At Reed Manor, Nightcrawler Pack

After a quiet lunch with Abner, his wife, and Althea, the Alpha King set his cup down and spoke in a measured voice. “I must ride out to inspect the borders. I will be gone for some time. While I am away, Althea will remain here.”

The words lit Althea’s face. Before she could think, she sprang forward and pressed a quick, impulsive kiss to his lips. Gavriel stiffened; Althea’s eyes widened as if she had been burned.

She stumbled back, cheeks flushing. “I’m sorry. I— I was carried away, Your Majesty,” she blurted, bowing her head.

Gavriel’s mouth tightened. “You still have a hangover from last night, it seems,” he said in that low, even tone that made her throat dry. Althea swallowed and lifted her face to meet his gaze. His stare pinned her, sharp and unreadable.

He turned to Abner. “Alpha Abner, I entrust Althea to your care. See that she remains safe and does not slip away. If she leaves your pack or is harmed while I am away, you will answer to me.”

Simon’s eyes darkened at her boldness. The confident tone in her voice sent a sharp jolt through him, and he had to draw in a slow, steady breath just to keep himself composed.“Melva,” he said warningly, his voice low and gravelly. “You have no idea what you’re playing with.”But Melva only grinned, leaning forward slightly, her eyes gleaming with mischief, something that made Simon’s chest tighten. “Oh, I do,” she replied softly. “You think I don’t feel it too? The pull. The bond. Every time you’re near, it’s like my heart’s no longer mine.”Simon’s jaw clenched. “That’s exactly why I’m trying to control it.”She tilted her head, studying him, her tone turning tender. “Then stop fighting it.”He looked at her, really looked at her, and it struck him again how stubbornly fearless she could be. She wasn’t trying to tempt him, not exactly. She was just being honest—open, real—and that was what made it even harder to resist.“Melva…” His voice dropped, almost a growl. “If I lose control

Melva woke up early, wanting to prepare breakfast for Simon. Her mate had come back so late the night before that she was already asleep. She was sure he would be up early again to leave for another important task—she barely saw him anymore. Still, she hoped she could at least catch him this morning before the sun fully rose. She quickly packed the meal into a basket and made her way to Simon’s assigned quarters next to hers. It was funny, she thought, how they were already bonded, yet had still not consummated it.Melva hesitated outside Simon’s door, holding the basket tightly against her chest. The hallway was quiet, only the faint sound of birds outside breaking the silence. She took a deep breath before knocking softly.“Simon?” she called, her voice low.No answer. She frowned and pushed the door open just a little. The room was dim, the curtains still drawn. Simon was there, sitting at his desk with a pile of documents in front of him. His head was resting on his hand on the ta

Althea was completely lost in the way Gavriel kissed her—rough, demanding, and utterly consuming. He hovered over her, his body pressing her down as he positioned himself between her thighs. She gasped against his mouth when she suddenly felt his solid thrusts, his lips still claiming hers as if he couldn’t bear to let her breathe. He wasn’t answering her question, maybe because she didn’t answer him as well. She wanted to tell him that she wouldn’t go, even if it was her father. She didn’t want to support her father’s cause. She knew that being with him would only mean another kind of prison—one where she’d have no freedom at all, forced to obey his every command or face his anger.Even as his favorite, she knew she was never free from his wrath. One mistake, one refusal, and she would pay for it.All Althea had ever wanted was freedom. Yet, a part of her couldn’t stop wondering what the Alpha King truly wanted from her. Surely, he wouldn’t let her escape, not until her father was

“What did you say?” Althea asked, wanting to make sure she’d heard him right. Did he really ask her that?Gavriel’s gaze held hers as he repeated, “Do you want to learn the mindlink?”Althea nodded, blinking in surprise. Then he smiled—warmly, genuinely—and her heart almost exploded at the sight. He had been smiling more often lately, and each time felt like the walls around him softened just for her.He pulled her close into his arms. She still felt sticky from what they’d done, but she didn’t care. His warmth surrounded her, grounding her in a way nothing else could. Then, he released a deep, steady sigh.[Can you hear me?]Althea froze. Her body went rigid the moment she heard Gavriel’s voice—not with her ears, but inside her head.“I hear you,” she whispered, her voice small and awed.He chuckled, and she could feel the vibration rumble through his chest where her head rested.[Now, there’s no barrier between us,] his voice spoke again in her mind—smooth, commanding, yet intimate.

Althea’s eyes flew open in shock, and out of instinct, she quickly turned away and squeezed her eyes shut. She couldn’t believe he caught her stealing a kiss from him, especially when they’d already done far more than just kiss countless times. Still, her heart raced. It felt different… she had kissed him while he slept. She bit her lip, trying to calm her breathing, but then froze when she felt Gavriel’s arm slide around her waist, pulling her back until her back pressed firmly against his chest.“You…” he grunted low against her ear.Her breath hitched as his lips began to trail down her neck, slow and deliberate. A shiver ran through her when his hand slid up to caress her breast, and she could feel the hard press of his desire against her lower back.“You started this, Althea,” he murmured against her skin, his voice deep and rough as his lips moved lower to her shoulder, licking and suckling with growing hunger.Althea bit her lower lip, trying to quiet the sound that threatened

Gavriel first checked on Uriel, who was now in the living area being tended to by Lakan. “Were you hit that badly?” Gavriel asked, frowning as he watched Lakan channel energy into Uriel’s wounds.“That warlock was strong,” Uriel replied, brow furrowed. “But he had an extra boost. Someone was amplifying his power, not just for the portal but during the fight as well. Whoever did that, I’ll make them pay for those cowardly moves.”“He’s a he, and Althea saw him,” Gavriel said. He turned to Simon. “Get me the best artist we have who can do a sketch. I want that bastard’s face by sunrise tomorrow.”“So the man showed himself to Lady Althea?” Uriel asked, signaling for Lakan to finish and dismiss the healer.Uriel pulled his shirt on and waited for Gavriel’s answer.“He did,” Gavriel confirmed. “Althea said that same presence has been hovering around her too, even inside the palace.”“What? But the royal estate’s defenses are tight, unless he’s powerful enough to breach the barrier,” Uriel
