Chapter 4

Author: Chelsea
The day before the wedding, we learned that the heart specialist from Woodwick, Harold Livingston, would have a four-hour stopover in Valeley tomorrow morning.

After that, it would be another three months before he returned to Battenland.

Sitting at the breakfast table, Camilla shook her head and said, "Never mind. Dafne's wedding is more important."

Mamma shot to her feet at once. "Nonsense! What if something goes wrong with your health during those three months?" She then turned to me and ordered, "Dafne, move the wedding to the evening."

Before I could say anything, Papa had already nodded. "We'll rearrange things with the church and accompany Camilla to the hospital during the day."

I looked at Raffaello. He was reviewing the information Dr. Livingston had sent. After a few seconds, he nodded and said, "That works."

"What about the church ceremony?" I asked with a smile.

"Cancel it."

"And the outdoor photoshoot at the port?"

"We'll do it later."

"The family oath?"

"Move it to dinner," he said, then looked up at me. "It's just a formality anyway. Since when did you care so much about these things?"

Camilla's eyes immediately reddened. "Forget it. I won't see Dr. Livingston. I don't want Dafne to have to compromise her wedding because of me."

Raffaello frowned. "It has nothing to do with you." Then, he turned back to me. "Dafne is the most sensible—she'll understand."

I let out a helpless laugh and nodded. "Okay."

Raffaello relaxed. "Once the wedding's over, I'll go with you for a whole new photoshoot."

I merely smiled, for I had long since stopped expecting anything from his promises.

That night, I went to the port.

The person Diego had sent was waiting outside an abandoned warehouse.

"We depart at 11:00 am on the dot," he said.

The next morning, the estate's lights came on at 5:00 am.

Papa was urging Stefano to check the route, while Mamma held Camilla's medicine kit. Raffaello changed into his black suit and was the last to come downstairs.

Camilla stood at the doorway in her coat, the emerald brooch still pinned to her chest.

Raffaello walked up to me and said, "Go to the hotel by yourself. The stylist will arrive at 10:00 am."

I looked at him. "When will you be back?"

"Before 1:00 pm," he replied, but then changed his answer. "I'll be back by 3:00 pm at the latest. The wedding dinner starts at 7:00 pm, so there's still plenty of time."

Leaning against the car door, Camilla said, "Dafne, I'm sorry for delaying your wedding."

I smiled. "It's fine."

After all, there wouldn't be a wedding anyway.

Raffaello bent down and kissed my forehead. "Be good. I'll come back tonight to marry you."

I didn't dodge, because this was the last time.

The convoy quickly left the estate. I stood at the steps watching until the last car disappeared, then turned and went upstairs.

The wedding gown was hanging in the middle of the changing room, but I quickly changed into some casual clothes without sparing it so much as a glance.

At 10:40 am, the driver dropped me off in the north of the city, and the boat left San Giorgio's Pier at 11:00 am on the dot.

"You're really leaving?" Diego asked me from outside the wheelhouse.

I watched the coastline grow more distant. "Yeah."

"Raffaello will come looking for you. He'll even mobilize the entire family or even the whole of Valeley to find you. Are you really going to do this?"

I let out a laugh, then took out the ring and handed it to a crew member.

"Deliver this to the estate this afternoon," I ordered. After that, I looked at Diego with determination. "This is my answer."

The boat continued south, and the coastline gradually dwindled to a sliver on the horizon.

Valeley had already fallen into chaos.First, the Donatelli family lost a long-term shipowner; then, a rival family intercepted a shipment at the East Port. Later, two senior family members took advantage of Raffaello's absence to demand a redistribution of control over the docks.Marco called Raffaello more than a dozen times a day, urging him to return, but he still remained in Mazzino. Finally, the family council issued an ultimatum."Don Donatelli, if you don't come back, the East Port may no longer be ours," Marco reported.Raffaello sat in the car, watching my office from a distance. That afternoon, Teodoro stopped by to deliver a contract. As he was leaving, he took a key out of his pocket."The office upstairs is empty, and the one you have now is too small."I took the key and tossed it in my hand twice. "Are you giving it to me for free?""Dream on. We'll go by market price."I burst out laughing. "I don't want it then."He reached out to take the key back, but I i

