Chapter 2

Author: Silent Farewell
Upon seeing the chaos in the courtroom and the relentless arguments from the public gallery, the judge slammed the table hard, signaling everyone to be silent.

"The prosecution's witness will now take the stand."

The main doors opened, and in walked a man who appeared to be the same age as me. I recognized him at one glance. He was Quentin Harper, my classmate from university.

"To the prosecution's witness, please give your statement."

"The defendant and I were part of the overpass construction project. I witnessed, with my very own eyes, the defendant's failure in relaying the order to suspend the construction work when he arrived at the construction site.

"Instead, the works continued, causing the overpass to collapse."

Quentin paused, as if he had more to say. He then continued, "The defendant and I met back in university. Back then, his character was already a little twisted, and he had a really bad reputation. I didn't think it'd be the same now…"

The spectators began to whisper amongst one another.

"Was this how he was back in school? It's no wonder he caused this accident. Once a villain, always a villain."

"It serves him right. He already had such a terrible reputation back in school, and his character and conduct basically went down the drain once he stepped into society. Just sentence him already, so that he doesn't commit any more crimes."

"To the prosecution's witness, please do not make leading statements," the judge interrupted Quentin, prompting the gallery to quieten down at the same time.

He turned toward me, his expression stern.

"Aaron Bennett, the prosecution's witness alleges that your failure to deliver critical information on time caused the accident at the construction site. How do you plead?"

I hadn't expected them to be so thorough in their tactics and evidence just to pin the blame on me—including Quentin, the other person in charge of this project.

We were in different departments. In fact, he had nothing to do with me at all. So, I couldn't quite wrap my head around his reason for showing up in court as a witness.

I glanced at the evidence they presented and saw that it was all incriminating. It was clear they were determined to back me into a corner.

Fortunately, I had learned that the court had just released a new trial system that made it possible for memories to be retrieved straight from one's mind. It was just that it was still in the trial phase and had not yet been implemented.

I shook my head and replied firmly, "I do not plead guilty to these allegations. I am innocent, Your Honor. Using the latest technology, I'd like to request a direct replay of my memories."

The moment I said that, the faces of those seated at the prosecution's side fell immediately.

David, his expression livid, was the first to voice his skepticism. "I object, Your Honor. I… We did not mention anything about using the new technology. Plus, whatever happened has happened.

"Aaron is just trying to buy time. Don't listen to him, Your Honor."

Wallace immediately chimed in with his objection too. "That's right. This new system has never been used before. Who knows if it's accurate? What if something goes wrong?

"Your Honor, please just sentence him based on the existing evidence."

Meanwhile, Leia looked absolutely worried. She softened her tone, no longer sounding as assertive as she had been earlier.

She chimed in, saying, "That's right. Quit pushing it, Ronnie. Memory extraction sounds extremely risky. What happens if it damages your brain? We will think of a way to get your sentence reduced instead."

The trio's unusual reaction immediately drew the attention of those in the public gallery, prompting murmurs to spread among the crowd.

"What's with the strange reactions from those on the prosecution's side? The intern isn't actually their scapegoat, is he? Oh my goodness, imagine being the person who does nothing but grunt work, who then has to take the fall for such a major incident."

"But the proof is right there. There's no way he can actually overturn the case. Who knows? Perhaps Aaron is just trying to buy time. You sound absolutely confident right now, but you might just end up with egg on your face."

"I won't comment until I get the full picture. I don't want to be played like an idiot again. I'll just see how this plays out for now."

"Order in the court!" the judge called out, his expression stern as he struck his gavel.

"According to the regulations, the defendant does have the right to request the use of the new system as evidence. However, since memory extraction inherently involves personal privacy, we do not typically authorize its use without the consent of the individual in question.

"To the defendant, are you certain you'd like to proceed with your request?"

"Yes, I am," I answered with a nod, wasting no time.

When they saw how determined I was, those on the prosecution's side became restless. It was obvious that they were panicking.

David and Wallace exchanged a glance, their eyes filled with immense worry. Quentin was the only one who remained at the stand, studying me pensively.

