Chapter 2

Author: Spring Pool
I slept terribly that night, my mind stuck replaying two decades' worth of memories.

If Ivy wanted something, Mom and Dad would hand it over without a second thought. I remembered asking for a new school uniform—because my old one had worn through and become a source of ridicule—only for Mom to chew me out for being wasteful instead.

It wasn't even light out yet when a noise from the living room jolted me awake. I opened the door and stepped out, then froze. Ethan, Khloe, Ivy, Mom, and Dad were all there, gathered around the coffee table and happily looking through the photos the photographer had taken the day before.

Ivy leaned against Mom's shoulder and pointed to a photo on the screen. "I like this one. Ethan and I look so good together in this, Mom."

Mom was grinning from ear to ear. "You've always been beautiful since you were young, Ivy. Not like Violet, who's always walking around with that sour look on her face."

Khloe chimed in right away. "Exactly! Violet has always been so broody! She's got nothing on Ivy!"

Ethan looked at the photo of Ivy holding onto his arm, a smile appearing on his face.

They didn't seem to notice me standing at the hallway entrance.

It was only when I walked over to the coffee table that the laughter abruptly stopped, leaving the room completely silent for a beat.

Mom looked up and frowned slightly, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "You're still willing to show your face around here, huh? If Ivy hadn't stepped in and entertained the guests for you yesterday, you would've made a complete fool of our family, Violet!"

I sneered and exposed their lie on the spot. "Didn't you scheme this whole thing out from the beginning? You have always intended to sacrifice me just so Ivy could get what she wanted."

Mom and Dad noticeably tensed up.

I clenched my fists, overwhelmed by resentment and hurt. "If your plan was always to let her take over the wedding, why not tell me from the beginning? I would have stepped aside gracefully rather than being forced to uncover the truth in such a cruel way!"

I had to uncover the truth that no one truly loved me.

Ivy suddenly came rushing over the moment I finished speaking. She grabbed my hand as tears streamed down her face. "I'm the one to blame here, Violet. Mom and Dad had nothing to do with this. It's all my fault. I did this all on my own, Violet…"

She dropped to her knees after saying that, hitting the floor with a loud thud. "I'll beg you on my knees, alright? Please forgive me, Violet…"

"Ivy!" Ethan closed the distance in two strides and hauled her up. He then turned and yelled at me, "That's enough, Violet! Ivy is your sister! How could you make her kneel before you? What the hell is wrong with you?"

Mom pointed straight at my face, flushing red with anger. "You brought all of this on yourself! You could never bear to see Ivy doing better than you growing up. If you'd found out that Ethan was the one she had feelings for, who knows what kind of scene you would've thrown?

"You would've gone straight to trashing her to everyone, calling her a homewrecker for trying to steal your man!"

I stayed rooted in place, watching them all crowd around Ivy. Ethan wrapped his arms around her, Khloe rubbed her back soothingly, and Mom held her hand tight, saying, "It's going to be alright, Ivy. I'm right here with you."

Every single one of them looked at me like I was the enemy.

In that instant, tears welled up as I forced the words out through gritted teeth. "Isn't she a homewrecker? She's been taking whatever I loved since we were kids—my clothes, my school supplies, and now even the man I was supposed to marry.

"Why does it always have to be me who gives everything up? She's your daughter, but aren't I your daughter too?"

Mom slapped me hard across the face, the loud crack echoing throughout the living room.

I turned sharply to the side as a burning sting spread across my face.

Mom then pointed at me and barked, "That's enough! Do you intend to push Ivy over the edge? Do you not see how badly she's crying? How could you still go after her, Violet?"

I chuckled bitterly, blood dripping down my chin from the corner of my mouth. It had always been this way. I had always been the one to blame, no matter what happened. How could I have expected them to change after hearing about all my grievances? "It's all my fault, then! I'll just get out of your way for good!"

