Chapter 3 The Kiss

Penulis: Bright Lights
I shook my head and pointed at the plate. Then, I said politely, "Thank you, but I like seafood pasta very much. You do not have to trouble yourself."

Ronald frowned. "I don't like it when you talk like that."

What, was he expecting me to prostrate myself and express my unwavering and undying gratitude to him for making me food? I put on a smile that looked more like a sneer before going back to my food.

Unfortunately, tonight was so not my night. Even my fork was working against me. My hand shook right after I twirled up a mouthful of pasta, causing it to fall back onto the plate. The sauce splashed against Ronald's face.

Silence fell between us. I could sense Selina had stopped eating right away while I kept tabs on Ronald through the corner of my eye. He was wiping the sauce off his chin with a tissue. His face was tense, and he sighed.

Then, he took my fork and plate. I stared at him in shock. Yes, I might've embarrassed him in front of his true love, but keeping dinner from me was a touch too far.

"I'll feed you—"

"Don't take my din—"

We spoke at the same time, and froze. His lips twitched, perhaps from a mirthless smile. After dinner, Ronald was going to the guest room and clean it up for Selina.

Ronald's choice to dismiss the servants had given them an opening to have an affair right beneath my nose. The thunder was getting louder, and Selina was scared of thunder in the story. I knew Ronald wasn't coming back to bed that night.

So, I felt a little dejected as I sat on my bed and hugged my legs, while my eyes scanned my surroundings. The room was filled with the scent of Ronald and me, and I was the one who had placed all the decor.

No one knew that the bedroom of the aloof Ronald was filled with plushies and colorful decor. Alas, Ronald wasn't mine now. Then again, he never was mine.

I stared at the bedroom's door, counting down to the moment the system took me back. Yet, it didn't matter how hard I blinked as all I saw was the same old door. So, I asked the system what was going on.

The system was confused, and it kept checking the protocol. "The protocol shouldn't be malfunctioning. Maybe they haven't gotten to fourth base."

I pouted in disdain. "Your protocol sucks. Do you expect me to help them out or something?"

It seemed that the system figured that it was a grand idea. "You're right! We don't know how far along they are. Maybe you should check it out!"

Wow, what a way to crush my heart. Then again, we would never see each other again after tonight. So, I got out of bed and wore my slippers. Then, I went over to the guest room for our final meeting.

I snuck to their room but heard nothing coming from within. The door was ajar, so I tried to find the perfect angle that would let me take a peek at how far along they were going at it inside. Yet, all I saw was Selina smiling on her bed no matter how hard I looked.

Ronald must've done something stellar to make her smile so happily. I peeked my head out as far as I could, but I'd forgotten that I would risk exposure if I leaned ahead.

"What are you doing?" A voice came from behind. It nearly made me jump and fall, but a strong arm pulled me back up and kept me steady.

I turned around only to see Ronald giving me a weird look. He was holding earplugs. Selina noticed the commotion, and she came out holding her phone.

It was then I realized she had been on a video call alone.

"What are you doing here?" I blurted.

An imperceptible smile curled Ronald's lips, but he said, "That's my line."

"I thought…" I started, but I had no idea how to finish that sentence.

"You thought?" Ronald arched his eyebrow and put his arm around my waist right in front of Selina.

I was going to push him away, but he leaned down and chuckled into my ear. "Are you jealous, Jessica?"

I looked at Selina, whose eyes were growing wide with disbelief. Just when I was about to argue my innocence, Ronald kissed me right in front of her.

I watched Ronald from the entrance of the kitchen. Golden sunlight lent his back a shining silhouette. Ronald was one of the big shots who commanded attention in the business world. Yet, he was happy to cook for me when he came home.He poured his love into everything he did for me over the last three years. The food, the late-night flights, and everywhere else I didn't notice. Fortunately, I was finally seeing them.Birds were singing outside the window, and the city afar was shimmering after the rain.Back in the kitchen, Ronald turned around and smiled. "Come over and have a taste test."I went and took a sip from the spoonful of soup he held out."How is it?""It's perfect," I said. "Not too strong, but not too mild either. It's exactly just right."He smiled and pecked the corner of my lips. "That's good to know."The soup was bubbling, and steam curled into the air, warming up the kitchen into a cozy temperature. The coming storm was still brewing on the ocean. Still, th

