Chapter 4

Author: Jersey Wind
I stood there, staring at Charis as she convulsed on the floor at my feet, completely stunned.

It wasn't long before the guest room door burst open. Adrian rushed in with the family doctor and several security guards.

He shoved me aside and scooped Charis off the floor, his voice trembling. "Charis! Charis, what's wrong?"

Charis leaned weakly against him and pointed at me, barely managing to speak. "Adrian... Maybel said... if I died, she'd get to be Mrs. Whitaker. I feel awful..."

With that, her head lolled to the side, and she passed out. The doctor hurried forward and gave her an antihistamine injection.

Adrian whipped around, his eyes bloodshot as he glared at me. The look on his face made it seem like he wanted to tear me apart.

"Maybel!" he roared through gritted teeth. "Because you saved my life, I've given you chance after chance. I even let you stay at my estate and enjoy a life of luxury! And you're vicious enough to poison Charis?"

He strode toward me and struck me hard across the face.

Smack!

The force snapped my head to the side, and I tasted blood at the corner of my mouth.

"You've disappointed me beyond belief!" Adrian shouted, his face filled with hurt and fury.

I covered my numb cheek and watched him rage while my mind raced.

Trying to kill his fiancee was a serious offence. If he called the police, I'd be looking at months behind bars at the very least.

But Adrian wouldn't call them. He'd want to keep the scandal quiet.

Sure enough, Adrian's body went rigid.

"You think I wouldn't dare kill you?! You think saving my life gives you the right to do whatever you want!" He spoke through clenched teeth, but in the end, he still didn't do anything more severe.

"Guards! Maybel is dangerous. Lock her in the basement! No one is allowed to see her without my permission!"

The security guards grabbed me.

I couldn't fight them off, and they dragged me out of the guest room.

The basement was cold and damp, and the air smelled of mildew and dust. After shoving me inside, the guards locked the metal door and left.

In the middle of the night, I reached into my pocket with practiced ease.

Adrian must have been so furious that he'd forgotten one thing. The position he'd given me was "personal housekeeper."

On my first day on the job, the estate manager had handed me a ring of spare keys to every room in the house so I could clean them.

Talk about a stroke of luck!

I pulled out the keys and quietly unlocked the basement door.

Avoiding the security cameras, I climbed over the back wall of the estate and struggled my way out of the wealthy neighborhood.

The moment I breathed in the free air outside, I almost threw my head back and laughed.

Screw Adrian and his controlling billionaire act. Screw that scheming Charis, too. I was done playing their stupid games!

I rushed to the private hospital outside Ashbourne that same night.

Nico hadn't slept. He was sitting beside the hospital bed, staring out the window.

At the knock on the door, he immediately got to his feet, alert. It wasn't until he heard my voice that he yanked the door open.

The moment he saw me covered in dust with my hair a mess, his eyes turned red. He pulled me tightly into his arms, shielding me against his chest.

"Honey... you've been through hell." His voice trembled as he held me close.

That night, we hired a private car and headed straight for Seabrook. We were finally free to go wherever we wanted.

Meanwhile, dawn was just beginning to break over the hillside estate.

With dark circles under his eyes, Adrian had spent the entire night sitting in his study. Charis's allergic reaction had subsided long ago, and he'd already finished dealing with the endless company emails.

He looked at the agreement lying on his desk, already drawn up to keep Maybel as his generously compensated mistress, and a confident smile curved his lips.

Adrian toyed with the custom pen in his hand and leisurely asked Caleb, who stood beside him, "How are things in the basement? Has Maybel realized what she did wrong? Did she spend the whole night crying and demanding to see me?"

Caleb bent slightly at the waist, desperately trying to figure out how to answer.

Adrian waved him off with a quiet scoff, smug satisfaction flashing in his eyes. "Forget it. A little suffering will do her good. Maybe next time she won't use the fact that she saved my life as an excuse to get jealous and cause trouble for Charis."

He stood, picked up the agreement, and headed for the basement with Caleb, full of anticipation.

"Maybel, I know you only lost your head for a moment..."

But when the bodyguard pushed open the heavy metal door, the smile froze on Adrian's face.

Nothing answered him but silence. The room was empty.

Adrian's heart plummeted. For the first time in his life, a wave of panic seized his heart.

