Chapter 3

Author: Jersey Wind
I frowned. "Then I still need to take my brother home first..."

"Don't worry, Ms. Dawson," Caleb cut me off. With a wave of his hand, two burly bodyguards stepped forward and grabbed Nico, one on each side.

"Your brother is so badly injured. How could he possibly handle a long trip?

"Mr. Whitaker has been kind enough to arrange for him to stay at a top private hospital outside the city, where he'll be under close supervision. He'll have the best medical team available, and we'll make sure your brother is very well taken care of."

I looked at the stone-faced bodyguards surrounding us, then at Nico, who was weak from his injuries and understood immediately.

Adrian had never intended to let me leave.

Nico struggled and glared at Caleb. "Let her go! If you want something, come after me!"

I put my hand over Nico's and shook my head. People like us knew better than to pick a fight we couldn't win.

I turned to Caleb, my face breaking into an overwhelmingly grateful smile. "I'm incredibly grateful for Mr. Whitaker's generosity. In that case, I'll have to trouble you to take good care of my brother for me, Mr. Foster."

Caleb nodded in satisfaction. "You're a smart woman, Ms. Dawson. This way, please."

That night, I was placed in a luxurious guest room at the hillside estate.

The staff brought me custom designer clothes, and the table was covered with a dinner prepared by a Michelin-starred chef.

But I didn't touch a single bite.

Late that night, when everything was quiet, the door opened. Adrian walked in wearing silk pajamas, one hand tucked into his pocket.

When he saw me sitting at the table, he assumed I'd been waiting for him. A trace of smug satisfaction flashed in his eyes.

"What? Don't like the food? I've already taken care of your brother. A specialist examined him. He's not going to die."

I lowered my head obediently. "Thank you, Mr. Whitaker."

Adrian seemed pleased by my submissive attitude. He reached out, lifted my chin, and forced me to look him in the eyes. "Maybel, I know you feel wronged. Charis has been by my side for many years. I can't let her down. But I remember everything you've done for me.

"From now on, stay here at the estate and be my housekeeper. I'll give you the best life money can buy, except for the title of my wife."

"Yes, Mr. Whitaker." I lowered my eyes, hiding the mockery in them. "I'll know my place and make sure I never cause you any trouble."

Satisfied, Adrian released me and turned to leave. "Get some rest. Don't come out until after Charis and I have had our engagement ceremony. It'll save us from any unnecessary trouble."

I was kept inside the hillside estate for three whole days.

During those three days, I tried climbing over the wall, bribing the security guards, and pretending to be sick.

Nothing worked.

Just as I was getting desperate enough to consider digging a tunnel, Charis strutted in with her personal assistant, Jenna Hollowell.

Charis was wearing a bespoke designer gown, and the enormous diamond ring on her finger gleamed as she moved. She had obviously come to gloat.

Her gaze immediately landed on the canvas bag I'd left on the table, and her eyes instantly filled with resentment.

"Maybel, so you really are playing hard to get." Charis gave a cold laugh. "You think packing your things and putting on this pitiful act like you're ready to leave at any moment will make Adrian feel sorry for you and give you the title of Mrs. Whitaker?"

I rolled my eyes, exhausted. "Ms. Lambert, you're seriously overthinking this. I packed my bag because I genuinely want to leave.

"Could you please do me a favor and tell Mr. Whitaker to let me go? Your position as Mrs. Whitaker is completely secure. I absolutely won't fight you for it."

But Charis took my words as mockery. She walked up to me, lowered her voice, and said through gritted teeth, "Stop pretending you're above all this! You think you can use the fact that you saved him to get a letter of non-prosecution and then have nothing left to worry about?

"I'm telling you, Adrian only loves me! Even if you took a hundred bottles to the head for him, you'd still be nothing but a lowly country bumpkin!"

I nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, yes, you're the important one. So can you let me leave?"

My dismissive response seemed to infuriate her completely. Charis stared at me. Then, without warning, she picked up the cup of tea I'd just poured and took a sip.

The next second, her expression changed drastically. The cup fell from her hand and hit the floor with a crash. Her entire body toppled backward, her breathing turning rapid as red welts quickly spread across her skin.

"Ah!" She clutched her throat in agony and collapsed to the floor.

"Ms. Lambert! Ms. Lambert, what's wrong?" Jenna immediately screamed, her voice shattering the silence of the estate. "Someone help! Maybel poisoned Ms. Lambert!"