Camilla walked in with little color in her face and sneered, "You must be very pleased with yourself.""Get out," I said without looking up, continuing to sign the documents.Camilla didn't move from where she was standing."Raffaello froze my foundation's account and took back all the bodyguards, the driver, and the estate. Papa and Mamma even got into a fight with him over looking for you."She gritted her teeth. "But don't think you've won. The only reason Raffaello is looking for you is that he can't accept you leaving, and not because he loves you."I let out a laugh. "Isn't that even better?"Camilla was stunned. "What do you mean?""You want him, whereas I don't. No one's fighting you for him now."Camilla's expression darkened by the second. "Dafne, you can drop the act! You had everything since you were young, while I was the one with poor health. So, what's wrong with Papa and Mamma loving me a little more?"She swept the documents off the desk, and the vase shattere

The moment Raffaello burst into the office, the whole place went quiet.I was checking the reports. When I looked up and saw him, I barely reacted."What are you doing here?" I asked. His expression instantly changed. It was as if, after he'd traveled all this way to find me, I should've at least been shocked, or cried, or asked him why he'd taken so long to come. Yet, I did none of those things. He quickly walked up to me."Come back with me," he ordered.I put down my pen. "Why should I?""I'll hold another wedding." He pulled a velvet box from his pocket. I got the brooch back too."When I looked at the emerald brooch, all I felt was how unfamiliar it seemed."And then what?"Raffaello froze. "And then we get married. This time there won't be any Camilla."I burst out laughing. "Raffaello, do you really think I ran off because of the wedding?"His Adam's apple bobbed. "I know it was more than that."I suddenly cut him off, and he froze."Do you know that when I was 13

Teodoro tossed a contract onto my desk without making an appointment."That batch of goods yesterday was mine."I looked up at him. "And so?""I was originally planning to switch carriers." He sat down across from me, leaning back lazily. "But now I'm not going to do that."I flipped open the contract. The amount was 15 percent higher than the old one."What are the conditions?""Next quarter, the three North Carica routes go to you as well."I frowned. "But those routes are very risky.""I know.""Why are you still giving them to me then?"Teodoro looked at me. "Because yesterday you solved in two hours a problem that others couldn't solve in two days." He stood up and raised his index finger. "You've got one month to prove you deserve this contract.""Fine," I said, not bothering with pleasantries. That same day, I overhauled three shipping routes by making sweeping changes to countless details.Half a month later, the first batch of goods arrived at the port without a h

Mamma's first words were, "I'm sure Dafne is just throwing a tantrum. Where can she run off to anyway? The whole family is here today—how are we supposed to face everyone?"Raffaello suddenly looked up, his gaze falling on Camilla's chest. The emerald brooch was still there."Take it off," he ordered.Camilla froze. "What?""I said take it off!"Her eyes immediately turned red. "But you personally—"Raffaello ripped off the brooch. The sharp pin tore through the dress, and Camilla gasped in pain.Just then, Marco hurried back in."Don Donatelli, someone at San Giorgio's Pier found out that Signora Dafne contacted Diego a week ago."A week ago? Raffaello was completely struck dumb.It turned out I had already been planning to leave since then.Marco paused, then added, "There's one more thing. When we contacted Dr. Livingston to confirm the trip, he said he'll be coming to Battenland again next month."All the color drained out of Camilla's face in an instant.Raffaello slo

Raffaello entered the ballroom with Camilla, and the family members rose one after another."Where's Dafne?" he asked as he handed his gloves to Marco. The wedding coordinator, Caterina Bellini, turned pale."Don Donatelli, Signora Dafne didn't come to the hotel today."Raffaello's expression darkened. "Then go to the estate to pick her up. What is she throwing a fit about this time?"Caterina swallowed before answering, "Signora Dafne isn't at the estate either."Just then, Marco hurried in from the doorway with a black velvet box in his hand."Don Donatelli."Raffaello took it and opened it. Inside lay my engagement ring. His grip abruptly tightened."Where did you get this?" he asked."A household staff member said a dock worker delivered it to the estate."Raffaello's head snapped up. "The docks? Which dock?"Marco's expression changed. "He said he didn't know."Raffaello turned immediately and strode to the door."Lock down the airports, train stations, highways, and
