area's quite small."

"We'll manage."

I gazed at him quietly for a few seconds, then finally gave in.

"Fine."

Raffaello smiled and rubbed my arm.

"Dafne, you've been great just as you are lately. You don't need to fight with Camilla over every little thing."

I offered no reply.

That night was the 20th anniversary of when Raffaello and I first met, and he had booked a private restaurant on the top floor of a building at the port.

At 7:00 pm, I sat alone by the window. Half an hour later, my phone rang.

"Camilla is experiencing chest pain," Raffaello said, a jumble of footsteps audible on his end. "I'm at the hospital."

Holding the wine glass in one hand, I asked, "Is it serious?"

"Dr. Santoro is still examining her." After a pause, he added, "I might not make it until later."

My fingers froze. "It's fine."

By the time I ended the call, the main course on the table had already gone cold.

I sat there for ten minutes before finally having the driver, Stefano Caruso, take me to the hospital.

The private hospital room was slightly ajar. Camilla was already sitting up, looking perfectly fine.

Dr. Santoro stood by the bed explaining the test results.

"Her ECG and blood tests are all normal. One night of observation and she should be fine."

I stood outside the door, with Raffaello's back to me. In his hand was a dark green velvet box, and inside was an emerald brooch. I recognized it as the one his Madre, Viola Bianchi, had passed down to him.

On the day we got engaged, Raffaello had said to me, "I'll personally put this emerald brooch on you before the wedding. From then on, it'll be yours."

And yet, he was pinning that brooch onto Camilla's chest at this very moment.

Mamma came over from the other end. The moment she saw me, her expression immediately darkened.

"Why are you dressed like that? This is a hospital, for god's sake."

I looked down at my dress. It was the one Raffaello liked most.

"Today is our anniversary."

Mamma scoffed. "Camilla just got admitted to the emergency room, and all you can think about is your anniversary?"

Just then, Raffaello finally noticed me. For a moment, his gaze was uneasy.

He looked away and said, "Dafne, I'll buy you a new brooch later."

I smirked at him. "Don't bother."

He frowned and said, "It's just a piece of jewelry. Don't take everything so seriously."

"You're right," I replied with a nod.

After returning to the estate, I gathered up all the things he had given me over the years—watches, earrings, old photographs, and the bottle of wine we had drunk when we got engaged. Then, I packed them all into a box.

The butler, Riccardo Ricci, would send it to the charity auction for me the next day.

Once that was all done, I crossed off another day on the calendar.

There were still three days to go.

Valeley had already fallen into chaos.First, the Donatelli family lost a long-term shipowner; then, a rival family intercepted a shipment at the East Port. Later, two senior family members took advantage of Raffaello's absence to demand a redistribution of control over the docks.Marco called Raffaello more than a dozen times a day, urging him to return, but he still remained in Mazzino. Finally, the family council issued an ultimatum."Don Donatelli, if you don't come back, the East Port may no longer be ours," Marco reported.Raffaello sat in the car, watching my office from a distance. That afternoon, Teodoro stopped by to deliver a contract. As he was leaving, he took a key out of his pocket."The office upstairs is empty, and the one you have now is too small."I took the key and tossed it in my hand twice. "Are you giving it to me for free?""Dream on. We'll go by market price."I burst out laughing. "I don't want it then."He reached out to take the key back, but I i

Camilla walked in with little color in her face and sneered, "You must be very pleased with yourself.""Get out," I said without looking up, continuing to sign the documents.Camilla didn't move from where she was standing."Raffaello froze my foundation's account and took back all the bodyguards, the driver, and the estate. Papa and Mamma even got into a fight with him over looking for you."She gritted her teeth. "But don't think you've won. The only reason Raffaello is looking for you is that he can't accept you leaving, and not because he loves you."I let out a laugh. "Isn't that even better?"Camilla was stunned. "What do you mean?""You want him, whereas I don't. No one's fighting you for him now."Camilla's expression darkened by the second. "Dafne, you can drop the act! You had everything since you were young, while I was the one with poor health. So, what's wrong with Papa and Mamma loving me a little more?"She swept the documents off the desk, and the vase shattere

The moment Raffaello burst into the office, the whole place went quiet.I was checking the reports. When I looked up and saw him, I barely reacted."What are you doing here?" I asked. His expression instantly changed. It was as if, after he'd traveled all this way to find me, I should've at least been shocked, or cried, or asked him why he'd taken so long to come. Yet, I did none of those things. He quickly walked up to me."Come back with me," he ordered.I put down my pen. "Why should I?""I'll hold another wedding." He pulled a velvet box from his pocket. I got the brooch back too."When I looked at the emerald brooch, all I felt was how unfamiliar it seemed."And then what?"Raffaello froze. "And then we get married. This time there won't be any Camilla."I burst out laughing. "Raffaello, do you really think I ran off because of the wedding?"His Adam's apple bobbed. "I know it was more than that."I suddenly cut him off, and he froze."Do you know that when I was 13

Teodoro tossed a contract onto my desk without making an appointment."That batch of goods yesterday was mine."I looked up at him. "And so?""I was originally planning to switch carriers." He sat down across from me, leaning back lazily. "But now I'm not going to do that."I flipped open the contract. The amount was 15 percent higher than the old one."What are the conditions?""Next quarter, the three North Carica routes go to you as well."I frowned. "But those routes are very risky.""I know.""Why are you still giving them to me then?"Teodoro looked at me. "Because yesterday you solved in two hours a problem that others couldn't solve in two days." He stood up and raised his index finger. "You've got one month to prove you deserve this contract.""Fine," I said, not bothering with pleasantries. That same day, I overhauled three shipping routes by making sweeping changes to countless details.Half a month later, the first batch of goods arrived at the port without a h

Mamma's first words were, "I'm sure Dafne is just throwing a tantrum. Where can she run off to anyway? The whole family is here today—how are we supposed to face everyone?"Raffaello suddenly looked up, his gaze falling on Camilla's chest. The emerald brooch was still there."Take it off," he ordered.Camilla froze. "What?""I said take it off!"Her eyes immediately turned red. "But you personally—"Raffaello ripped off the brooch. The sharp pin tore through the dress, and Camilla gasped in pain.Just then, Marco hurried back in."Don Donatelli, someone at San Giorgio's Pier found out that Signora Dafne contacted Diego a week ago."A week ago? Raffaello was completely struck dumb.It turned out I had already been planning to leave since then.Marco paused, then added, "There's one more thing. When we contacted Dr. Livingston to confirm the trip, he said he'll be coming to Battenland again next month."All the color drained out of Camilla's face in an instant.Raffaello slo

Raffaello entered the ballroom with Camilla, and the family members rose one after another."Where's Dafne?" he asked as he handed his gloves to Marco. The wedding coordinator, Caterina Bellini, turned pale."Don Donatelli, Signora Dafne didn't come to the hotel today."Raffaello's expression darkened. "Then go to the estate to pick her up. What is she throwing a fit about this time?"Caterina swallowed before answering, "Signora Dafne isn't at the estate either."Just then, Marco hurried in from the doorway with a black velvet box in his hand."Don Donatelli."Raffaello took it and opened it. Inside lay my engagement ring. His grip abruptly tightened."Where did you get this?" he asked."A household staff member said a dock worker delivered it to the estate."Raffaello's head snapped up. "The docks? Which dock?"Marco's expression changed. "He said he didn't know."Raffaello turned immediately and strode to the door."Lock down the airports, train stations, highways, and