Later, I heard bits and pieces about what had happened back in Ashbourne from tourists passing through town.Apparently, after Adrian returned from the coast, he became seriously ill.Once he recovered, his personality changed completely. He became a cold, ruthless workaholic, and no woman was ever seen by his side again. As for Charis, she completely lost her mind while confined to the psychiatric hospital. Every day, she screamed curses at the air, calling out my name. The executive who had framed Nico was eventually investigated after Adrian went to the police, and he ended up in prison.Nico's name was finally cleared for good. But he turned down recruiting offers from other major companies, perfectly content to run our little restaurant by the sea.The wind had died down, and the sky was streaked with the colors of sunset.Nico pulled the restaurant's rolling door halfway down and flipped the sign to "Closed".Then he came over to the register, picked up the ledger I'd jus

The restaurant instantly descended into chaos. Tables and chairs went flying as screams rang out one after another.Nico fought like a tiger protecting what was his, wielding the wrench so fiercely that no one could get near him. Those elite bodyguards who normally threw their weight around at the Whitaker Group were practically made of paper in front of him. Anyone he hit went down, and anyone he so much as clipped was injured.Within minutes, more than a dozen bodyguards were sprawled across the floor, groaning in pain.Nico wasn't even out of breath. He tossed the wrench onto a table and looked coldly at Adrian.Adrian's expression had gone beyond ugly. He stared at his men writhing on the floor, his entire body shaking with rage, then suddenly turned and roared toward the door."Legal! Get the legal team down here! I want this restaurant bankrupt by the end of the day, and I want both of you behind bars for the rest of your lives!"Outside, several black sedans immediately s

I sighed. "Mr. Whitaker, it seems you still don't understand me very well."My husband, Nico Reynolds, was framed by an executive at your company for embezzlement six months ago. He was thrown in jail and was facing a heavy sentence."I'm just a woman with no money or connections. Trying to overturn his case in Ashbourne was nearly impossible. Then, just when I'd run out of options, I happened to rescue you during the hurricane after you'd lost your memory."I paused, watching Adrian's expression gradually stiffen, then continued, "So I worked three jobs and pretended to take care of you without a single complaint."I've lived in this town for years. I'm good at reading people and situations. That thug's bottle wasn't actually going to hit you. But if I threw myself in front of you and took the hit instead, then in your mind, I'd become the woman who saved your life."Adrian looked as though he'd been struck by lightning. He stumbled half a step backward.Looking at his deathly p

Seeing Adrian's face turn deathly pale, I decided to make myself absolutely clear."I did all of that for one reason: to get that letter. If you'd died, who was I supposed to get it from?"I never once thought about competing with Charis for the title of Mrs. Whitaker. If anything, I couldn't wait for the two of you to hurry up and get married so you'd stop getting in the way of me saving Nico."Adrian swayed sharply. He stared at me, his voice trembling with a hint of humility and pleading that even he didn't seem to realize was there."Maybel... you're lying. We depended on each other for months. Are you telling me there wasn't even one moment when you had feelings for me?""No," I answered without the slightest hesitation.I looked at him and said seriously, "Mr. Whitaker, you've always been above everyone else. You're used to having people revolve around you, and you're used to measuring everything in terms of power and personal gain."You think becoming Mrs. Whitaker is som

Maybel's POVThe sea breeze carried a faint trace of salt through Seabrook, and the sun had baked the stone-paved streets hot.I had opened a seafood restaurant on the busiest corner in town. With the savings we'd built up over years of working, we'd taken over a two-story storefront with a large yard, and life couldn't have been better.Nico's injuries had mostly healed. He'd worked in security before, so he was strong. These days, when he wasn't helping me haul seafood or fix things around the restaurant, he was constantly finding new ways to make me something delicious."Honey, take a break. Try the vanilla custard I just made."Nico came out of the kitchen carrying a white ceramic bowl. He was dressed simply in a white T-shirt today, tall and broad-shouldered. There was still a faint scar at the corner of his mouth, but if anything, it only made him look more rugged.I was sitting behind the register punching numbers into a calculator. The moment I heard him, I leaned toward

Third-Person POV"Where is she?! Where is Maybel?!" Adrian roared, completely losing control as he kicked over a nearby shelf. The bodyguards lowered their heads in fear, and the entire estate was immediately searched from top to bottom.Nothing.She was nowhere to be found.Adrian's eyes were bloodshot. Suddenly, something occurred to him, and he grabbed Caleb by the collar. "Find out who that relative she got out with the letter really is!"Less than an hour later, Caleb returned drenched in sweat, the back of his shirt soaked through. "M-Mr. Whitaker, we found out. The person Ms. Dawson got out wasn't her brother..."It was Nico Reynolds, the department manager at one of the Group's subsidiaries who was arrested over financial irregularities."Caleb swallowed hard before trembling out the words that sent Adrian plunging into an icy abyss, "And Nico Reynolds and Ms. Dawson aren't brother and sister..."Adrian abruptly shoved Caleb aside and snatched up the employee file on t