An image slowly came up on the screen. It was a memory from our university days."Please spare me, I beg of you," a man pleaded, screaming in pain beneath Quentin. Yet, Quentin showed no intention of letting the person go. Each punch of his landed on the bloodied face of the man on the ground. "You are a bold one, aren't you. How dare you confess your love to my girlfriend! You deserve this beating, don't you think so?" Quentin questioned, his voice carrying a subtle hint of excitement."I shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Quentin!" The person beneath him continued pleading, his voice growing softer as time passed. However, Quentin appeared as if he was still unsatisfied with the thrill of the moment. He got to his feet and began kicking the man in his chest. He didn't even notice me until I was right behind him. Even though he warned me not to say a single word about this incident, to his shock, word of this incident had gone viral on the campus network the ve

"Goodness me, the truth has finally come to light. My heart goes out to the intern for becoming their victim when he's just a fresh graduate.""I'm deeply disappointed. If not for the new technology that extracts memories for the trial, Aaron's life would have been ruined.""It's Leia that frustrates me the most. She's an absolute piece of trash! It's bad enough that she cheated on her partner, but to be this evil and plot against her ex-boyfriend? She's a monster.""Yeah. She was still trying to drag him down with her earlier, claiming that he was the one who cheated on her. The sheer audacity of this woman!" I remained silent as I listened to the chatter of the public gallery. Some were burning with righteous fury, while others expressed sympathy for the wrongs I had suffered.David and Wallace failed to defend themselves. They simply slumped in their seats, their faces as white as ghosts. David then covered his face and cried out sorrowfully, "I'm genuinely sorry. I'm sorry

One by one, David, Wallace, and Leia had their memories played back. The first memory was from before the accident. In a private room within a bustling club, David was joyfully smoking a cigarette, beaming smugly. On a couch nearby, Wallace and Leia were cuddled up together. They even began smooching one another as if they were the only ones in the room. "After this construction project is done, we will be able to rake in a fortune. Get the workers to push hard. It's fine if they cut corners. The most important thing is to get the job done fast. Once we pocket the cash, we run." "Got it, Mr. Harper. Still, the overpass will carry a massive amount of traffic once it is completed. What if an accident actually happens?" Wallace asked. Clearly, he was still somewhat concerned."There's nothing to be afraid of. Didn't you hire one of your juniors as the quality assurance inspector? If that happens, just push the blame on him."I've looked into him. He doesn't have much of a backin

After watching this part of my memories, the public gallery exploded into a frenzy. They were immediately reminded of their own life experiences with illicit and unfair situations. Then, they began to furiously lash out at those seated at the prosecution's side."Oh my goodness. I can't believe this was what actually went down. They deceived all of us. As it turned out, these few people are the real culprits!""They did something so immoral and ruined so many lives, all for the sake of money. And now, they're trying to frame an innocent intern? How shameless!" "Just look at the way they acted earlier. They don't have a single ounce of remorse. Did they think money could solve all their problems? Thank God for a trial system that actually delivers justice.""So, the witness who had earlier claimed he witnessed Aaron failing to stop the construction work was actually lying, wasn't he?""That's absolutely right. I can't believe these three people actually brought in a fake witness

All of a sudden, Wallace pressed his hands to his chest. With a pained expression on his face, he cried out, "Hold on, Your Honor. I have a heart condition. I'd like to request a short recess."Everyone was clearly aware of his intent to buy time. Even so, on humanitarian grounds, the judge agreed to a short recess.Behind the court, David shoved a thick envelope of cash into the judge's hands. With an extremely sincere look on his face, he said, "Help us out, Your Honor. Just say that something went wrong with the memory extraction process, resulting in fake memories being played earlier. Please, I beg of you."Aaron is broke. He has nothing, but I'm different. After all this is done, I can give you half of my company's shares right away."I know you are a smart man, Your Honor. I believe you'll know what to do after this."The judge did not say a single word. He simply gave them an enigmatic look and set the black bag aside.Meanwhile, a hidden surveillance camera above them ha

The judge brought out the second piece of evidence—a document I signed. That document was a "Work Suspension Order" issued by Wallace. When he learned about a potential collapse at the construction site, he had arranged for me to hand this critical work suspension order to the construction crew. However, because I had failed to deliver the message, this tragedy happened."I can't believe that is a signed document. This is an absolutely convincing piece of evidence.""Oh my. It was his inaction that caused the tragic death of my husband. I hate him!" "The document is in black and white, and everything has been clearly written. He saw it, yet he did not convey the message in time. Aaron can never clear his name now.""Hold up, everyone. Calm your horses. Could it be that this document only came into existence after the fact?"Much to my surprise, the most dramatic reaction to this latest remark came from my now ex-girlfriend, Leia. All color drained from her face instantly, and