I said quietly in my mind, "System.""Present.""Thanks.""Whatever for?""For changing the protocol."The system chuckled. "Don't worry about it. The protocol might've been changed, but the condition still stands. If he does betray you one day…""He won't," I interrupted."You seem very sure about that.""Because I am." I watched him help me change into slippers. He was down on one knee as he placed my foot on his other knee. He used his palm to warm my soles, cherishing me so dearly like I might break with one wrong move. "He's never let me down once in three years. It's my insecurity that messed things up, not him."A moment of silence later, the system said quietly, "I wish you happiness.""And I will have it."When Ronald was done helping me change into slippers, he stood up and kissed my forehead. "What do you want for dinner?""Anything's fine.""No cuisine goes by that name, I'm afraid.""Then, you'll have to whip up your best." I smiled at him. "I'll have anyth

"You're barefoot again. What's wr—"I stood on my tiptoes and kissed him. He froze for a moment before his body moved, wrapping one arm around my waist as he cupped the back of my head with his other hand. Then, he pulled me against him as he responded greedily.A dozen senior execs were still on the other side of the screen. They stared at us in wide-eyed disbelief before hastily turning their eyes away.Their gasps of shock didn't escape Ronald's notice. So, he closed his laptop and moved away. His forehead rested against mine, and his breathing was ragged. "What's wrong?" His voice was raspy, but his eyes were filled with surprise and disbelief."I remember everything," I said, my voice cracking. "I said I wanted to marry you back in high school."He was stunned. When the words finally registered, the man who commanded the business world, the man who would never lose composure, found the edges of his eyes going red."You remember?" His voice was shaking, and his hands were as

I leaned on the doorframe as I watched him putter about. Now, I couldn't help but find myself utterly stupid. I had wasted three years thinking that his genuine love for me was something else. I had wasted three years thinking all his care was just him projecting to a replacement. Then, I even took it for granted and gave him no response.I was so stupid that I nearly pushed away the man who showered me with nothing but love.Ronald went to the study for an online conference after breakfast, while I continued to space out on the living room's couch alone. My phone buzzed. Selina had sent me a follow request. I approved it, and she promptly DM'd me."Don't take it the wrong way. Ronald and I truly are just friends. He's been obsessed with you since high school. He might as well have turned into a living corpse when you went abroad."I stared at the message in utter confusion. High school? "What do you mean high school? We've known each other since then?"Selina went silent for a

I deleted the message again and ended up with an "Okay." I stared at the single word and suddenly found it such an eyesore. I was reminded of the old me, reminded of how I was unfailingly polite, courteous, always pleasing, always perfect, and always at a distance. When I washed myself up, I looked in the mirror and saw a reflection with puffy eyes and messy hair. My eyes remained on that reflection for a long, long time. For some reason, the person staring back at me felt unfamiliar even though she was wearing my face. This wasn't the face of a replacement. This was the face of Jessica. This was my face. Mine. I took a deep breath and opened the door. The scent of soup caressed me as I approached the staircase. Ronald's had whipped up one of his best dishes, rib-and-potato soup.He would make that soup whenever my stomach acted up. He would cut up the potato into fine little pieces, and blanch the ribs three times. It always took him an hour just to make it. Whenever I told him he

I chalked up all his kindness as the privilege of being someone else's replacement.Selina sighed. "That explains why you asked for my help.""Thanks, really," said Ronald. "But I think it backfired.""I beg to differ."A hint of teasing slid into Selina's voice. "She definitely gave you a reaction. That look on her face sure didn't look like she felt nothing.""What?""She cried when you kissed her."The corridor went quiet for a few moments. Then, Ronald said glumly, "That's because she was scared.""You're a great guy, Ronald, but you worry about scaring her too much," Selina said gently. "You don't have to be so careful. She's not a fragile doll.""I know she's not," said Ronald. However, his voice went quieter. It was as if he didn't want me to hear, but I still heard it as clear as day. "But I'm worried that she might leave if I push even a little.""She'll leave?""She's always wanted to," Ronald replied. "I don't know where she wants to go, but I have a feeling she's r