  • Tricked Him to Free My Husband   Chapter 10

Later, I heard bits and pieces about what had happened back in Ashbourne from tourists passing through town.Apparently, after Adrian returned from the coast, he became seriously ill.Once he recovered, his personality changed completely. He became a cold, ruthless workaholic, and no woman was ever seen by his side again. As for Charis, she completely lost her mind while confined to the psychiatric hospital. Every day, she screamed curses at the air, calling out my name. The executive who had framed Nico was eventually investigated after Adrian went to the police, and he ended up in prison.Nico's name was finally cleared for good. But he turned down recruiting offers from other major companies, perfectly content to run our little restaurant by the sea.The wind had died down, and the sky was streaked with the colors of sunset.Nico pulled the restaurant's rolling door halfway down and flipped the sign to "Closed".Then he came over to the register, picked up the ledger I'd jus

The restaurant instantly descended into chaos. Tables and chairs went flying as screams rang out one after another.Nico fought like a tiger protecting what was his, wielding the wrench so fiercely that no one could get near him. Those elite bodyguards who normally threw their weight around at the Whitaker Group were practically made of paper in front of him. Anyone he hit went down, and anyone he so much as clipped was injured.Within minutes, more than a dozen bodyguards were sprawled across the floor, groaning in pain.Nico wasn't even out of breath. He tossed the wrench onto a table and looked coldly at Adrian.Adrian's expression had gone beyond ugly. He stared at his men writhing on the floor, his entire body shaking with rage, then suddenly turned and roared toward the door."Legal! Get the legal team down here! I want this restaurant bankrupt by the end of the day, and I want both of you behind bars for the rest of your lives!"Outside, several black sedans immediately s

I sighed. "Mr. Whitaker, it seems you still don't understand me very well."My husband, Nico Reynolds, was framed by an executive at your company for embezzlement six months ago. He was thrown in jail and was facing a heavy sentence."I'm just a woman with no money or connections. Trying to overturn his case in Ashbourne was nearly impossible. Then, just when I'd run out of options, I happened to rescue you during the hurricane after you'd lost your memory."I paused, watching Adrian's expression gradually stiffen, then continued, "So I worked three jobs and pretended to take care of you without a single complaint."I've lived in this town for years. I'm good at reading people and situations. That thug's bottle wasn't actually going to hit you. But if I threw myself in front of you and took the hit instead, then in your mind, I'd become the woman who saved your life."Adrian looked as though he'd been struck by lightning. He stumbled half a step backward.Looking at his deathly p

Seeing Adrian's face turn deathly pale, I decided to make myself absolutely clear."I did all of that for one reason: to get that letter. If you'd died, who was I supposed to get it from?"I never once thought about competing with Charis for the title of Mrs. Whitaker. If anything, I couldn't wait for the two of you to hurry up and get married so you'd stop getting in the way of me saving Nico."Adrian swayed sharply. He stared at me, his voice trembling with a hint of humility and pleading that even he didn't seem to realize was there."Maybel... you're lying. We depended on each other for months. Are you telling me there wasn't even one moment when you had feelings for me?""No," I answered without the slightest hesitation.I looked at him and said seriously, "Mr. Whitaker, you've always been above everyone else. You're used to having people revolve around you, and you're used to measuring everything in terms of power and personal gain."You think becoming Mrs. Whitaker is som

  • Tricked Him to Free My Husband   Chapter 6

Maybel's POVThe sea breeze carried a faint trace of salt through Seabrook, and the sun had baked the stone-paved streets hot.I had opened a seafood restaurant on the busiest corner in town. With the savings we'd built up over years of working, we'd taken over a two-story storefront with a large yard, and life couldn't have been better.Nico's injuries had mostly healed. He'd worked in security before, so he was strong. These days, when he wasn't helping me haul seafood or fix things around the restaurant, he was constantly finding new ways to make me something delicious."Honey, take a break. Try the vanilla custard I just made."Nico came out of the kitchen carrying a white ceramic bowl. He was dressed simply in a white T-shirt today, tall and broad-shouldered. There was still a faint scar at the corner of his mouth, but if anything, it only made him look more rugged.I was sitting behind the register punching numbers into a calculator. The moment I heard him, I leaned toward

Third-Person POV"Where is she?! Where is Maybel?!" Adrian roared, completely losing control as he kicked over a nearby shelf. The bodyguards lowered their heads in fear, and the entire estate was immediately searched from top to bottom.Nothing.She was nowhere to be found.Adrian's eyes were bloodshot. Suddenly, something occurred to him, and he grabbed Caleb by the collar. "Find out who that relative she got out with the letter really is!"Less than an hour later, Caleb returned drenched in sweat, the back of his shirt soaked through. "M-Mr. Whitaker, we found out. The person Ms. Dawson got out wasn't her brother..."It was Nico Reynolds, the department manager at one of the Group's subsidiaries who was arrested over financial irregularities."Caleb swallowed hard before trembling out the words that sent Adrian plunging into an icy abyss, "And Nico Reynolds and Ms. Dawson aren't brother and sister..."Adrian abruptly shoved Caleb aside and snatched up the employee file on t