A month passed. Mom managed to get hold of my new number through a mutual acquaintance. She called right in the middle of a meeting, so I just silenced my phone and ignored it. She called seven times, and I didn't answer a single one of them. She eventually messaged me. "I'm so sorry, Violet. I've learned my mistake now. Can you please come home? It just doesn't feel the same without you here. Your father hasn't been doing well either. He keeps asking about you. I made your favorite honey-glazed ribs, so please come home and have some, Violet…"I didn't bother replying. I simply blocked her number instead. It was half a month later when Dad suddenly called from a different number. He told me that he had been hospitalized and wanted me to visit him. He said he just wanted to see me once, even if it was only for a moment. I merely told him to get some rest and focus on recovering since he was hospitalized. I then hung up and blocked his number too.I heard later on that Ethan still

Ethan didn't leave. He stood outside my studio from the afternoon until nightfall. Security drove him away three times, but he still refused to go. He insisted on waiting for me.I opened my office door the following morning and found a bouquet of white roses sitting outside. It came with a card that read, "I remember you like white roses."I instantly recognized Ethan's handwriting. I picked up the bouquet and tossed it into the trash at the end of the hallway. He sent over a dozen mango smoothies to the studio on the third day. "I remember this was always your favorite, so I picked some up for your employees too."I didn't drink any. I had the receptionist distribute them to the employees. He waited outside my studio on the fifth day, holding a huge bouquet of red roses. Those passing by kept glancing at him.He immediately came over when I walked out of the elevator after work. "Please hear me out, Violet. That's all I'm asking for."I stopped and looked at him. Ethan tracked down every place Violet could have gone. He sought out her former university classmates, former colleagues, and former roommates.Every one of them said they hadn't seen her.Someone had even straight-up slammed the door in his face. "Violet hasn't talked to me in forever, so stop bothering me! I knew from the start that you weren't reliable, but she refused to hear it—and now look what happened! "If you can't find her, then she clearly doesn't want to see you. What's the point of keeping this up, Ethan?"He stood in front of the closed door and suddenly felt like laughing at himself. Violet had already burned every bridge behind her before leaving. She had done it decisively, leaving nothing behind for him to cling to.He finally stopped searching after a month, not because he wanted to give up. His company eventually called to inform him that he had been automatically terminated for missing too many days of work. When he returned home, he found Ivy sitting on the

Ivy's expression shifted. She stepped back and stared intently at Ethan. "Get a grip, Ethan! You stopped loving Violet long ago! Why tie yourself to her for the rest of your life—for someone you don't even love anymore!"Ethan was at a loss for words. He tried to speak up, but not a single sound came out.Ivy scoffed. "Just be honest with yourself for once, Ethan. Did you ever feel happy being with her in the past six months? You were irritated every time you got a message from her, and you never answered when she called. You were just forcing yourself to endure it. You saw her as nothing but a burden, Ethan."Every single word cut deep.Ethan's breathing grew ragged. "That's enough, Ivy.""Am I wrong, Ethan? You would've never admitted that you stopped loving her if she hadn't left! I've gotten her out of the way for you! You should be thanking me instead!"Ethan suddenly looked up and stared at Ivy. Her face was identical to Violet's, but her eyes were completely different. V

Ivy emerged from the bedroom with a facial mask on, sounding unconcerned. "Is it really that big of a deal that Violet blocked you? She's just doing it to scare you guys. She'll come running back once she's out of money in a couple of days."Gwen stared at the undelivered message on her phone screen, feeling a sudden void in her chest. She recalled what Violet had told her over the phone that day. "Today was supposed to be my wedding; I'm supposed to be the bride, Mom."She had actually chastised Violet for making the whole family miserable over a wedding. She had called Violet selfish, saying that she had always been that way since she was a kid. She had slapped her hard enough to draw blood at the corner of her mouth.Violet didn't even shed a single tear back then. She had simply stared at her, as though she were looking at a stranger.Gwen suddenly felt short of breath. She held onto the couch for support and sat down, her palms sweating.David said, his expression grim, "Go l

Third-Person POVIn the meantime, after Violet's departure, an unbearable silence settled over the house.Gwen Sandler, Violet's mother, initially welcomed the silence. She no longer had to see Violet hanging around or endure her bitter, resentful accusations.Ivy naturally moved into Violet's room. Her cosmetics cluttered every inch of Violet's vanity, while the closet was jammed with new clothes. She even swapped out the sheets for her favorite light pink ones. She walked around the bedroom with her arm linked through Ethan's, discussing places to redo the space. She wanted to tear down the wall covered in wedding decorations and repaint it with the muted colors she preferred.Ethan nodded and agreed, but when three separate renovation crews arrived, he dismissed them all under various pretexts. In the end, the wall remained untouched, along with the wedding decorations plastered all over it.Gwen gradually began to feel uneasy, and old habits started betraying her.
